Exactly, people who made fun of it just didn't get it. It floated that interesting line between literal sci-fi and utter fantasy. Anything the story was taking in a fantasy direction, the "sci-fi literalism enforcers" hated it. The real mistake was that the movie was marketed to the tech nerds, so they were expecting it to be "something that could actually happen", which of course it wasn't. They dissected it on that basis, which of course the story would crumble under that kind of analysis. Had the film been promoted as being more fantasy-minded, it probably would have been better received.

@@Cre80s I disliked it because it the acting and style reminded me of mediocre 70s TV shows. It really had nothing to do with a sentiment that "it couldn't happen". To put it another way, other than the special effects, it felt dated to me even in 1982.

@Docsavage, how is it not? Using computers to film, light, dress a scene is just as much art as doing it with a real world tools. Art isn’t simply something you apply to canvas, or sculpt at of rock, art is something done from the imagination of a human and using the a computer to make it is no different. With your attitude humans would still be drawing on caves and never changing mediums and or tools to produce new forms of art, or its like saying using a a typewriter or a word processor isn’t true writing or art because it’s not done by hand with pen and paper.

It's very much worth finding a "Making of TRON" documentary somewhere! Those graphics were done on graph-paper by hand. And how they did the lighting effects... it really was groundbreaking. And a bit of trivia: TRON is a BASIC command for "TRace ON" that would print out each line of a program as it was run. For finding bugs. The opposite was TROFF.

Have you seen Iron Man? Bridges was in that too. Bruce Boxleitner (Tron) never had much to do with the SciFi crowd. He said he didn't understand it, but he often was confronted with it due to Tron. Later, he was lead in Babylon 5. Still, he avoided the scene, but on the dvd commentaries he spoke about going to a convention, and having his eyes opened. He had no idea, and it totally changed his point-of-view. He actually embraced it to the point that he was going back (watching) to get more details on his work to better answer and interact with fans. He was blown away by their loyalty.

There's a lot less CG in this than it seems like. The sets and costumes were real, and the "computer" lighting effects were added by rotoscoping - the film was hand-painted. A similar technique was used for most of the blasters in Star Wars (before the digital remastering). Rotoscoping was also used in 2D animation to paint characters over a live-action model to get more realistic movement. The animated "Lord of the Rings" was done that way, as was the "Taarna" sequence of "Heavy Metal". Rotoscoping is one of those things that's become a lost art, but when it was done well it was beautiful.

1982 was a big year for Sci Fi/fantasy films. Tron, Blade Runner, The Thing, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, ET, Poltergeist, Conan the Barbarian, The Dark Crystal, Beastmaster. Many of these films are much bigger now than they were when they were released. The Thing and Blade Runner bombed. But became highly regarded enough to get sequels decades later (a prequel in the case of The Thing). Tron and The Dark Crystal were expected to be big $100 million box office movies, but barely made half that amount. But they developed a big enough following to warrant a sequel and a streaming series respectively decades later. Beastmaster didn't make its money back ($14 million from $9 million budget), yet it still got a sequel. But it got such good ratings on cable that it got a spin-off TV series over 15 years later.

"Tron" and "Looker" were the first two movies to make extensive use of CGI. "Looker" actually preceded "Tron" in the cinema. "Looker" is a crime drama and action movie. The CGI doesn't hold up well, but the story has not only held up but has more relevance today. It was written and directed by Michael Crichton, and features Albert Finney, James Coburn, and Susan Dey. It also features a pretty cool sound track. "Tron: Legacy" is the 2010 sequel to "Tron". It's a much better movie all around. Its tagline is "the game has changed". Bridges and Boxleitner reprise their roles from the first movie and Daft Punk are featured. "Tron: Uprising" is an Emmy Award winning animated TV series (19 episodes) that continues the story. Lots of recognizable voice actors, including Elijah Wood, Lance Henrikson, Tricia Helfer, and Paul Reubens. Bruce Boxleitner also reprises his role from the movies. Other commenters recommended "Krull". Great fantasy movie, featuring Liam Neeson, Robbie Coltrain, Ken Marshall, Alun Armstrong, Francesca Annis, and Freddie Jones. These were early roles for some of these actors who went on to prominence.

