Review of the Triumph Speed Twin 2019
Awesome awesome bike! The Speed Twin joins Triumphs classics range and it is brilliant. It took me a little while to get used to the Speed Twin as I didn’t feel intune with it. I initially thought this was down to the torque and gear ratios however I think it might have been due to the dampened throttle response when in rain mode. In sport mode the Speed Twin felt brilliant.
Test ride goes through real world riding in the UK with some duel carriageway, town riding and country roads. The Speed Twin excels in all apart from a slight loss of comfort at motorway speeds due to no wind protection. This isn’t as pronounced as the Triumph Scrambler 1200XE however would be something to consider if you are planning on long motorway stretches.
Option extras I would say are a must have would be the heated grips. I would personally also look for an adjustment to the kick stand as it is a little tricky to find - I thought it had fallen off initially as I spent 30 seconds trying to find it :D
If you are interested in the Triumph Speed Twin and in the Kent area, please pop in and see the guys at Lagunas in Maidstone who have been very kind in lending me the bike for the review - www.laguna.co.uk/
Thanks for watching!

Great review, had to put a comment here as just watched the video and had a big smile on my face at you chuckling on the back of the performance of this machine. Know exactly what you went through as I borrowed one from guy in work for a 10min ride (which was more 30mins) and the pull through all the gears is fantastic. Ive been on sport bikes since 90s and can't give my ZX10R up just yet, but if I had the money for a 2019 Speed Twin I'd be down the shop with deposit today, it's that good. I'm 50 next month and dropping hints, my Mrs fed up of hearing about Speed Twin already. Great vid, which sums up the bike nicely.

You made the point about the massive torque and not knowing what gear it was in. I had the same experience riding my mate's GSXS1000f. I found it boring because every gear is the same, 1st or 5th, 3rd or 6th, 4th and 5th. They all felt the same even at very low speed. The other thing that is often mentioned is useable power and where you can safely use it. I like my SV650 because less can be more [enjoyable].
@TommyBarnezTV
@TommyBarnezTV 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah can definitely see the argument for being able to thrash a 650 more, though having ridden quite a few different bikes now the 'high torque in every gear bike' does have a good place in the market. You have buckets of power instantly available which just feels good when crusing around on a sunny day. The engine on the speed twin is sublime too, worth having a test ride. Thruxton R and bobber black also wonderful bikes to ride, same engine, just slightly different tuning I think

Nice to hear an honest (no bull) review. I think half the problem with the torque is (as you say) lack of experience and hesitation on your part. Looking at the revs you were running at, it was a bit higher than needed whilst cruising about. Don't know what else you've owned, but a 650 V-Strom is a bit underwhelming in comparison. Don't get hung up about what gear you're in, just go with the feel & engine response and select gears as necessary. All the best.

I hear Triumph are working on a fix for the on/off throttle response, just to smooth out the transition. I felt this on my test ride and assumed it's a twin thing and I'd get used to it. It's a lovely bike and great for pootling around but in my view the street/speed triples match the speed twin and give more sport. I know I'd miss my speed triple too much if I were to trade. Be a great second bike.

@@TommyBarnezTV Hi Tommy, it was in road mode but I didn't fiddle about with it. Guess you're right that rain mode would provide a smoother transition. I've read comments on other reviews of the bike (as I love the look of the twin - they've designed a really well proportioned bike) that suggests Triumph are aware and working on a fix. I'd just got off a speed triple rs and so I'd had my performance thrill but wish now I'd tried sport on the twin. I'll have to give it a try when they hit the second hand market 👍

@@S1000xrhp Don't get me wrong I'm sure my 2014 street triple r out performs the speed twin no question. But for me the speed twin provides enough performance and is enough fun to satisfy. If I was to get one it would be a second bike as I own another. I'd also be interested in fitting a decat pipe and possibly a performance cam just to remove some of the euro nonsense, some interesting vids on that on tec bike parts.

