When the Formula D first came out, it was one of, if not the first, radio with a digital synthesizer. My friend was a technician and was amazed! He wrote his own schematic of the system and figured out how to get extra channels. But the way it works, the receiver and transmitter are not on exactly the same frequency and the further you go out of band, the bigger the difference becomes. So, although it only requires switches to get those extra channels, eventually the transmit and receive are so far apart that it becomes unusable. Anyway he modified a ton of them and he had to use tiny wires and covered it with black glue to keep others from stealing his work! He built one for himself that included a 100 watt linear amplifier inside of the case. He made a custom heat sink with an over temp light. He took out the channel selector and just put in switches. A guy offered him $400 for it, so he sold it. Eventually the schematics for the synthesizer came out. It’s an historically important radio.

Blue painters tape, what a great tool for stuff above and beyond just painting!

Just as if not more handy than duck tape.

Mike, Glad the problem was easy to find and repair. Will keep an eye out for that video on PLL circuit. :-)

Thanks for sharing. Nice troubleshooting. A video on how the PLL works would be cool. I have breadboarded the 4046, of course, but a breakdown would be very interesting. Thanks.

I wish I had some of your knowledge. I have a Uniden PRO-710e base with no transmit/no receive. I only have basic tools...multimeter...capacitor ESR tester, transistor tester....no scopes or anything. Is there a way to test the PLL chip with basic stuff to see if the PLL chip is bad? I know some volts on the PLL prongs aren't correct, but not sure what is causing it.

Have seen a lot of those poly-dip caps split open. Always in used gear so I assumed the heat got to them. Seems from this radio they just self destruct. Interesting.

Yeah it appears to just be old age setting in.

Could be the same issue my formula D is having No receive or tx. It died about 10 years ago.
