The British are and always were the best in parades. The slow march spreads out so much dignity, I say this as a German. The goosesteping Prussians appear really silly against that. And the Brits always had the best militarymusicians.

The brits WERE the best in parade and drill in this (the video) era. But today, I would say no. Because countries like China, North korea, India, Indonesia military parades are now close to perfection

@@patriot4786 ...got to agree. None of the Commonwealth countries, other than India and a couple of others, can compete with the almost choreographed parade ground prowess of the countries you've mentioned. Might as well throw the Chileans in there while you're at it.

It's interesting to note that as the mounted cortège of equerries and mounted dignitaries stride about the guardsmen, you can note the audience members removing their hats and bowing/curtsying to the Duke of Connaught as he passes by at 2:00 ~ 2:15.

Would love to know what those funny looking pillows are on the back of the soldiers as it seems strange to see them as we are so used to the way our soldiers uniforms are in the 21st century and the guns they carry have changed as well. Amazing to watch a moment in time that for many of us not born in the early part of the 20th century to witness living history. How smart everybody dressed up in their sunday best to watch Trooping the Colour and pay tribute to their reigning monarch of the time. Wonderful footage of such a grand occasion we still enjoy today with our fabulous soldiers today. #GodSaveTheKing

I’m pretty sure it’s their daysack, as they are wearing their webbing aswell, and look to have a sleeping bag or something rolled up. They still wore fighting order equipment for quite a few years after the uniforms were changed from redcoats. I’ve seen it on trooping of the colour and guard videos from ww1 til the 30s. Possibly to store ammo and stuff they would actually need to guard, as now they are more ceremonial and probably wouldn’t shoot anyone.

Before 1936 the Footguards wore their greatcoats folded into a square on the upper back and the wet weather cape was rolled up into a sausage shape and worn on the back of the waistbelt. After 1936 The never to be crowned king Edward the VIII decided to change the regulations, getting rid of the greatcoat altogether and having the wet weather cape folded into a square and worn in the place of the old greatcoats, just slightly lower on the neck. The webbing was called the Slade Wallace equipment. This kind of full dress was worn up until the Second world war but was never reintroduced again.

2:58 so, in this era, the British do the goose-step too for slow march, albeit a bit "truncated", unlike today. Nothing wrong of it with the Germany-descended monarch. We still can see the goose-step remnants today at the second last step before when the foot stamp.

Sound delay, Duke of York was played for the neutral slow march. The Scots Guards were trooping their colour that day, reason why Garb of Old Gaul is played.

The bear skins seem a little taller and they have bayonets on the end of their rifles. Amazing footage. 😮

Oh dear. Foot drill in the modern era bears no resemblance to what we see here. Cute little bunny hops to the rear, and a slow march that looks like a walk down the promenade. I was going to liken it to a truncated goose step, but that would have been too cruel, although it wouldnt have been out of place with a monarch with German ancestry reviewing the parade!

@@crazyfishmonster459 ..somewhere along the line, the British Army decided to overemphasize the sharpness of personal, and weapon drill, to the extent that it bears little resemblance to what was acceptable parade and guard mounting drill at the turn of the 19th Century. A quick check of the drill manuals should verify when the changes took place.

@@juliusschwencke142 I think from 1945. There is an apocryphal tale of Monty being v impressed by the Russian drill in Berlin. Telling the Guards Armoured Division to sharpen it up. It has stayed thus ever since. It is much sharper and more visually impressive. "Bend the knee with the thigh parallel with the ground and drive the foot in" Swinging the arms shoulder high was also only for recruits in training. "Force the arm to the rear". Of course the Royal Marines still use the old drill.

he was there in plane sight how can you miss him he stands out like a sore thumb. another key thing hes waring a different type of bear skin too. its flatter on the top. thats how u also find the king.

We have the most combat tested and proven army in a generation. Virtually all SNCOs and middle ranking officers have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Silly comment.
