In this video we talk about how to do turns on the trombone. It comes from a lip slur (in the same way a trill does)

I would argue that vibrato, air accents, and complex phrasing are the accents when techniques like turns, glisses, shakes, etc. are the sprinkles/decorations

I mean I think it’s all the same basic stuff. If your solo is a cake, then all the turns, vibrato, glisses etc are all the decorations that make it more appealing I guess

Thank you! I have heard a few trombonists that are masters of turns, but never understood how to do them myself. Now I can experiment.

This is something that came naturally to me, then I had a young high school student ask me what the funny marking in a piece was. I was taught it was called a grepetto or flip. I tried to explain it then remembered this video. Thanks Paul.

Thanks Paul. From an old guy going back to the horn. Now I see how lip slurs are so important, so back to that.

Usually when I pick up a brass instrument I pick up a baritone horn. Same mouthpiece, same embouchure, except valves instead of a slide. It's a fun instrument. I suppose the point I am trying to make here is that this video is very helpful not only to trombonists, but other brass instrumentalists and non brass players alike. In fact, I even applied some of what you were saying to piano and guitar! Although, with guitar instead of pushing through the partials and doing a lip slur, it was the case of using hammer-ons and pull-offs to get a similar effect.

Hey so I'm on bass trombone. How do I do a turn on a lower octave where the harmonics are farther apart. Maybe even in trigger range?

Hi Paul (namesake) - Just took up trombone after a 40 year layoff! Found your channel and am taking my playing to a higher lever now. So. Thanks a lot. I turned to your channel to try to understand how to play a specific turn - if I might trouble you... it is in a YT video called "Minor Blues - J.J. Johnson Transcription" The turn in the 3rd bar (and subsequent). Can you advise on how to play it? Which slide positions? Much appreciated if you come across this comment and can find to time to cook up an answer. Paul.

Start at the note, preferably as far in as possible. Move the slide out and rip up through the partials with your embouchure.