Most computers in media were treated like literal magic, and it was impressive how many CORRECT terms Tron worked in, even in the background. "Watch out for nested macros" for example... in the 80's that was some straight up gibberish to 90% of the audience. Believe it or not there was actually supposed to be a love scene between when Tron picks up Yori and them getting to the IO Tower, but it didn't quite work with the pacing. It's on KZfaq if you search, complete with interviews with the creative team about it.

And yet... according to several interviews and the DVD commentary, the writer/director denied knowing that TRON was an actual program command (TRaceON), for monitoring program behavior, when choosing to name the film and the titular program that did just that. I can't accept such an unbelievable coincidence or understand why they would deny it.

This has always been one of my favorite movies. It was considered groundbreaking at the time, and still looks visually appealing today. However, technology has advanced quite a bit since then - it would take a couple thousand of those desktops they're using to get the same computing power you find in your average smartphone today

Back in 82 this was mind-blowing. I was trying to get my Commodore 64 to load programs off a cassette tape and it often took dozens of attempts before even the simplest game would load. Prior to that I had on Oric, where it took 24 hours to type in the program line by line. There are several docos about the making of Tron because it was so ahead of its time. The movie gets a mention in an episode of the Simpsons when Homer gets high and imagines he is in 'Tron'.

Saw Tron in theaters with my best friend Chris. I think I had my mouth open throughout. I had nothing to compare it with. My mind was a blank. After the movie ended and the lights came back on, Chris and I said, “I like that!” The late Cindy Morgan and Bruce Boxleitner appeared in the 1982-83 TV series ‘Bring ‘em Back Alive!’, Boxleitner as a big-game hunter who brought them back alive, patterned after Indiana Jones.

Bunny, I am confident that buried somewhere in the comments is this fact but just in case it isn't: the standing cabinet TRON game in the arcades consisted of four sub-games. The sub-games are as follows: I/O Tower The player must guide Tron to the flashing circle of an Input/Output Tower within a set time limit while avoiding or destroying Grid Bugs. This game is based on the I/O Tower scene in the film, while adding the Grid Bugs as enemies (which were only briefly mentioned in the film). A bit occasionally appears on the screen and can be picked up for bonus points. MCP Cone The player must break through a rotating shield wall protecting the MCP cone and enter the cone without touching any of the shield blocks. This game is based on Tron's final battle with the MCP in the film, but changes the nature of the MCP's shield. Bonus points are awarded for destroying every block in the shield. Light Cycles In a player-vs-AI variant of the Snake game concept, the player guides Tron's blue Light Cycle in an arena against one or more yellow opponents. The objective is to force the enemy cycles to crash into walls, jet trails, or each other, while simultaneously avoiding them. When an enemy cycle crashes, both it and its trail disappear. This game is based on the Light Cycle Arena sequence in the film, though the colors of the friendly and enemy characters are reversed. This is the only sub-game in Tron to not use the rotary dial. Battle Tanks The player must guide Tron's red battle tank through a maze and destroy all of the opposing blue enemy tanks by shooting each of them three times. The tank can warp to a random location in the maze by moving into a diamond in the center, and its shots bounce off walls or obstructions until reaching their maximum travel distance. In higher difficulty levels, the enemy tanks are replaced by red Recognizers that are much faster and attempt to collide with the player instead of shooting at him/her. This game is not based on any particular scene, but is rather based on Tank Program elements, including Clu's failed intrusion into the ENCOM mainframe and the "Space Paranoids" game featured at the beginning of the film.

