Xanax has saved my life, multiple times. It’s the break glass in case of emergency - I go to therapy, sleep, see friends, have a job, exercise…but sometimes, you gotta hit the snooze button on the very dark thoughts. Half a pill, 20 mins, she says YOU BETTALAYLOW and the episode is over. Truly a gift. What’s scary is the number of bottles I’ve had that have expired because I get prescribed so much, but I don’t use most of them. So, there you go. Actual human need vs the pharmaceutical industry.

I read an interesting article recently where the brain waves of people reading and listening to an audiobook were measured, and all the same areas of activity lit up, showing almost no difference to the brain. The theory was that it’s because the person still had to imagine the story regardless of how it was input. I really enjoyed the article because they made the case that people who have reading comprehension issues, or vision impairment, or dyslexia, or any host of reading problems can still be literary, and it made me happy! So go forth and absorb all the literature you want, however you want, and don’t let the “book purists” scare you off or yuck your yum!
@dayglowbimbo
@dayglowbimbo 8 ай бұрын
IDK if we read the same article or not, but I read one that argued that for as long as we’ve been here, we’ve been sharing stories with each other orally - obviously, a lot longer than books have been out. That really changed my perception of audiobooks as technically “not reading” and therefore not as legit as reading physical books.
@supinedream
@supinedream 8 ай бұрын
@@dayglowbimbo Exactly. It isn’t the physical book that creates the experience. It’s the imagination. And because of that, audiobooks can produce all the same benefits of reading. They help to build empathy and vocabulary, and a whole host of things in the same way reading does. So for everyone out there struggling with literacy, just know you have options, and don’t let anyone make you feel like less of a “reader”!
@agnespethes
@agnespethes 3 ай бұрын
With a half a year delay I watched the episode and I found this topic very interesting. :) Just a little thing that I'd add to your comment. I work with blind and visually impaired people. Once we had a conference about audiobooks. Where the majority of the blinds told us, that they are not fond of the genre, instead, if they want to read something they use their voice over apps on their phones, laptops etc. The reason of that was, that audiobooks are usually read by actors, who already add something to the story. And they really want to digest that on their own, personal way. So the dry (to my ears really annoying) AI generated voice, that is far from perfect (at least in my language) is more preferable for the visually impaired audience. I found this very interesting. As it seemed that wanted to have the most freedom possible. An extra detail: reading Braille with fingers it's a special skill. Even though in the segregated special schools students learn it, most of them won't be able to use it, only on a very basic level (like reading the buttons of an elevator).
@supinedream
@supinedream 3 ай бұрын
@@agnespethes That’s so interesting! I can definitely see how the AI voice might be preferable. I know I’ve been annoyed many times by the actor’s interpretation in an audiobook! But I usually just tolerate it for the sake of a good story! It just goes to show how varied and wonderful the literary experience can be, no matter how you get your books 😊!

Trixies talk on Xanax is so real. I was on it for 4 years. Never abused it, and always took it as prescribed. But it genuinely makes you feel like everything is good. I remember thinking all the time when I was on it, "this must be how normal people feel all the time." It was like my eyes were open, everything felt clearer and easier to process I constantly feared I'd end up becoming addicted or abusing it but thankfully I never did. I ended up switching to an anti depressant and haven't needed the Xanax in years But it truly is an incredible feeling of like clarity I could see how easier people become addicted because it's such a peaceful calm feeling

Forgive my ignorance, but if you have anxiety to this extent, why is it bad/scary/dangerous when a prescribed medication brings you out of the anxiety and into a mindset where everything is good? This is a genuine question because I always thought of depression/anxiety type "disorders" (apologies if that's the wrong term) happened when your brain has an imbalance of some hormone (?), and the medication helps to mimic or produce that missing element so that your depression/anxiety isn't negatively impacting your life. If Xanax does that for some, why is it concerning? Hopefully my question makes sense and isn't too stupid 😅 and appreciate any information

I understand the fear of medication that is also a common recreational drug, but if you suffer from anxiety or depression or adhd, your brain chemistry is literally different and therefore reacts to these medications differently than neurotypical individuals. For anyone, go with what feels right in addition to psychiatric recommendation. If these drugs really help you function and see the world in a more healthy or realistic way, give yourself a little leeway, especially if you have a psychiatrist you trust that you can consult. *Context: neuroscientist who also just got prescribed a similar life-changing kind of medication that caused similar anxieties* Sending love❤

