I have been learning everything I can from every guitar and/or bass building company I know of, since getting my first at 14 years old, and now am applying all these lessons to the instrument building business started by my wife and I recently. I can safely say that I have learned the most about running this type of business, and about building high end instruments, from PRS.

I got the Zach about 18 months ago, and even though I have a PRS Mira, and US made Tele and 60th anniversary Strat, both of which I love, the Zach has kind of taken over my #1 spot. First, I think it's fantastic sounding at all pickup positions, has a real purity of sound, the neck is beautifully playable with the satin finish and shape, plus it's a super comfortable guitar for ergonomics including the light weight. I noticed you didn;t say too much about that, so just noting that, a great guitar when sitting down especially. The blue finish is stunning and contrasts beautifully with the naturally finished parts, let alone the headstock matching finish. So many people note its value for price too, just another virtue and many saying this could easily list for twice its price.

Glad to see you have done a PRS SE. I have two SE's from Indonesia and one from Korea. I also have a Squire bass from Indonesia. All of the instruments I got new and were ready to go out of the box. i have never had to have fret work or even a basic setup. Indonesia is the premier Asian string instrument manufacture in my experience. I am not sure if PRS is still performing final QC checks on SE's before they are shipped out to dealers and distributors in the age of Covid. But I do believe that was an important step to maintain a QC level. PRS produced some videos, one of them detailed the process they go through when they get SE's delivered. They have an entire team go over every guitar doing a QC as well as a setup. They showed the pallet of the ones that did not pass. There are some dealers in NA that are able to get SE seconds and sell them at a discount. They are upfront and honest about all imperfections or issues. I have found they will upgrade them by swapping out the fixed wrap tailpiece with a fully tailpiece with full intonation and brass saddles.

I’m kind of new at playing guitars, been playing for about five years, for me it’s always been about acoustic guitars. Mostly own Martin’s. I do have a Siegel. And I have a couple classical guitars. I thought I’d never play electric. Then I went over to a friends house who has about six electric guitars, and just for fun I played around with his. The last one I played was this very guitar, and instantly fell in love with it. The tones are amazing, and the ease of play was incredible. Love the thick neck. Long story short, turned right around and bought one. Now I’m learning, slowly, all about electric guitars. So glad to see this video, kind of makes me feel better about my first electric. Thanks!

The PRS SE guitars that I have tried in the last 5 years have been some of the best guitars that I have ever played. (As long as you aren't trying to get "That" Les Paul... or Strat. The SE's can be a great workhorse guitar that have a lot of sounds to provide.... but they only come "close" to "That L.P. or Strat" tone. There is the "EG" model with 3 single coils if you want to get closer to the Strat sound... but it is still slightly different.) Love my two PRS SE guitars!

I have one of these. For clean tones, the magic happens in the middle position on the pickups. I actually played some green Day songs with it on the bridge and it still sounded great. It's my go-to for recording clean tones still. It's amazing for the price, just don't expect a djenty metal machine and you'll be really happy.

Regarding the back covers, even on the $2300 CE24 Semi-hollow, those things aren't routed out so they stick out at the trem cover and control cover. It'd be nice if they were flush. Still, I love these satin finished necks and gloss bodies. The body is protected and the finish won't wear but the neck will feel great. That CE24SH has it too. How did you do that wild vibration look at 4:30 ?

The 12th fret inlay on the blue SE you talked about is a fluer de lis. You see that in a lot of french settlements in Louisiana and Canada not to mention France. I love the band Shine Down nut don't care much for the covers. Likely because they're overplayed. I will give PRS this . They make a damned good looking guitar not to mention very playable for a decent price.

I picked up the green series needing a light single cut for some gigs I had booked instead of bringing a heavy LP. Had and still have no idea who he is or anything about his band but I will say he specs out a great guitar. The neck finish is something I haven't experienced before and I really like it. It feels and sounds as good as anything twice the price I've got laying around. Though the pickup switch is buggy and needs replacing, other than that it's a great guitar for the money.