@@inhumanmusic1411 Could it be: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discs_of_Tron Gameplay edit The gameplay of Discs of Tron is based on several scenes in the Tron film, combining the jai alai-like combat between Flynn and Crom with the disc combat between Tron and Sark. The player controls Tron in a one-on-one battle with Sark, presented in a fixed three-dimensional view behind Tron. Using a control scheme similar to that of the original Tron arcade game, the player moves around with a joystick, throws discs using a trigger button, and defends with a thumb button. The player uses a rotary dial to move a targeting reticle around the arena walls, and in later levels the player can also pull up and push down on the knob to aim up and down. Each match takes place in a closed arena on top of platforms made of concentric disks, like in the jai alai sequence. Tron and Sark attempt to destroy each other by either directly hitting their opponent or causing him to fall off his platform. Tron and Sark can each throw up to three discs at a time. Assuming it is not destroyed, each disc automatically returns to the player (destroyed discs regenerate). Tron can defend himself by hitting Sark's discs with his own or by using a deflector, of which he has a limited supply. Sark can additionally attack Tron with high-speed missiles, chaser orbs, and "super chasers" (which consist of an orb and two orbiting disks), which cannot be deflected. In later levels, platforms begin to move up and down vertically, requiring the player to aim up and down as well. Tron and Sark can bounce discs off the ceiling (similar to the energy ball in the jai alai sequence) with the goal of hitting one of their opponent's platforms. If successful, the platform flashes briefly and then disappears, reducing the character's movement or possibly causing him to fall and die. The platform reappears after about ten seconds. For some levels, a continuously scrolling wall of blocks appears between Tron and Sark; these blocks must be destroyed to open gaps in the wall before either character can hit the other. The game has a total of twelve levels, with Sark becoming more aggressive throughout the game. Once the twelfth level is completed, levels repeat from six to twelve until the player runs out of lives.

Amazing how the movie Tron gets the problems and conflicts with software and specifically gaming that are still with us: IP, security-security of IP. It looks excellent. I think the art director in some scenes achieved a look of an Egyptian hieroglyphics with sort of 2D+ for the characters. I enjoyed watching this along with the comments and fun graphics from bunny. You must, must, MUST see Tron Legacy!!! ASAP! If you liked Tron you'll love Tron Legacy! It's one of my favorite movies! In Tron, the graphics were farmed out to several companies. One company could do vector graphics well (the city) while another company could do 3-d(ish) solid shapes well (like the light cycles.) It would take hours to render one frame! Their costumes were rotoscoped... by hand! That means they had to cut out masks for every frame where the costumes were shown! The good guys were accented in blue and the bad guys in red, but they made some mistakes toward the end of the movie and it was too much work to go back and correct it.

There's less CGI than you might think. A lot of it is hand drawn animation done to match the look of the actual CGI. What's crazy is the sheer amount of visual effects in this movie. Half the movie is people acting against black backgrounds that needed to be replaced. And, of course, the glowing lines on the actors were added to every shot. This was the precursor to films like _Sky Captain_ and _Sin City._

I thought it looked very cool but i didnt get it. I was 8 and there werent alot of movies with this type of look at the time. Not for kids at least. This was a very adult concept movie about the coming computer age. I love this movie now. Kids of the 80s were moving through a very great time in history. The computer age. Everything was new. Video games calculators digital watches sony walkmans it was a glorious time. As i got a little older this movie was awesome. This is definitely a classic, and where many later concepts for CGI graphics and "computer worlds" came from. 31:33 "... just long enough for you to get the disk in"... hmm, was that some kind of double entendre? 31:36 "What a floppy drive floozy!" 🤣 good line! If she has her way there won't be any 'floppy' drives when she's around... sorry, couldn't resist that! Ok, that's enough or I'll start to sound as if my mind is as single-track as those speeding light-cycles! 😅 Such a landmark film, and a totally fresh concept at the time. Awesome! I love this movie. If you can find it, I highly recommend watching [on your own time] the "making of" documentary. It will blow your mind. To me, this movie and The Black Hole represent an incredible period in Disney history where they took real chances by moving into darker subjects within science fiction. From a profit standpoint, it didn't really work out. And it's a shame because I consider this movie in particular, a classic. The light cycle scene for me is still one of the greatest scenes in special effects. Groundbreaking, really, the same way stop motion impacted the industry in 1933 with King Kong. Plus, I just love snarky Jeff Bridges. He's the man.

For its time Tron was an epic endeavour in digital cinema. This was before 3D rendering software started to take off, so every polygon had to be mapped manually. For example when Flynn was driving the Security tank, every block had to be mapped out and the co-ordinates for the location of each corner of each block had to be entered in manually for every frame. Additionally the lighting effects on everyone's clothes and the backgrounds whilst inside the System required manually painting the matt lines onto the film by hand frame by frame, --- END OF LINE