Chronic pain patient here - I can pay, out of pocket, for all the thc I want (which would be more than $300 per month at the very least) or I can pay a $3.25 co-pay for a tiny, tiny amount of pain meds. My pain is constantly under treated because of the opioid epidemic. First they over-prescribed and now the pendulum has swung the other way far too far. In order to take even the smallest amount of pain meds, I have to sign a pain contract that has all kinds of stipulations. If you make one mistake they kick you off. If insurance covered thc, I'd be all over that shit.

This episode was so good with the usual jokes and ricocheting between topics and extra (extra) organically flowing conversation. Added bonus a lot of warmth that I see extended into the comment section! I’m loving the interesting and informative replies. Also I don’t enjoy graphic novels because to me they’re actually harder to focus on but I still consider that “reading books!”

As a library clerk listening to audio books and reading graphic novels and manga does count as reading a book ❤
@booksandhoes
@booksandhoes 9 ай бұрын
@caffeine_squirrel audio books are great tool to help children read which is many libraries carry read-a-loud book that come with an almost mp3 like player that allows them to hear someone reading to them as they read a loud. Audio books are also a great way for people with long commutes and for those losing their vision or vision impaired. The American Library Association, actually recommended graphic novels and manga to students struggling with reading comprehension, students struggling with the transition between picture books and chapter books, and for teens who have lost a desire to read or have no interest in reading. The ALA also encourages people who want to gain confidence in reading or get back into read to reread books from their childhood, whether that's pictures book from elementary school or beginner chapter books, young adult, etc because if if you have a positive memory of it you are more likely to go into the experience with a positive mindset and view reading favorably. These things are not the problem. The problem stems from a lack reading encouragement in the home from a young age as well as underpaid teachers at underfunded schools who try as best as they can to help to students but many families aren't will to help outside the classroom. The ALA has done research and parents sitting down with their child for 30 minutes of reading a night can improve a students reading level and comprehension by a whole a grade level. They have also done studies that show teens are more likely to stop reading altogether after being shamed for enjoying things like graphic novels, manga, and even fan fiction by a parent.

11:30 Good shout by Trixie. Everybody's situation is unique, but having watched benzos do their worst on a close family member, I feel pretty confident that in most cases it shouldn't be prescribed for general anxiety. Popping a xanax during a panic attack is one thing, but taking doses every day, multiple times a day is dangerous. There are other medications available that work well.

@@charsmith1804 I can't overstate how big of an accomplishment that is, I am so proud of you, but more importantly I hope you are proud of yourself. Hello girls I am a librarian at Cornell University. I love Katya with all of my heart but sadly she is wrong. We do consider reading graphic novels and listening to audiobooks as reading a book. At this point, we just want people to read and to feel good about themselves, reading, so any type of reading, whether it be through audiobook, format, or through pictures, it counts, because you are getting the story and the information into your brain somehow instead of rotting away on TikTok. *I made this text to voice KZfaq comment on my way home from work and came back to this mess. I’d like to further clarify : I don’t really care. It came off harsh due to the robot tone. Katya can have that opinion and so can you! This is mine and this is what most librarians believe. I heard these two whores talking about something I actually know a little bit about and chimed in ! Bye !

A graphic novel is not reading. Audiobooks are arguably different; you are still processing written language as read out loud, so it’s still entirely linguistic in nature. But looking at pictures in a ‘graphic novel’ is a different form of content altogether, and is not proper ‘reading’, even less so than watching a movie or play is ‘reading’, and I think we can all safely agree that that certainly isn’t. It’s a form of artistic content and it’s enriching to the mind for sure. But it’s categorically not real reading.

Imo listening to an audiobook is not reading bc it automatically changes ones experience of the story by phrasing, voice, pacing, etc. To clarify, I still count listening to an audiobook as like a book a Goodreads but I don't think you are reading it - you are more experiencing it. Another example is a word for word graphic novel from a novel originally without pictures. The mere addition of pictures fundamentally changes the experience, so why wouldn't someone's voice change my perception of a story?