I passed my DAS as a middle aged newbie biker just over a month ago. I always had my heart set on a Triumph, and I was planning to buy the Street Twin. However on my test ride day I rode both this and the Street Twin. They both blew me away after coming off a gutless 125. On a second test ride of the Street Twin, I was starting to get used to its power. I don't think I ever got used to the power on the Speed Twin. It was breathtaking. I've never had to hang on to the handlebars before ! In fact I think my trousers may have gone brown and smelly whilst riding the Speed Twin. I have never before ridden or driven a car with so much acceleration. It was mind bending. The only thing I'd change on the Speed Twin are the black exhausts. Not so much for the sound, I just think the all stainless look is better. I want the Speed Twin now ...
@TommyBarnezTV
@TommyBarnezTV 5 жыл бұрын
You'll get used to the power reasonably quickly I'd say. Just take it easy to start off. The bike will only go as fast as you want it to. Also worthwhile doing advanced training like the Institute of advanced motorists. I'm going through it at the moment and it definitely improves things

@@TommyBarnezTV I've had one of these now for just over a month. It is frighteningly quick. I would recommend rain mode for anyone coming off a 125. Sport mode just makes the throttle a lot more sensitive. It is a lot of fun. The other day, at it's first service, I got a test ride of a Street Triple RS. I guess I'm biased, I still do prefer my Speed Twin (classic looks mainly). I've got used to the way the Speed Twin pulls at lower engine revs, which is different to the Street Triple, where as you observed it's power kicks in at 7000rpm plus. If and when I can afford one I'd like a Street Triple too, since it is quite different to the Speed Twin. They complement one another well. I wouldn't want another retro twin. That would be too much the same. I realise the Street Triple RS is probably a bit faster if ridden my a skilled rider. They've both got more power than I currently know what to do with, and both easily get to silly speeds. I guess I can see, as you observed, if you've come off an engine that delivers it's power in a higher rev band, it is a bit weird to have it delivered at much lower revs. You do get used to it, it is quite addictive !

@@karlosh9286 awesome! I recognised your name in the comments on the CBR650R but couldn't remember what you had said last time. Nice one going for the speed twin! It was my favourite bike for a long time over ones I had tested, including the street triple rs. Great riding position, epic torque, a lovely bike to take out on sunny days in the countryside! Triumph really have nailed the classic bike range I think. Speed twin, truxton r and bobber black are all seriously wonderfully bikes. The bobber black won for me, but solid arguments for all. Well done on first month and first service milestone. Remember to check out the institute of advanced motorists, it's a huge help and really does put you in a good position moving forward.

Great review Tommy, thanks and subscribed. I can't believe how easy it is to filter in the UK, compared to here in Australia. It's perfectly legal here in most states as far as I know but that doesn't stop any random tin can from taking offence to a rider safely filtering. To see the bus and the old Merc at 12.40 both give you space was interesting. Here in Queensland traffic could be at a crawl on the M1 in 45 plus degrees (110+F) and those air conditioned tin cans will close a gap just to have a rider suffer in the heat in their protective gear (why?). Funny thing though, if it's raining the tin cans will give way, make room and generally be better humans. This is my experience anyway. Would be good to see what's under the seat, any room for wet gear, wallet etc? If they make an R version with maybe the Scrambler XE's clocks and the Thruxton's pretty gold springs I'll trade an arm in tomorrow. Maybe a comparo between this an the R9T?
@TommyBarnezTV
@TommyBarnezTV 5 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, yeah filtering is pretty good here. I also find cars are very used to bikes filtering and will move out of the way once they see you're there. I'm pretty sure the merc didnt realise he was closing a gap at the time and once he heard the bike he moved over, same as the bus. I left that part in as shows how cars respond to the exhaust note. I'd say in general it's only maybe 1% of car drivers here that are the annoying gap closer types. Once cars see you they're generally pretty good. Sorry no idea about space under seat as didnt look. I dont have a relationship with BMW for borrowing bikes for reviews at the moment but if that changes I'll check out the r9t. Guessing it'll be a while though as have quite a lot of others already lined up. Thanks for comment and safe riding!