I bought one of these - I was close to pulling the trigger on the Green one, but they then announced the updated Blue. This thing is all about little details that just elevate it - the gloss stinger with satin back on the neck. The headstock veneer that is usually only on higher-end PRS models - SE and S2 usually have plain or painted headstocks. The high end wrap-around bridge with big brass saddles and intonation screws. The strap buttons - large diameter and with a wide flat base that do hold well to straps (unless you are really throwing it around). Way better than Fenders inverted cone that almosty guides the strap off of it. The stain on the veneer - how they manage to create movement in a thin veneer I'll never know - it's sheer magic. The rosewood neck on mine looks a touch darker than yours (camera effect?) and mine has a couple of lighter streaks in it - that I really like. There is colour variation in the tops too - some have a greenish undertone, some whiter and the depth of blue varies a bit. Since the veneer is real wood, I expect there would be some variation in it. Mine DOES NOT have any veneer on the back - you can clearly see the 3 pieces of the body and they do not appear to have been chosen as to match. It looks like 3 pieces from 3 different trees - not that I care to be honest. The covers proud of the back, I think, are the compromise demanded by PRS in exchange for the headstock veneer - to trim the production cost back. The green version has flush covers but no veneer. I may go to locking tuners, graphtec nut and maybe brass/nickel covers (or pickup swap) on mine - but it's not necessary right now. (and some have suggested a treble bleed mod) Maybe in a few years if I want a change. Oh, and I like the sound of it unplugged - it makes late night practice non-marriage threatening :)

Quick comment on the control covers sitting proud--as a guitar tech I MUCH prefer they sit the way they do. You have no idea how frustrating it is (and how many covers I've ruined as a result) to struggle with trying to pry one of the recessed covers. I mean, it's not like they get in the way any at all when playing.

I had an SEone and it was a great well made guitar with frets like glass. That was Korean made but the Indonesian ones seem pretty good too. Head and shoulders above Epiphones

I absolutely agree that Zebra pickups would look better, or wood pickup rings. I also would prefer the CNC vertical mill run the roughing end mill about 15 to 25 seconds longer, and run the finisher about 30 to 40 seconds longer, to cut a very shallow pocket for the control cavity cover and switch cavity cover to sit flush ro the body. That's not just a guess pulled out of... nowhere... that's an estimate based on years of experience programmung and running many CNC machines, a wide variety of tooling, dozens and dozens of extremely diverse workpiece materials, and years of building guitars and basses. The rougher could be a little faster, finisher probably a little slower...

They were in the green version. On top may be the compromise due to Zach asking for a headstock veneer on an SE (usually reserved for the Core models and above) so they had to trim the cost of manufacture elsewhere. I have one and I'd take the stained, flamed headstock veneer over flush covers any day of the week.

I have one and it’s hard to remember it’s an SE. I’ve done all the core upgrades to mine and it hangs with the cores I own.

PRS do sell the core style pickup rings. However they don’t always fit all SE’s. For the record they DO fit to a SE Custom 24. Look much nicer.

My 2008 Korean SE has a recessed cavity cover, but not recessed trem block cover. Guess they got tired of routing the one cover.

I own one of the green ZM models. Couple things, the tuners aren't actually glow in the dark, all though that shade of green makes you think they should. Also mine is a 1 piece neck instead of the 3 piece. No back veneer on mine either....interesting!

These REALLY need covered pickups. They make me think of a BMW 7 series with Honda Civic wheels. Actually, the pickups in general are the are the weak point on this guitar. They sound dead and lifeless, but at least I don't think they're the typical overly hot SE pickup. I think if you dropped a $100 set of Toneriders you'd be golden.

I'm an old man that has played everything. The big 3. Fender, Gibson, P.R.S. They all have quality guitars. In my opinion which means nothing, I was and still love a cool L.P. But I have to say I rather give my money to Mr. Smith. Paul is too cool and so into his product and his guitars are top of the line. The necks are a work of art, the tone. Even the S.E. that are built overseas are sent back to Maryland to have the team look it over before it goes out. I can get the action as close to the fret board as ever wanted. A great company and a great guitar and a cool owner.

Epiphone should take note of prs when it comes to making a lower budget guitar! Its one of the only guitars I've ever owned that came almost perfectly setup for £800 out of the box I could have gigged with it!
