Review of the Triumph Tiger 1200 XRT 2019 which was very kindly lent to me by the guys at Laguna Motorcycles in Maidstone www.laguna.co.uk/
Having taken the 800 out recently I was keen to have a go on the Tiger 1200 XRT to see how it compares. Wow the Triumph Tiger 1200 XRT is a very solid bike that would well on big tours and journeys.
Seating position on the Triumph Tiger 1200 is upright and relaxed. A commanding position that affords good vision of the road and traffic around you. The seating position coupled with comforts such as heated seat, grips and cruise control make the tiger 1200 XRT a bike that you could ride for a long time without becoming fatigued.
The weight of the bike was a concern for me before getting on it however the weight of the 1200 XRT is a lot more manageable than I though it would be. Once moving you don’t notice it, even slow speed manoeuvres feel very stable.
I enjoyed the Tiger 1200 a lot and even though it wouldn’t work as a daily for my personal riding I can see this bike working for a lot of others. For me it would more fit the gap as a big tourer.
List price of the Triumph Tiger 1200 XRT is £16,300 with the XR Version starting at £12,200.

I have had mine now for 4 months, fantastic machine can’t get enough of it, I have also had the GS1200 another good bike but for looks and being responsive to the throttle the triumph is superb,gets you out of trouble effortlessly, the only draw back is the weight, I have been through most of the triumph range and this is by far the best

I’ve owned my Tiger 1200 for 7 years now and in nearly 40 years of riding, it’s the best bike I’ve ever owned; comfortable, smooth, charismatic, spacious, reliable and with a riding position that reminds me of driving my Land Rover 👍 The only thing that would stop me from buying another is that Nick Bloor has done the unthinkable and arranged to ship nearly all remaining U.K. production, including the T12, out to Thailand and make large scale redundancies at Hinckley 🤬 Shame on him.

Funnily enough, I’ve just gone and bought a 2015 Triumph Trophy to run alongside the Tiger, but they were only ever built in Hinckley before going out of production in 2018. I’ll carry on using their bikes, but it’s now confined to used only.

Brought my Triumph Sprint ST 1050 over with me which is getting a bit old now so looking at new options. Nice! Havent managed to do a scotland trip yet, was planning this year but work got in the way. Tiger 900 out next year which I think could be another option to look at. The 1200 is great but I personally preferred the 800, just a little easier to move around and filter on. Bet you dont miss the traffic from maidstone to Croydon haha. I'm daily into central london which is filtering most of the way 😂

Hello! I'm from Portugal and i have the same bike you tested! In korosi red... Just have it for One month and around 1000 kilometers... I have to say the bike is marvelous!!! I could have a GS but i decided the Triumph Tiger is so much more exclusive and stylish. On motorways is simply confortable and quite safe (can't feel the wind at all) it has quite a lot of power i just came of a Tracer 900 from 2018 and i felt in love for this Tiger and it was the best thing i did... What a bike!!! It's a bit heavy in the begining but i think its just a question of getting use to it... Now i feel much more confident 👍 and Im just a short driver, 1,73 centimeters ( around 5'8)... I would advise any new owner to BE very carefull in the first days... On the twisties is quite good and secure! I really can't say anything against it! "She" is a beauty 💓 in Portugal the weather is warm but the bikes heat is perfectly normal... I usually avoid filtering but its also behaves good... Coming from a Yamaha Tracer 900 i would say that the major difference is the fact that it's 242 kilograms makes you be extra carefull when stoping or moving the bike at slow speed or even inside your garage... But once you get used to it all the rest is simply Wonderfull!

Hey Bert - I'm thinking of getting one of these for every day commuting plus weekend fun and longer trips. I've currently got a Yamaha XJ6-S, which is nice and slim for getting through tight traffic. How have you found this bike day-to-day? The handlebars are reported as 930mm wide, whereas my Diversion is 770mm (I think!), so that's 160mm wider... have you struggled to get through traffic?

Nice review, gave me some great information on whether to look further into buying this cool bike. I asked this question below but sometime people don't see them... So what was the heat output really like? I have a Aprilia that puts out quite a bit of heat. Enough that it gets uncomfortable at times going slow. I live in the PNW (Washington state) so weather tends to be cool throughout the year. But we can't filter yet on the motorways. Any info would be great!

Had a chat with my mate today who has one of the original explorers hes put 104,000 miles on. The original explorer did have heat problems resulting in quite a big repair under warranty at 40k mileage for him. He has since fitted a switch so he can manually turn the fan on which he does in traffic. He hasnt had problems since and bike is going strong at high mileage. With the updated explorer now being the tiger 1200 it is my understanding that triumph made a large number of upgrades to the engine which may have solved the problem though I havent heard from anyone with high mileage that can confirm. Might be worthwhile getting in touch with triumph direct and finding out what the score is. Ps no filtering sucks!

