Lisa Andersen is one of surfing’s few transcendent stars. 4x world champ and inductee into the Surfer Hall of Fame, she is a true surf icon. But this is not a story about surfing. It’s the story of a woman brave enough to be vulnerable.
Andersen discovered surfing when she was 13, though it was not what her parents wanted. They felt the beach was dangerous. Lisa did nothing to ease their concerns and eventually wound up in juvenile hall. Her father smashed her surfboard, so Lisa hatched an escape plan. She decided to go to Huntington Beach, leaving a note behind that read, “Going to California to become world surfing champion.” She was homeless before being taken in by an abusive local. Unlucky in relationships, she was abused often, and had to runaway time and again.
Especially when she felt trapped. In the water, she was something else, and surfed like a gorgeous disaster. But she could never quite put it all together, until career suicide presented itself. An unexpected pregnancy. Over objections, she decided to have the child and in so doing broke through and became a champ. Trouble follows Lisa on her human journey. Surf is a beautiful backdrop but the real story is the epic poem of her life. It is the story of a self-made, American woman. It is a story of today.

I remember that cover of Surfer magazine with Lisa and it said, "Lisa Andersen surfs better than you." And she did. This was the most absorbing and honest documentary I've seen about a surf champion/personality. She definitely is the style icon. I loved Pam's surfing style wise too but Lisa had that tenacity and unmatched drive. Excellent work, thank you.

Lisa was on fire during the early 90s I had seen a lot of female surfers but Lisa was definitely on another level. Thank you Lisa for sharing your story and showing your vulnerability. I hope it inspires others to have and realize their own dreams.

This was a great documentary and showed how the naturally occurring "drama" of the tour is much more interesting than the manufactured Final 5 format that the @WSL is using today. Or maybe I am just remembering reading all those mid 90s surfing mags and being nostalgic. Nah...😂

What a great film…!! Similar to Lisa, surfing helped me escape either prison or addiction had I stayed in the locale and environment that I had evolved from. We even had a commonality of the alcoholic father. I went on to achieve things in my life that I would have never dreamed of achieving thanks to surfing and what it imparts to ones psyche. Surfing eventually was taken away from me after an accident surfing my home break left me paralyzed underwater, having an out of body experience. While underwater all I could think of was my sixteen month old son at home and knowing that I had to get back there to him. I was helicoptered out and once again had to learn how to walk and do everything over. My goal was to be able to not only walk but to run. I thankfully and gratefully arose like the phoenix due to some unatural desire to overcome obstacles put in my way. I believe that a tremendous amount of this determination came about from being involved in surfing and martial arts prior to becoming injured. After taking twenty years off from practicing martial arts due to my accident I returned to it and achieved my second degree black belt from a place which doesn’t award them easily at all. So I feel really good about that because I know that I’ve earned it. Kudos to Lisa, happiness isn’t easy to find for too many of us. 🤟✌️

I was part of the Daytona Main St. Pier punk crew back then! All the hard core guys respected Lisas surfing! I remember one big choppy day(93 maybe) at the pier, had to have been 8ft. Me and a friend were paddling back out and she did one of her signature power, in the pocket cutbacks, and we looked at each other and were both like, NO WAY! Wish she would have mentioned Frieda Zamba, 7 time womens champ, and from the next town north of Ormond Beach, Flagler Beach. Im sure Frieda was an inspiration. Guys like Rob Fuller, Steve Lawrence, Dwaine Maki are great surfers from that area!!! The Ormond crew ripped back then!!!!

I’ve been saying for years that the surfing world and especially todays woman surfers owe Lisa Anderson more respect and credit than she gets. It’s about time someone did a documentary on her to show the surfing world how great she was for surfing not just woman’s but the entire sport of surfing. She to this day has the best style on a surfboard only one that comes close to her is Bethany Hamiltons style. Both surf like guys and that is the ultimate compliment

@@Dan-cl3md dude you are 100% right I forgot about Steph Gilmore. Absolutely she is in the same category and level of surfing. And is one of my all time favorite surfers. While I’m at it let me throw some fire on it and call out one of my least favorite female surfers of all time Carissa Moore lol can’t stand her and never could. Thanks for bringing Steph up definitely agree on that one!

This is by far, in my opinion, one of the greatest stories in surfing history. My mother Aggie Quigg started this movement to enter women into the realm of high performance surfing, by being the first woman to make it from the top of the point at Malibu all the way through every section on a big day on a Joe Quigg sleak high performance all balsa board with a glassed on fin, to the pier, wave after wave, and open up surfing for the realm of women, for ever after. Lisa took it to the next level of extreme high performance short board surfing, where no other women had gone to that point. And that is where you see women's surfing now. Stephanie Gilmore picked it up where Lisa Anderson established it, and epitomized Lisa's radical style. Now for years you've seen women try to break into that raw perfection of style, and only until recently do you see young women starting to take it to a higher level. But it has been decades since women could go further than Lisa and Stephanie's incredible level of surfing. Congratulations Lisa for your epic career and your beautiful family that you have managed in your amazing lifetime. You are a true hero in all you have done.

I'm so happy she kept her baby and didn't kill her child. Women these days think their career is more important. But she did both. Becoming a mother actually blessed her! When so many women... When so many people today... see parenthood as a burden... it made her stronger. It made her better, being a mother. God blessed her unselfishness.
