Succulents can often become leggy or stretched, growing elongated bare stems. This stretching of the plant stem is usually the result of the plant growing in too little light, but plants becoming leggy can also be caused by age and feeding.
To fix leggy plants we can prune them to encourage shorter and bushier growth. If the succulent has become very leggy then we can use stem cuttings to propagate lots of new plants. In this video I show you how to propagate Aeonium arboreum plants, giving clear step by step instructions how to fix leggy succulents.

I would really love to see this video in Blue Peter style - so at the end you say 'and here is one I did earlier' and show us what it looks like when it grows again from the stem.

Great video and for anyone watching and reading, the Grow Paradise shop is great 👍🏼 I’ve done a few orders the last few months and been really happy with Craig’s service and also the plants he sells. Will 100% be buying more in the future and enjoy being educated from these videos too.

Great information! I have so many of these growing in the yard that were here before I moved in. I have recently started studying succulents to begin to fix my yard and didn't know what to do about THEM because they were so horrible in the Summer but beautiful in the winter and Spring, but I have toooooo many of them in places that I don't want them to be anymore. Now I know how to cut them back and make new ones to give away to friends without the guilt of thinking that I was going to kill them when I cut them.

Ha! Love the "Be brave!" 😂 Thank you so much for explaining the reasoning for folks saying to give it a couple days to callous over! I've heard that forever and it didn't make sense to me. The light bulb has finally gone off! 😁 What a gorgeous plant!! Cheers and a "subscribe" from the US! 😊

Two improvements... 1. If you don't let it scar over and dry up, then you shouldn't water it right when you plant it. You should wait a few days. 2. To remember which way is up or down you should angle the BOTTOM and that way it pokes into the dirt easier

I have heard that pruning your plants help them grow more vigorously. From one stem, multiple new stems will grow out. I have seen it done on Jade plants, which are similar to the Aeoniums.

Hi Craig. Great video. Will be trying this out 👍🏼. But ! It got me thinking about these types of plants in the wild !. Is it that in the wild the long/twiggy stems/branches get busted off by animals or strong winds !! I'm interested now on seeing if a "busted" off cutting would root freely from lying on the surface ! . I have recently planted up around the base of my olive tree with a selection of alpine succulent and was amazed yesterday returning from holiday how little busted off bits have rooted and now creating even more ground cover over this large pot. Your view will be great 👍🏽

Do you treat a Night Blooming Cyrius the same way? I was tying mine up and it broke so I stuck the 2 large pieces into the dirt and one is rotting. Should I let it callous after cutting the rotten part away? It's like 14 inches long and only 3 inches from the base is turning black and soft. Thanks 😊

Hello Craig. What about if the aeonium doesn’t have anymore rosette at is head? Will this section be able to produce roots if the stem is planted in the soil? Thank you very much.
@GrowParadise

Absolutely! So long as the stem is healthy it will root and grow. Just make sure you don't plant it upside down which an easy mistake to make with leafless stems 😁
