Idk why everybody is so surprised. John said in an podcast last year (I believe it was with Shane Told of the podcast Lead Singer Syndrome). John said that he eventually wants to be making music like this. He said he’s very influenced by the Killers, and wants to be as big as them. He’s not as depressed anymore. He’s happy. Let him write the music they want. This song kills either way. Knowing Trophy Eyes, I’m sure there will be a few songs in the record that are heavier.

You point this out and it made me think of a moment at the concert I went to when they were opening for Neck Deep and people keep screaming for them to play a certain song and at one point John goes, "We're gonna play what we want." or something along those lines. It was a pretty cool moment, and one i think also touches on the 'what do they owe?' question.

Regardless of this band's constant style progression, they still kill it time and time again. They have evolved so much since Everything Goes Away (a great era) to these recent singles. Don't be bitter that the band doesn't sound the same, be appreciative that the quality is improving. Long Live Trophy Eyes

Ill still never forget seeing these guys playing gigs in my hometown, in rooms as small as my living room with tickets that costed 10$. Its so sureal to see them grow from something a buzz amongst my mates, to being played on the radio and making it this much. Keep on killing it boys.

They have definitely changed. There’s no doubt. But...something about this is still a trophy eyes sound. It was the same thing with chlorine. It was very different from something like Mend, Move On. But I could tell it was still Trophy Eyes, AND I continue to love what they’re putting out. Super stoked for this new record.

It's amazing how much this guy lyrically puts himself out there. Cold hard truth, where as someone like myself hides it. This song is perfect for people like me, and there are plenty out there. Just like the song says, his writing/their music, gets you through the day. Like they style change or not, the core of the music is still doing the same thing and what music should do, make you feel something. Hats off to these guys.

I like how everyone is saying that they don't like that Trophy Eyes has changed their sound a bit and that they're just doing it for money... but the lyrics in this song and the video itself are explaining that they're just changing their sound because they want to and that they're not "selling out" and not doing this just for money. Some people can really be blind lmao

Yup that is what the song is about, it's not like that makes them immune to criticism though. I 100% agree that the band doesn't owe us anything and I personally LOVE this song, but people still have the right to share their opinions, granted they're not being complete dicks about it.
