Troubleshooting an Engine Noise

I developed a new engine noise after a high speed run on my 2004 Yamaha Grizzly 660. I take you step by step through my process of troubleshooting and how to isolate the cause of the noise, and assess the damage.
I also demonstrate how to use a mechanics stethoscope, check for loose valves, check spark plug color for ignition issues, how to check valve timing, and several other common issues while we looked for the issue.
In our case the problem was piston slap due to excessive wear at the wrist pin. I show the damage caused, and the parts I will need to replace.

Sorry about the dog barking in background. He loved chasing the four-wheeler and would get excited whenever he saw it out.

Thank you for the thorough video and also explanations. I myself currently have the exact same slap on my yamaha tt250. After valve adjustment and cam chain check i still have a slap. Next stop is to check the connecting rod and also specifically the piston slap. Thanks again for the video.

Woow...very informative indeed. I have same clicking noise problem with my motorbike but the difference is that my engine is pretty new. I therefore think it's a timing chain issue.

Nice diagnosis. I had a honda 400ex that my son used to jump some tracks. Hit the bottom of the case on the engine and blew a hole in it. All the oil had came out. Because of the location of the hole, the whole engine had to be taken apart right down to the transmission. I have a short vid of it after it was put back together and I was just testing it. I'm more into motorcycles now

Hi I have a quadzilla rs6 X6 and only when I break with rear breaks my quad makes a noise like something is slipping like engine of drive it's an auto any idea mate

A lot of times valves do tick as well when adjusted its pretty normal. The saying goes ticking valves are happy valves lol. Because it never tick before and when i adjusted them it was a slight tick.

Great video! I was able to learn a lot. Did you ever do the video on adjusting the valves? I'm far from an expert, but own a few ATV's and would like to learn how to adjust the valves.

Awesome video bud you saved me from selling my bike. Just pulled my top end and have the same issue at 260 hours. Not sure if that's common thing for these atvs at those hours but am sure glad it wasn't rod knock. What wheel set up are you running?

Nice! Glad it was helpful. The tires are ITP Mud Lite XL's mounted on some ITP wheels. The tires hook up great in dirt / mud. A little loose in gravel but good enough, but lousy in deep snow.

Sounds like your clutch has come slack mate!! I had the experience on my 150 gy6 scooter thought it was my big end bearing! Case closed

I have had several people mention that. In this case it turned out to be piston slap.

Pretty sure the timing chain tensioner needs to be set every time its installed Needed that on my bayou 220 Having issues with my '97 Kawasaki Prairie 400 4x4 making noise

On this motor the timing chain tensioner is spring loaded. Only needs adjusted (more like backed off to reset) if chain is removed / replaced.

@@liveandletlive2894 Not a totally rookie move, you do have to reset it to a specified amount of teeth out, then manually turn the engine over a few times to let the CCT set itself. When an automatic CCT fails you will not see anything wrong with it, it's the internal spring that has weakened, so it then does not have the strength to automatically adjust as the chain wears down, or when you have reset it.

if there's no smoke to your muffler the block is still ok you need to change the piston and piston ring. and pins

what about the bottom rod bearing ?? im getting a knock only under any acceleration. I stopped running it, Im going to take apart the block to investigate the piston. Picked up a spare engine in parts with a good top end for spare parts.

Yep, rebuilt top end and has been running great for last several years.

Yes, there was very small particles, looked like glitter.

Yes, motor is running great! Wiseco piston kit took care of the slap/tick and seems to have a little more power now too. : ) I should try to make a followup video of how it sounds now.

Yep, I was able to hone out the scoring. This was several years ago and it's still running strong.

ya seems like rod/crank are bad there too. Its a crazy process to do the crank on the 660 and 700 motors tho. Usually more in labour than the motor is worth.
