43 today. Some quite tough questions this time! The bonus answer is Neptune, who was the Roman equivalent of the Greek Poseidon. In the arithmetic problem, do the bit in brackets first, so the calculation becomes 8/2x4 Multiplication and division have equal priority and so are performed in the order in which they occur. 8/2x4 therefore becomes 4x4 = 16. This the ONLY correct solution!! Trust me - I taught high school mathematics as a career!

Much better today! 42/50...just squeezed back into Einstein! Regular bonus is Neptune. Math equation is 1. The way I learned it: inside the parenthesis first, so 2 plus 2=4, then multiplication, 2 times 4=8, and finally division, so 8 divided by 8=1. I don't see how the rules would've changed for new math. I'm curious why/how there could be a different answer. ???

On Round 77 of the Ultimate Trivia Quiz, I scored 49/50, admittedly, I had a few guesses. I only missed #27 (surprisingly, as you said). The bonus is Neptune. I almost got my Neptune confused with my Poseidon but remembered that planets are named for the Roman gods. *whew*😆 Now, for that maths bonus question... Using the traditional PEMDAS order of operations, I was taught multiplication THEN division. The answer is "1". Newer math seems to make multiplication and division equal, so you do them as encountered from left to right. This method gives an answer of "16". So, which is correct? I suppose it depends on your math teacher!. Thanks for this excellent quiz.

Nice Quiz. Question 8 can't be right though, unless you meant of the 3 element presented, which one is more abundant. The human body is mostly water and there are twice as many hydrogen atoms as oxygen atoms in water, so there is no way oxygen can be the most abundant element. So just in the water part there is enough hydrogen atoms to account for about half of the total atoms in your body, so it's just not possible for there to be more oxygen. Unless you mean by total weight, since oxygen is 8 times heavier than hydrogen. The math bonus question's answer is 16. The whole pemdas vs bodmas thing is wrong, they are the same. Also there's no old way vs new way. The common mistake is to think that the multiplication outside the parentheses has anything to do with solving inside the parentheses first. The other common mistake is that there is a preference of multiplication above division. They have equal preference and has to be solved from left to right. So the answer of 1 isn't "also correct".

I admire your skill in providing such an interesting variety of questions. But.... Question 2 is problematic. None of the answer options are cells. Only 38/50 today. I learned a lot of vocabulary I didn't know I lacked. I didn't think there was a difference between classical and modern math. The order of priority is parenthesis, multiplication and divisions, and addition and subtraction in that order, therefore the answer to your equation is 16. The other bonus is Neptune.

BUT .. if, as you say, multiplication comes before division the answer is 1
@CaptHollister
@CaptHollister Жыл бұрын
@@MrMousley There's no priority between multiplication and division, they are performed left to right. That's why I didn't put a comma between them. Likewise, there is no priority between addition and subtraction, they are also performed left to right.

the answer is actually 16 not 1 it is because of MDAS, multiplication and division have the same precedence so as addition and subtraction therefore you should calculate first on what's on the left side, so in that case after it becomes 8÷2×4 it transforms into 4×4=16. Even if you input this equation 8÷2(2x2) in any type of calculator the answer is always 16. Thank me later!😅

I got 16(the right answer) then created a prompt to ask ChatGPT for clarification and got this answer “Hello, this is Copilot. I am happy to help you with math problems. 😊 The viral math problem 8/2(2+2) has caused a lot of debate on the internet because it can be interpreted in different ways depending on the order of operations. The order of operations is a set of rules that tells us which calculations to do first in an expression. There are two main methods of order of operations: PEMDAS and BODMAS. PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication-Division, Addition-Subtraction. BODMAS stands for Brackets, Orders, Division-Multiplication, Addition-Subtraction. Both methods agree that we should simplify the parentheses or brackets first, so we get 8/2(4). The difference comes in the next step. According to PEMDAS, we should do division and multiplication from left to right, so we get 8/2(4) = 4(4) = 16. According to BODMAS, we should do division and multiplication in the order they appear, so we get 8/2(4) = 8/8 = 1. The correct answer according to the modern interpretation of the order of operations is 1612. This is how most calculators, programming languages, and textbooks would evaluate the expression. However, some people may argue that the expression is ambiguous and can have two different answers, 16 or 13. This is because historically, the division symbol ÷ was used to imply parentheses around the denominator, so 8÷2(4) would mean 8÷(2(4)) = 1. To avoid confusion, it is better to use parentheses or fractions to make the expression clear. I hope this helps you understand the viral math problem and the order of operations. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. 😊”

That was my reasoning as well. I did B.Sc at varsity... with calculus as a subject.... so I wouldn't consider myself a total maths idiot... But apparently this way of doing the calculation is consider "classic" maths. Using the modern method should give an answer of 16. All concerning to be honest. About the initial bonus question: first, you are stuck with what your calculator does in that situation, and they don't all do the same thing. Second: context, please! I want to know what one is trying to calculate. I want to be able to write r = C/2π and be understood, when C is circumference and r is radius. I also want to be able to write E = 1/2 mv² for kinetic energy, and be understood. In the latter case, I could write E = ¹/₂mv², E = ½mv², or E = mv²/2. But I still want to be understood. So let's just throw out these kinds of questions.
@detormentis

Context is simply that question appearing on a test paper... find the answer. And I calculated it without a calculator, to get to my answer of 1. Brackets (2+2) =4. Then Multiply with the 2 before the brackets to get 8. Finally 8 divided by 8 gives 1. My final answer. Interesting though, if I run it through a DAL calculator, I get 16 as my answer.

I find it funny they all got them right but none got the bonus. As posidon is God of the seas, like the red , Caspian, or black but his uncle oceanus is the brother of Saturn cronos as it states in Mesopotamia enlil zues and his uncle oceanus this is why everyone is misunderstanding posidons roll in the mythology. Like when they think zues was the top dog but was not oceanus is the godhead and controls all the aspects of contiousness. Just so you know.