I can tell you. The bike gets hot on a hot day. In my job as an instructor, sometimes I have to follow mopeds at max speed 28mph around town with many junctions and no filtering. If it's above 25°C I really feel the heat in between my legs. And I'm fully clothed in protective gear. It's not a deal breaker for me. Done 40,000 miles on it. Exactly the same as in the video.

I’ve had mine nearly a year now. I love the comfort, quickshifter especially down as you approach traffic. The adjustable screen is a gimmick IMO I stick it at the highest and leave it. The height / weight is too much for me to aggressively filter, so I can’t take full advantage in cities. I don’t see the bike as fun , it’s a tool that speeds up long trips, I approach lights slowly because the weight requires planning, what gear do I want, road positioning, what are the cars around me doing, which way am I turning from stand still, what my exit from the junction like etc etc. Whereas on my street triple I pull up in any gear, look around and just go, it’s much easier and more fun in traffic.

I really like the review. I am wondering if there are any really twisty roads near you as that main section of road was very open and had good visability but didn't require much rapid change of direction. Did you have many corners that required rapid direction change and if so how did the bike do?
@TommyBarnezTV
@TommyBarnezTV 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate. My usual test route has more twisties on it however wanted to test this more on motorway/dual carriageway cruising. In hindsight I should have done a twistie section too. The bike turns well and its pretty flickable - I've got a mate who's done about 90k miles on one and he throws it around. It does feel big though and I think to get to a point where you're chucking it around takes a bit of getting used to it. So unfortunately cant give you first hand experience of chucking it through the corners but would say it's definitely possible, just might take a few hours longer getting to used to it over smaller bikes. I didnt check the fuel ecconomy but I would estimate the 800 to be around 60mpg. 1200 probably around the early 50s - I'm just guessing here. For me the 800 xrt made more sense as a daily. It's a wonderful bike. The engine wasnt as exciting as the v twin of the Strom but apart from that and the price difference the tiger wins in every category. Contemplated the change a fair bit and going to keep the v Strom for now. In KZfaq you can find some great videos of this bike doing some serious off road showing that the non believers were wrong! I also have the side panniers and the top case from Triumph and a can ensure they will take anything you need... Brembo breaks are great... WP suspensions are great and you can adapt it on the move as well as the riding modes... In a conclusion i would say that although it's an expensive bike it deserves the money they ask because it's a very complete bike with all those specs it has much more personality than the GS wich is the peoples bike 😂 I tried the Kawasaki versys 1000 se, the Ducati multistrada 1260 and this one captured my heart and mind... Nice review, and reinforces my choice of the Tiger 800. One thing I find annoying about UK reviewers is their mixing and matching of Imperial and metric units. I don't understand how an inside leg measurement of 33" equates to a seat height of 835 m.m. - does it fit? Would it not be easier to say that the seat height of 835 m.m. is nearly 33"? I seem to have answered my own question, but I shouldn't have to do the maths. It's the same with the fuel tank in litres, but MPG is quoted. My Tiger 800 has a four Imperial gallon fuel tank, and I achieve roughly 60 MPG - guess how many miles I can do on one tank of fuel. It's easy to figure out, but not so easy if you quote the tank as having 19 litres.

Hi Tom - thank you very much again for this very good review! I'm really interested in this sort of bikes and I got some comments/questions: 1) some people say the BMW GS 1250 is the best bike on earth (?) - I have to say: not been on the GS, not been on the Tiger 1200 - but the Triumph is looking a lot better :-) 2) where on the helmet is your camera mounted (height of your eyes or below?)? - I'm asking because - if you look on the road, do you look through the windshield all the time or above it (if the shield is in lowest position?). In the video the camera looks on the road always through the shield, no matter which position... (I hope my question is understandable) 3) there are a lot of discussions ongoing what is the perfect size of a adventure/touring bike (if you really want to use it for long touring trips - and not only for a ride to the cafe in the afternoon…). even if the cost/money does not count, some people say they would still rather do their tours with lighter touring bikes than with the biggest class. hm. I rode 4 different middle class touring bikes (Tiger800, Tracer900, BMW800GS, KTM1090Adventure) and I never had the feeling that they are not big enough even for a long tour. unfortunately I have not been on one of these big touring bikes yet. I mean, of course you get some more features with the Tiger1200 but is the comfort also really better when touring 500km than with the Tiger800? I'm sure you can load anything you need on the 800 as well, it has 100hp (or something) - more than enough, cruise control, etc. etc. And maybe the lighter bike is also more practical when riding at really low speeds on a slutchy country road and/or ranking it at the camping site…(?) So Tom please tell me, what is better? light or big? You should know now! I don't know the answer… PLEASE bring light to my ignorance!... :-) thx :-)

