@ sean kirby: ""fake"" British bike ? ... so ... according to your way of thinking, BMW is fake German as they have factory in Poland (among other countries), RENAULT fake French as they have factory in Turkey, TOYOTA fake Japanese as they have factory in Thailand, Malaysia a.o., ... I guess even ... Apple products like iPhone, are fake American as the factory is in China ... and ... and ... the list of famous brands trying to keep a lower production cost this way, is ENDLESS !!!

It would be easy to agree with you, but I can't. The reason I cannot agree with you is that it is clear from your video that Triumph's main manufacturing facility is now no longer in the UK but this one in Thailand. Now if BMW, Renault, and Toyota shifted all of their main manufacturing away from their country of origin to another country then you might have a point. There's another issue here though, Triumph is manufacturing most, if not all, of their heritage models at this facility with what I think are excessive appeals to their old Brit Bike origins, ergo union jack touches that didn't even exist on the original British made ones! SO whilst they may not be "fake" British Bikes to you, they do look like "faux" British Bikes to me. The truth is that Apple and all of the other companies you mention would never have got off the ground if it hadn't of been for the engineering and manufacturing talent of the country that enabled them to grow. Global expansion is both impressive and noble but when it morphs purely into arbitrage then the benefits are, in my mind, dubious.

It’s fake British because Triumph’s majority model range, the Bonneville trades on its British heritage. Same as Moto Guzzi trades on being Italian. But at the end if the day, if it doesn’t matter to the customers who are buying more Triumphs than ever then we must commend Triumph for its move to Thailand.

I must admit I thought my new Thruxton was made in England. Still...my understanding is that is was designed in England by British engineers, so where it is made is less of a consideration and I agree with the other posts about globalisation being a fact of life to keep costs down. Had this factory been in the Uk my bike would have probably cost twice as much and been unaffordable. Also had Triumph not been able to reduce costs and earn a healthy profit, we would not be enjoying the suberb variety of bikes they now make. Watching this video shows what a clean, high-tech factory looks like... and I suspect the staff there are very happy and proud to work for Triumph. Certainly not some 'sweat-shop'. Seeing the hand-painted coach-lines was impressive to watch. As hard as I may look, the quality, fit and finish on my now apparently Thailand assembled Thruxton R is flawless.

I purchased 9 of the new Triumphs since 1995 six from England and three from Thailand and in my opinion the quality has been getting better each year. The latest Triumphs from Thailand build quality is on par with big four from Japan in my opinion although Consumer Reports still have the big four on terms of reliability.

Personally I’m glad mine was not built in England. I’ve owned too many bikes that were assembled in England and they were nothing to brag about quality wise. The certainly looked good and sounded terrific in the ‘60’s and 70’s. I really like my 1970 Triumph Tiger 650 but me 2020 Bonnie is a vast improvement.

Triumph has been making good marketing decisions over the last few years by building and selling their motorcycles in Asia where the populations and thus the sales of bikes are staggeringly higher when compared to the US and England. And…It has definitely not had a negative impact on quality. I understand the allegiance to an English bike being made in. Nostalgia is a powerful thing.

That's globalisation for you. Cheap labour, high sales equals maximum profits. Once they find an even cheaper labour source, they will exploit it's potential, just like every other major manufacturer on the planet. I'm sure the only reason they assemble the bikes in the UK is to minimise import duties!

Triumph cynically sells the "British Bike Heritage", then makes the bikes in Asia. Pocket the outsized profits, and undermine British workers at the same time. All of the companies that are engaged in this practice, and there are many, are engaged in economic treason. I wouldn't pay them 2 cents for one of their bikes, just on the principle alone.

Clean modern factory producing a great product, but I'd like to know how much the workers are paid, what union rights they have and in what conditions they live in before I buy my next motorcycle. I'm in the UK btw and work in a plastics factory that produces parts for Triumph Thailand among many others, I know how cheaply I'm paid, minimum wage, and it's clear to me that Triumph could have opened these factories in other parts of the UK and still make good profit. There's nothing special about british workers and there's nothing special about foreign workers, it's simply all about money, that's globalisation for you, raping the world for profit and destroying the planet while they're at it. Henry Ford was a nazi, but he started modern consumerism with one mantra, the workers need to be able to afford to buy what they're making, then we can sell more, I wonder if the workers in these Thai factories are all riding Triumphs, I doubt it.
@11geko11
@11geko11 4 жыл бұрын
My wife is Thai, and half of every year I live in Thailand, so I know a few things about life here. Workers in Asia are not paid the same as the ones in Europe or USA. In most of the Asian countries (including Thailand) salaries are much lower, but of course not as low as in China for example. I guess this is the first thing that companies take into consideration before they decide where to build a factory. And I don't really see why this is a bad thing. When a worker in -let's say- Triumph factory is paid with the average worker's salary in Thailand, why he should be unhappy with it. In my country (Greece) that we have no heavy industry at all, it would be a blessing if some companies wanted to establish factories and give jobs to some thousands of people, but they don't do it, cause average salary is a lot higher than average Asian, and that's the main reason they choose Asian countries. Now back to Triumph Thailand workers, some of them (very few) are proud owners of Triumphs, but most of them are riding Japanese scooters, from brands that also have factories in Thailand, as most Thai people do (every family has 2-3-4 of these) and mainly because Triumph does not produce small motorcycles at all.

@11geko11
@11geko11 5 жыл бұрын
The customs documents will "show" you that the motorcycle is imported to your country: from "Thailand", or "UK", or ... etc etc Also about the parts ... even if the motorcycle is assembled in UK (very rare), some parts may be made in countries all over the world. For example Triumph's policy is to choose some of the best quality parts no matter where they were made in. My Bonnie has front fork suspancion from Showa (Japanese), brakes from Brembo (Italian) a.o. Its Triumph's choice to use parts with the best VFM. (Showa front fork may not have the quality of Ohlins, but still has better quality than many other brands. Not to mention that Triumph in recent Thruxton models is using all these brands - Ohlins, Brembo, Pirelli tyres and more)
