Why care about potassium in your saltwater tank?
Potassium’s role in coral biology is not intensely studied. Studies have found varying degrees of K incorporation into coral skeletons, so it is used in coral growth.
Anecdotes about Potassium’s role in blue coral chromoproteins, and therefore the blue color in some corals, are abundant.
Potassium is an important element in all cell life. So that means the microbiome is likely dependent on available potassium.
That microbiome also contains the coral symbionts that might benefit from available potassium and therefore improve the coral's conditions.
That is why you should know what your potassium level is. Some tanks consume much more than others so unverified dosing to a fixed ratio is not advisable.
