Driving around part of Trowbridge in Wiltshire on Wed 28th August 1991. The music is by Ian K Clark and is called "Landing on Distant Stars" and is available from iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music and all reputable online music outlets. Thanks Ian. NB.- There's a typo on the opening credits (Trowbridgw) - SORRY!
EXTRA for 2021 - KZfaqr "Gskitz Industries" has cleverly recreated the same journey 30 years later using split screen. View it here • Trowbridge in 1991 vs ... A big thanks to him for taking the time and trouble.

You should think about a split screen version of the same journey. A then and now version. Might give others a better idea of where things are at, and just how much change has happened in 24 years.

Amazing video, thanks for sharing. Had forgotten a lot of what Trowbridge was like back then. The white Ford Cortina at the end of the video REG No. VAC586X was scrapped in Sept 1993.

Thank you so much, I was 11 when this video was filmed, literally brought back the sights and the smells from my formative years, the hops, from ushers and of sausage and pork pies from bowyers! Loved seeing PeeWee’s real ale bar too!

Fascinating ! We were camping in the Lake Ditsrict that week, so were definitely not on camera ! The Esso garage and used car dealers forecourt in Bradley Road have gone, and so has the Ushers brewery. The new Sainsburys site used to be the Ushers bottling plant and distribution depot. The main (new) Tescos site was waste ground then (old Tesco was behind the Civic Hall, where the multiplex is now). The Peter Black's site was still in use in 1991 - it later moved to the White Horse Business Park (the town site is still derelict !). The Tescos Metro site on the Devizes Road roundabout was also waste ground. In 1991, the White Horse Biz Park was largely devoid of many big trees, and vegetation, and the Platinum Garages compex was still a farm !

Excellent video, I'd love to see one from 1976 when I started work at Airsprung. Amazing to remember that the Elephant & Castle was still there in 1991, along with the Mobil petrol Station on Mortimer Street and the Carpenters Arms pub in Roundstone Street was still called The Roundstone. I hope someone does do the split screen version and takes it further into the future too... Thanks shippy555

Brilliant, great footage. Can’t believe there were still so many Ford Cortinas around in 1991! 😂 I live in Trowbridge now but didn’t at that time, and this was around about the last time I went to watch a match at Trowbridge Town FC’s old Frome Road ground. I seem to remember going down the side of The Ship pub to get to the ground, but can’t figure out how the roads were laid out, with the new houses there now - County Way didn’t go all the way up to Bradley Road then?? Any pics or memories welcome!

Hi Jason, thanks for your comment. You're right to say that there was a lane by the Ship, it is now Ashleigh Grove. There was a lane that went from the top of Mortimer Street (crossing Newtown and the now very short end of Dursley Road) by the side of the stone masons and still exists! That lane led all the way up to Bradley Road and a short part of it is till there till you get to County Way. Today is the right hand pavement (going up towards Bradley Rd) and crosses the lane (now Ashleigh Grove). I did video that during the times that my other County Way videos were done. But I notice I have never included the top (Bradley Rd) end on any of them. I will dig them out over the next few days and put them on. When I have,I will let you know. Glad you jogged my memory about it.Thanks. D.S.

I was born in 2001, I am intrigued by how much the place has changed from my parents living there to myself living there. What was the factory where Salisbury is now and what did it do/make?
@shippy555
@shippy555 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph, I assume you mean "Sainsbury's" (Salisbury). It was Usher's brewery and they made beer. They were in quite a few sites around Trowbridge. Duke St, Union St (where those new houses are, both sides, hence Brewery Walk) There was a bridge/conveyor belt going from about where Sainsbury cafe is to the corner of where the funeral directors/flower shop as all that area including Back St, Manvers St and down the Wicker Hill part of Fore St, which was where all the offices were (The Parade) The bridge carried beer barrels, I believe. If you freeze the video at 4:10 you'll just about see the bridge/convey0r at the very top of the screen. Thanks for your comment and watching.

Could you please tell us (or anybody else) what streets are on the video, the beginning only, the first two or three roads so that we can follow on a map. I'm french and was in trowbridge in 1987 and 1988 in july, my parents sent me there to improve my english. I was following english courses at the civic hall with many others french teenagers and we were living in a family, mine was located at Frome Road. The civic hall near the park and tennis court. So i'm glad to see a video like yours of that time but we miss some info about the roads to be able to follow your journey.

