Hi Peepaw MacDonald, thanks for this video it is very useful. I have a question and that is. I have got a gamepad which doesn't work properly anymore. Actually when I plug it into power through USB it gives a sign of power but the pc said that the device isn't recognized and it won't work. So that, I have started the PCB troubleshooting and following your instructions I tested the IC which is a very small 32 pins one and with my multimeter I found out five points where I assume is a short, respectively D+ and four digital I/O. With short I mean that the multimeter doesn't show me anything on display. Moreover the IC shows a small brownie spot on the surface pretty close where the short were found. Now I would like to ask you a confirmation of what I told you and if you think I am on the right way or not? Thank you very much in advance!

Hey there, I’m terribly inexperienced with electronics (I’m 17) but I’m trying to learn, so hopefully you’ll see this and have some advice. I tried this with a random circuit board I had with a few ICs. I tried to replicate what you did as best as possible. I put my red probe on the chassis (which was bonded to the IC ground) and put the black probe on all the pins. My voltage drop readings were bizarre... Most of the readings were around .7, but some were as low as .4 volts and some were as high as 1.666 volts... What?! In fact, numerous pins just read infinity (1. ) on the meter, which I didn’t understand. One of the ICs on the radio board tested shorted on an entire side of the IC. (The radio was unable to tune anything, I wonder if that IC was the cause?)

My granddad gave me the HIOKI DT4282 multimeter. And uncle gave me the CEM DT-9889 multimeter. I believed yours (0.00) and mine are all good. But I aimed more using the CEM DT-9889 to troubleshoot faster by using the ATG thermal imaging camera. My little daughter loves playing the CEM.

Maybe you can assist on this.. Do you know how to get, make or mod a high gain/high reception antenna on 2.4GHz camera's transmitter? The TTL transmitter or TTL receiver operated on 2.4GHz. When I opened the cover up I sees a Zig Zag Circuit & I think that's the antenna. I do not see the Ground for that antenna. While many 2.4GHz Antennas have center (hot) & ground (negative). Where would I solder the ground from the antenna to? And how long do I make the antenna for maximum receptions? I would love the WiFi to be up to 500 meters.

Hay Peepaw since you are so good at this I havd a question. I need to find out how to figure out if a eprom or a small memory chip is bad. Can you help with this please? Currently looking at B&K 575. But too expensive. Is there any cheaper way but I not looking to get some cheap tester. I need reliability. I understand the concept of when in doubt, replace. But the chip has been out of production and discontinued. my only source is also not reliable' eBay or Chinese made.

Nyor is right, Peepaw says "put the red lead on ground [pin 10] then go around the other pins with the black lead. I'm a noob too, so I could be wrong but it seems to me like, one should put the black lead on the ground and go around testing the other pins, with the red lead. Correct me if I'm wrong - please give an explanation
@leslieleslie3363 жыл бұрын
heres a really late reply haha, from the datasheet, the diode's positive pin is at the ground pin of the IC. If you test the diode with the multimeter, you must connect the positive side of the multimeter to the positive pin of the diode, in this case, it is the ground pin.
@kennethfriedberg23584 жыл бұрын
what about 40 pins is it the same too??

Great video. Will that test work with the IC in circuit?
@PeepawMcDonald6 жыл бұрын
Hello, and thank you for watching my video. Yes this does work when the IC is soldered onto the circuit board. I have repaired numerous circuit boards with this method of tracking down shorted integrated circuits:) Caution though, on some circuit boards... Sometimes with many IC's soldered to a board, the Vcc to Gnd will appear very low in diode drop. But other than that, yes this works. Thank you very much for watching:)
@PeepawMcDonald6 жыл бұрын
Oh, one more thing. Don't be fooled by logic inputs that are physically connected to ground. They will appear as shorted to ground with your digital multi-meter. But are intentionally connected to that ground. In this case, look for a trace connection to ground.