Hey Christopher, Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! 1) I hear great things about the GS however its one of the most common bikes on the road I think which makes me tend to lean towards other options. With the GS being used for The Long Way Round it was bound to take a huge chunk of market share for the bigger adventure bikes. I've not ridden one however my impression is that others are just as good. 2) Camera is just below my chin off the front of my helmet. View was through the screen in its highest setting and over the top when I lowered it. It's not a problem having a view through the screen though if that is what your concern is. You get used to it very quickly. 3) It's a difficult question as it really does depend on the adventure you're going on. For a long adventure where you will need a lot of gear I would probably prefer a larger adventure bike. As soon as there is some offroading I would want to go smaller. If there is lots of offroad I would want to go even smaller. A dirt bike and a small amount of camping gear would make an awesome adventure set up, but again depends on the adventure. Someone was telling me about a guy recently who went on an adventure around the world on a sports bike... So there is no true answer I think. I think the perfect bike is different for each adventure but more importantly the adventure is more important than the bike choice. Don't let a bike put you off an adventure, just adapt and enjoy, thats what the adventure is all about :D

@@TommyBarnezTV It was Teapotone that went RTW on a GSXR1000. I agree with what you say about using a smaller bike if you plan to do more off road type of touring. Itchy Boots is going RTW on a Royal Enfield Himalayan 411cc single.( I've just bought one ) She is keeping, mainly, to the smaller roads and has done quite a bit of off roading. That's the sort of touring I intend to do. Take your time getting there. Why blatt along the motorways when you can take a much more gentle approach.

Had one...wayyyyy too top heavy which trust me gets tiring very quickly. Try it fully loaded on tight hilly switchback bends...disconcerting as at low speed it feels it wants to drop all the time. In warmer weather especially around town the egine cooks your thighs and crotch. Moving it around unladen forr a test ride tells you little about how it handles in a touring scenario. Too many distractions on the new tft....hated the buttons on the left for controlling everything...too fiddly. Screen is excellent ....best of all adventure bikes. A road handling is great. Engine is peachy smooth but lacks the punch of the 1200gsa that I have now. The gsa feels much more spritely and has bags more low down grunt. Trumpet seat is great....best pillion seat in the budiness too. Build usnt up to bmw standards imho. Having owned both I prefer the gsa overall...its the better bike but I miss the seat and the aero comfort of the triumph and the addictive howl of that lovely triple. I dont miss the engine heat nir the weight nor the low speed handling. Try a gsa...your eyes will be opened to just how poorly the triump carries its mass and to just how slow on pick up it feeks compared with the big boxer. I wont go back to one.

Great feedback, thanks for adding that. I haven't tried the GS yet but keen to have a go one at some point. They are a bit common on the road here which does put me off a little however they're common for a reason, I've never heard a bad thing about them. The triumph was on the heavy side for me. Havent tried fully loaded and 2 up. I preferred the weight of the 800, just made more sense for riding through a busy city and more open roads. The 1200 was more if a motorway muncher I felt.
@ReferenceFidelityComponents
@ReferenceFidelityComponents 4 жыл бұрын
@@TommyBarnezTV Yes, the 1200 Tiger is more a home on the motorway, 2 up touring and touring with luggage. It is a great A-road bike but not a great single track bike nor one for tight, steep corners when fully loaded. The GS handles like a bike half its weight and pulls off the illusion of feeling more nimble than even the tiger 800 (std GS that is). I thought the same as you and wanted to be different, but after riding a few, I've not looked back. When a bike rides this well and delivers smiles with every ride you won't go back. The only sticking point is reliability. I've been lucky so far but the GS is not the most reliable of bikes but then again Triumph have their fair share of issues too. The engine's generally solid on the GS but things like suspension and switchgear can give issues on the BMW. It's unacceptable in 2019 that not one single manufacturer can offer a bike without flaws at the inflated prices they charge. We wouldn't accept that sort of serviceability when we buy a car and even a well used car is generally more reliable than many new bikes. It shouldn't be a lottery, but it is. You pays your money and makes your choice. To date though I've no regrets with the BMW. It's a fantastic bike.

I’ve had mine for nearly a year now, love the bike, it’s beautiful to ride however the weight is a little high and I have been tempted to change to the Tiger 800 for that reason. I’ve looked at the GS’s but just can’t bring myself to take them seriously. Too much stigma around owning/riding one. Maybe when I am old and grey and have a pipe and slippers then a GS might be more appealing 😂

Boormo Boormo I first rode the 800 about a year after buying the 1200. I couldn’t believe how different it was; taller, narrower, much more softly sprung. It reminded me of a Yamaha DT175! I liked it for a short blast, but wouldn’t ever buy one. I’m sure that anyone that really liked their 800 could easily be disappointed by the 1200 as well! They are just so different. My fear is that the new, lightweight, 1200 (with the double sided swing arm) is going to feel like a bigger 800 and I’d hate that .