@@shippy555 Wow small world... I visited your studio probably in 1985 with an (at the time) friend Richard Willink - But he later ripped me off and probably did you too (though RIP). I heard a CD being played for the first time in your house which blew me away, and ultimatel;y you inspired me to sound proof my first studio with egg boxes lol - God they're a nightmare to make good the walls afterwards huh? Nice to have met you - I've now moved to Hampshire and am revisiting music again after a 20 year break. All the best.

@@J4Z666 Hi again Jase, I remember Richard coming with a few "friends" at different times and I remember one friend recording a song called something like "American Dream" but thought his name was Ben something!! Was that you? I'm sure not. Is your full name Jason? You may not want to tell me as these comment sections aren't private, of course. Yes, I have had a few dodgy non-paying times with Richard, but generally, he was fine. He once paid me (as he was skint.....again!) with a nice ,old, expensive looking violin! Turned out to be a very rare violin that was worth a fortune! (not quite a Stradivarius) that belonged to his mum! She's had it since she was a child. I had to give it back after his brother came to see me and he paid for Richard's tab! You said RIP, has Richard died? I didn't know, if he has, what did he die of and how long ago? I don't remember the cd playing experience, I know I had bought a cd player when they were fairly new and very expensive. I paid £250 for my first one, probably more like £600 in today's value. I was upstairs for the first 2 thirds of 1985 and had a studio built on land downstairs which was ready by about September that year. I'm assuming you probably went upstairs ( because you mention the egg boxes. as I didn't use them again downstairs)? Sorry, all these questions!! I'm sure it was good to have met you, I don't ever remember Richard turning up with anyone I didn't like! Good Luck with your revisiting music again, which I can only assume is computer based? I still have a bit of a set-up which is based around a Yamaha AW4416 (DAW).I bought it in 2001 for £3000 and recently bought a second (back up) for £250, which is around the going rate on ebay! Lovely machine though. As I said, good luck, and you take care too.

@@shippy555 Nice to chat with you Shippy - I do remember your name btw just being respectful of your privacy. Yes I'm Jason, the studio was upstairs and I didn't record anything I was young then and had only just caught the music bug, recording in my bedroom with an Amiga 500, midi interface and a couple of synths (This grew in to something much bigger by the time I left parental home 10 years later). Richard passed about 20 years ago (I think) but I'm going to see my folks at the weekend and I'll ask them when as I have a seriously volatile memory, I'll update you later on that one and how. Yes I'm recording on PC / Cubase Pro with only a few outboard toys - not got the room anymore - life and kids got in the way. I’ve been working on an album for about 6 months but it’s a big learning curve using latest Cubase and software instruments, effects and stuff, the one thing I really love is I save my project and everything is saved and can be recalled without having to find the settings on all of my synths and mixer channels no matter what I was working on last. Got no idea what I’m doing with the album when it’s done yet but it’s fun getting there. Just looked up the Yamaha - they look neat, bit smaller than a full size analogue mixer and must be bliss recording to disk, can you arrange and sequence on that thing? If only I had one of them 20 years ago, equally if only I had Cubase 12 20 years ago. Have you produced your own music or just sound engineer to others? Never really got to know if you were / are a musician / producer that took the opportunity to sell the studio time to others as well or were purely in to the recording. - All the best J

Great stuff! I was born in Trowbridge in 1947 and brought up there during the 50s and early 60s when we moved out into the Wilts countryside! So this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5-gnKtmtKvMk2w.html is more my era! I believe this video starts in Bradley Road, after the entrance to Carlton Row which leads into The Croft, where we lived. My Dad owned and ran the shoe shop in Silver Street (Ashplant & Son). Fond memories of growing up in what was a bustling market town. Oh yes, Wednesday was market day and half day closing, I think. Cattle were herded and sold in the market then. I used to go into Bath to school on the train, often hauled by steam locos. I had a cine camera but took little of Trowbridge, more's the pity. Who remembers the businesses in the old cloth mills? There was a bread factory (bakery I suppose) that caught fire (smell of burnt toast) but I can't remember the name. HELP!! Also Airpsrung Mattresses before they moved to a modern facility, and, I think, Modeluxe Laundry. Any others, please? Nostalgia isn't what it used to be!