How do you locate a short on a circuit when let's say a 3-volt line that is feeding to the different parts of the circuit is shorted? Most circuits I encounter doesn't allow me to just break the circuit or isolate the 3-volt line.
@PeepawMcDonald5 жыл бұрын
Hello, I hope you are having a good day. I hate 3Vdc circuits. I worked on one that I had measured 1.5ohms from Vcc to Gnd with my Fluke DMM. Now ask me how you find a short when it normally measures that low. I had another board that was booting up good. And it the good board measured 1.5ohms from Vcc to Gnd. That is insane.
@PeepawMcDonald5 жыл бұрын
I powered up the non booting board. And felt around with my finger and found an TTL IC that was extremely hot as compared to the other IC's. It was so hot that I could not keep my finger on it longer than a half second.
@PeepawMcDonald5 жыл бұрын
I replaced that surface mount device TTL IC. And afterwards, the board booted up good. That shorted IC blistered my finger tip. HaHa. That is hot hot.
@PeepawMcDonald5 жыл бұрын
Another thing that may help. Electrolytic Capacitors and Tantalum Capacitors fail. And when they do, they can cause short circuits. I hope this helps you troubleshoot your circuit.
@PeepawMcDonald5 жыл бұрын
You know what would be neat. If I could inject one electron into the faulty circuit. And it would report back to me the exact location of the short circuit. Oh well... maybe someday... Until that lucky day, it is you and me to find the fault.

question: bought 2 new Philips UAA 1250 IC chips. It will not test as you have shown and I can not find any data sheet on this chip. It is used in a dome light assemble for a car 1992. Any ideas where I can get this data sheet and why will not test as you describe ?
@PeepawMcDonald Жыл бұрын
I also tried and failed to find a datasheet, so that I could answer your question. But you can find ground of the IC if you can find perhaps an electrolytic capacitor that filters the 12Vdc onto the board. I am assuming 12Vdc because you are speaking of a car. Usually the ground side of the filter electrolytic capacitor will be ground of IC's on the board.
@PeepawMcDonald Жыл бұрын
By the way, why do you think the UAA1250 is bad. Is there a hole in the middle of the IC? Do the dome lamps no longer work. I am curious for other peoples troubleshooting stories.
@PeepawMcDonald Жыл бұрын
One more thing. It appears that this is a custom IC manufactured by Philips for Mercedes-Benz. That would explain the lack of datasheet. Thank you very much for stopping by and watching one of my videos. I hope you and your family are having a great day :)
@rioraton Жыл бұрын
@@PeepawMcDonald Yes on both accounts.. there appears to be a hole where or close by the mfg hole. Also, I believe this chip controls the lights when the doors are opened or unlocked then it is suppose to fade out. the dome/map light its self works fined off the two switches above the mirror. when you set the one rocker switch on the left to the left position the lights are suppose to come on when the door opens or is unlocked but does not. However if you set the left rocker switch to the right position both lights come on if you set the right rocker switch to the left position just the left dome/map light comes on if set that switch to the right position the right dome/map light comes on . This is for a 92 500sl mbz it is not big deal but I just want things to work as they were designed to do But at this point I think there is more down side to me fixing this then up side. I did buy 2 new UAA 1250 philips chips and I wanted to test them like you have shown but with out the data sheet / pin out I can not figure the dam thing out your instructions were so clear but i think the ground is in a diff location I got frustrated trying to find that data sheet as this IC is obsolete and I just gave up. That was a great video you made and very well narrated step by step instruction. I would really like to test these new chips I am still searching for some info Thanks for your help and video

@Peepaw McDonald, never claimed that you didn't know how to troubleshoot. Just that you know very little about camera, video & camera angle. Take for example 5:35 (you could have zoomed it in on the chip, if you were a teaching people or showing the viewer), because if you don't many have no ideal what you are doing. So again, the chip respect to the viewing screen. VERY, VERY SMALL. Ask your wife or someone learning, they can't learn because you DID NOT presented the video well.
