PSI is: Pounds per square inch a standard unit for measuring pressure and the most common factor used in determining when to backwash or clean a pool filter.
A filter pressure gauge is used to measure a filter's PSI and every filter should be equipped with one.
The most obvious reason for high PSI is that the filter is dirty. Simply cleaning the filter or backwashing it if you have a D.E. Or Sand Filter will usually lower the PSI down to an acceptable range. The clean starting filter PSI will vary from filter to filter, some hover around 10-15 PSI but many cartridge filters start at 20 PSI. The best way to know in your case is to clean the filter and then mark on the gauge the clean PSI for your particular filter.
A general rule of thumb is that if the PSI goes up by 10, if it is at 15 and goes up to 25, then a cleaning or backwashing is due. This is the best way to lower high filter pressure and get the pool circulating again.
After cleaning the filter or backwashing it the filter pressure should drop. If it goes back up within a day or week there could be a few reasons for this. One, the grids or cartridges are worn out and need to be replaced. If you have a Sand Filter the sand could be really dirty and you will need to clean it or replace it. Also, if the pool was recently green or cloudy, the filter could be getting filled up quickly with organic matter. Cleaning the filter again usually will solve the issue. If the D.E. Filter grids have a tear or the top manifold is cracked, the filter pressure can rise rapidly after cleaning.
If you have a Return Side cleaner connected to your pool like a Polaris 360, the PSI may rise while it is connected due to the back pressure created by closing off a return line and by the cleaners connection itself. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about. The pressure may also be higher by as much as 10 PSI when you switch the valves to spa mode. The back pressure created by the spa jets will cause the filter pressure to rise. A water feature may also cause the filter PSI to rise.
So these are the reasons why your pool filter pressure will rise.
If you have low pool filter pressure several things may also cause this. The most common reason is some debris is stuck in the pool impeller, restricting it and causing the pump to pull less water. A suction leak like a worn pump lid o-ring will also cause low filter pressure. A problem with the pump's diffuser can also cause this.
Some obvious causes are also a clogged pool pump basket, a clogged skimmer basket, and low water in the pool. Too much suction at the side port towards a suction side cleaner can also cause lower pool filter pressure. A clogged inlet line can also be the cause of low filter pressure. If you have a variable speed pump and you are running it at or below 1400 RPM, the filter pressure PSI will also read low.
A broken filter gauge can also create a false PSI reading - either too high or too low, so make sure the gauge is in good working order. They are easy to change and it will only take you a couple of minutes to do it.
I mention that a flow gauge like the FlowVis would be a good investment and if you want to get the best idea of your pool's actual flow, I suggest you install one. That way no matter what the PSI on the gauge, you can see from the flow meter how much water is flowing into the pool. This is the best way to monitor your pool's actual flow.

My sand filter shows about 10 psi after backwashing. When it gets to about 13-14 psi it needs to be backwashed again (low flow shuts off pool heater and vacuum doesn't work). This filter is about 25 years old and never had sand changed. Do you think this is the problem?

I have a question somewhat related to this. I just replaced my pump, filter, and plumbing. I went from a 150SQFT filter to a 320 quad; and a 011018 (Pentairs OG VS flagship) to IntelliFlo XF 022056. It definitely drop my pressure, which is good in my case, but I think it also dropped my flow. I used to measure with one of those flow gauges that goes in the check valve (FloVis) and would get some where around 60-65 GPM for 2500RPM. Now I measure GPM on the pump (it's a VSF) and it's only reading 35 GPM, does that seem right? It doesn't make sense, I put on a bigger filter, pump, and plumbing. What am I missing?

At lower RPM or speeds it will pump less water. Perfectly normal for a VS pump.

@SPL I guess I should have clarified that. Both pumps were running at 2500RPM. Other than the equipment the only difference is the fact on the old setup I was measuring with the FloVis 60-65 GPM), the new setup I was measuring with the built in meter on the pump (35 GPM)

Thanks!! I’m having trouble with my UV2 sanitizer and was told to check the pressure. (I just put in new bulbs and ballast). The light comes on for just a second and then goes off. Any ideas? Thanks!!

The bulb might be bad. They last typically 2 years

My sand filter consistently has a high PSI. Even when it is off, the pressure stays around 13. The circulation function works well, but when I try to filter the pressure spikes and there is little to no flow. I have new sand that was backwashed and I have bled the air from everything that I am aware of. I have tapped the pressure gauge, but there is no movement. I have watched the video to learn what else I can do, but I can't keep up with all the different type of filters mentioned. What else should I check?

Just purchased a brand new Hayward pump, filter and heater 9-10 months ago. Basically middle of last summer. Everything is brand new. My first time having a sand filter. I opened it yesterday to start the cleaning process. Today I attempted to turn the heater on and it wouldn’t stay running. Deduced it down to the pump having or holding air, it would only fill completely during prime then slowly had air creep in. Checked my psi gauge and it was pinged all the way around. Turned off and an hour later it was at 60 psi. Any tips?

Find the source of the air leak is number one. Maybe a union needs t be tightened in front or on top of the pump.

I have a large pool about 45'x25 and a spa, but bypassed the dead heater for now. My DE filter is the old tall large grids, 8 of them, sometimes hard to find for a dela, but my PSI goes to about 40-43~psi "regularly", and I just today cleaned the tank and grids and put new DE. I did notice some blank areas on the filter that had no DE. I am recovering from a green pool, its been taking me weeks! And just need to add some Sodium carbonate, as I followed another great video of yours. Cannot get Free Chlor to go up yet. Either way, the filter with new DE is at 40-43PSI, I cant remember if that is normal, as I thought 30PSI was about normal. The spa is flowing over, looks normal or maybe low flow, but at 3450 the pump is max and its been on for weeks, usually 6-12 hours at max. But perhaps something is in my line??? Where to start trouble shooting, I have no idea?!! Any help is greatly appreciated!!

If the flow is good maybe change the gauge and see if that helps. If the grids are more than 3 years old changing them will help.

@@SPL The grids are new. I will try a new gauge. But I really hope its not an obstruction or a pipe collapse. How to test for that? Thank you for reading your comments!!

@@SPL It looks like for some reason the DE is coming back into the spa, and pool, as when I brush I get a puff of poweder in the water come up from the floor to surface. Grids are new, and I inserted them well. My filter I noticed only has the metal rod for the screw that holds down the plastic disc grid holder piece, and there is no tube coming up, and I never saw a spot for such a tube to insert into the bottm...I say this as I see some filters have some air tube leading to the top. Well, do you have a video on How to troublw shoot a pool that is getting DE in the pool, when grids are new and replaced?

Hi Dave my name is Moe and I just started a pool gig. I bought your pool guide and it has been very helpful. I have a question for you. I feel as though I have become I’ll after cleaning a dirty pool that has been neglected for the season. What precautions do you take, if any, when cleaning dirty pools? (Masks, gloves, etc)?
@SPL

Gloves yes. Mask if needed. You might be overly sensitive. It may be the chemicals making you sick.