Man I'll tell you, been riding for 25 years and I'll never get used to bikes slithering thru traffic. People don't pay attention when changing lanes. I'd be into someone s side mirror the first time I tried it. I'm assuming it's common there. Here ud be a hood ornament in no time. Just bought my first Triumph. 2005 Bonnie. Coming from a Yamaha VMAX. . Nice video.
@TommyBarnezTV
@TommyBarnezTV 3 жыл бұрын
Nice, love the Bonnie's. Yeah filtering is very common in this part of the world. Someone can change lanes suddenly but you develop of bit of a 6th sense for it with the way traffic is moving, noticing wheels turning or head turns. You get used to it and it really does feel a lot safer than not. Risk of someone going into the back of you is pretty high in stop start traffic. Also when you filter you get ahead of the traffic so spend less time amongst cars
@peterford9369
@peterford9369 3 жыл бұрын
@@TommyBarnezTV Yes sir, I can see it's common there and elsewhere. Here to. And yes, the concern about someone behind u not seeing u, does make u keep an eye in the mirror, when stopped. Maybe it's an overwhelming consideration for people who were in line ahead of me. Never an interaction in 25 years. Cept the occasional bee or love bugs. Anyway, is that why the zigzag lines,at intersections? Does that tell driver's that bikes are allowed to parse the traffic. I'm not sure if it's legal here truthfully. Do like your rides, seeing the bikes. Keep safe.

I just did a back to back test ride on a 2018 Kawasaki Z900RS and right after on a 2019 Triumph Speed Twin. For me, it was a night and day clear difference of a better riding feel on the Speed Twin. Throttle response and a more slick clutch/gear feeling/engagement. It may be because of what I'm riding currently, a 2018 Harley Iron 1200, which is pretty smooth to operate. I do and did like the looks of the Z900RS with the Orange/Brown color theme a little better and I like the little details of having little hook points for bungie cords on the back end as well as a helmet holder. You do sit more upright on the Z900RS so that may win people over too for comfort/cruising more. But, overall, in combination of the looks of the Speed Twin, the fit and finish of it all, and for me personally, the drive train smoothness of clutch / gear engagement and throttle input, makes it a better fit. The deep sound from the stock exhaust and outstanding power of the brakes, and the low end torque at a low 4900 rpm which is linear throughout the rev range, just icing on the cake.To each their own, but the Speed Twin won me over with the brief stints of test riding both back to back. Aaand I bought a Speed Twin today. Outstanding stuff.

I’m on the market for a bike and I love everything about the speed twin : looks , sound and performances.. but I’m conflicted because triumph is well known for making bikes with transmission issues .. online there are horror stories about bikes failing and Triumph customer service being completely unhelpful.. what’s your experience? I mean the bike is not cheap ..
@TommyBarnezTV

Others might be able to help with long term owner experience which I dont have have. However personally I've ridden quite a few triumph bikes now and granted they are all new demo bikes, but out of all the manufacturers the triumphs feel the most quality and well put together. Only problems I've really heard about first hand have been with the original explorer 1200. Overheating issues with a friends bike, however he now has 130,000 miles on the clock.

I already have a T120 and a Thruxton R. This bike seems to be a cross between both so for me its neither here or there and some customers might think the same. I have lost track of the number of Triumph bonneville derived models in production now. It looks great but its not as pretty as a T120 and not as sporty looking as a Thruxton.
@TommyBarnezTV
@TommyBarnezTV 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you've got a T120 and a Thruxton R would be no point. I loved it though, havent tried a thruxton R yet but I think my debate would be between the two. Would just be the one though. I'm glad they've made it, loved the ride. I personally prefer the look of the thruxton R though
@Grassroots_Hegemon
@Grassroots_Hegemon 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's nice that they put the clout and capability of the thruxton in a bike that looks a little less sporty, it makes the bike look older and more vintage, which for my eyes is a feature not a bug. Both wonderful bikes though.

The more you ride Triumphs the more you'll realise that you don't need to rev them. The triples will pull from tickover. The twins will be a bit more lumpy below 1700rpm. So stick 'em in 6th and leave it there.

@TommyBarnezTV
@TommyBarnezTV 5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same before I rode it. Unsure why they didn't go with spokes however it's my understanding there is quite a bit if weight saving on the wheels compared to the thruxton so that may be why? If there was extra weight on wheels that effected handling I'd say leave them as is as it's the way the bike feels that makes it awesome I think. Looks wise I prefer the thruxton. Just grabbing a coffee at ace cafe London and there was a very good looking thruxton r out front

Thanks for the review, I don't feel this is a good bike for the UK, no protection from the rain & your roads are a joke, too many cars & potholes. Shame about the conventional forks, gaiters, no heated grips or cruise control it would be nice to have a quick shift, no real adjustable suspension & that brake pot looks out of place. It's the engine that will sell the bike. Overpriced for what you get. Triumph might bring an R version with all the extras.
