They actually used to have doors to the outside on the upper levels for stuff that couldn't fit on the stairs. They still have them on some barns. They used pulley systems for the doors

At 3:57 when Ellis is asking why Alex is putting doors down, I remembered that's how I build my houses for NPCs. Alex, you are not the only good architect around. WE SHALL BUILD A DOOR EMPIRE.

They used to have doors to the outside on houses, they were used to get furniture in that couldn't fit up the stairs. They had a pulley system and everything.
