While out riding my TRS 300 RR trials bike developed a misfire and eventually refused to start.
we pulled it into the workshop to try and diagnose the Issue.

All honest bike problem solving vids are good to watch. Gearbox oil level check? Is the front axle tight? Cdi prone to water ingress(are you pressure washing?) at the main pin connection use dielectric grease round to keep water out and is their an electrical pin near/ on the carb corroded? Clean and treat same. Talking of main bearings you've gone through two sets already but original big end and piston??? (rings and small end you don't mention) That's odd unless crank is balanced poorly, (woodruff key issue causing rotor oscillation?)l would also research better quality bearings. Long comment but you ask for 'em😁

I love your honest comments mate they keep me in check. I've had two CDIs now and none have water ingress as they do have a very nice seal just inside the plug. the first one was a kill button failure fault and the second is a misfire with spark failure. Connors bike doesn't have a fault but does have some corrosion on the pins. however his seal falls out when you remove the plug., Axle is tight the issue is definitely the bearings as I can hear them rumbling too. The mains have been changed twice but the piston, rings and big / little end are all original as they were within spec and no play or noises. also they were changed before the woodruff key problem. I always use quality bearings like FAG or NSK but I'm going to use whatever TRS are selling this time to cover all bases. Thanks again for your comments buddy, appreciated and welcomed.

@@SpecialisedMotorcycleTransport Thanks for reply, TRS do seem to produce the odd 'Friday afternoon' bike amidst many reported happy customers. Your main premature failures are interesting as the bearings that have remained in spec have to resist more dynamic forces than the mains and the heat soak from the piston. Your oil therefore seems to be doing a sterling job. Is it as smoother engine as your lads? although capacity is different so comparison is difficult. Crank imbalance is my favorite culprit. However google 'late model Beta main bearing failure'

I was brought up with Trials bikes as well my dad was a bike nut and i was named after Rollie Free the vincent land speed record guy in a swimsuit and Barry Sheen was and still is a hero of mine 🙂🙂

Yes my prediction is Rings at the very least and most likely a piston. But other than the mains it sounds like a very healthy engine. 😁

you can test a CDI with a multimeter. Place the black multimeter lead on one of the terminals on the CDI box. Touch the red multimeter lead to each of the other terminals on the CDI box, one at a time. If the multimeter reading changes when you touch the red lead to different terminals, then the CDI box is functioning properly.

There are at least 20 terminals on this cdi unit. It controls alsorts almost like an ecu. 🤔😁

looks like you have the same issue I have with the 2019 RR , The Exhaust tip keeps making its way out of the exhaust , Bit of Blue silicon fixed the issue for me after repacking , also sealed the Airbox from the inside with silicon , seems to not get as much dirt and water in now , I have heard of people drilling out the port holes in the rear swing arm to allow more clearance for Schmutz after rivers etc ,, love to see more Trials Bike Maintenance

Yes my sons 19 bike has the same issue. I think it's very common and for the price of a new cap it can stay exactly as it. 😂

It's meant to be half a thumbnails width between the tensioner and swing arm but my thumbs are massive so I use my little finger. 😂

I love watching the trial bike stuff. Would love to see you rebuild it. However I am wondering why a 2018 bike that doesn’t go fast ,needs so many crank bearings and has so many issues? Please explain….? I always use SKF bearings and seals…as the cheap Chinese shit don’t last 5 minutes ….worth it in the long run mate.🏁

This will be the third mains change, the last time I used NSK open case which are very good bearings. I wish I knew why they kept getting damaged I just have no idea. But the engineering on trials bikes is bias toward weight saving not longevity and with them getting such a hard life they do break quite often.

First guess from the video title was CDI. Never had a problem with mine yet, but I ordered a spare, IMO the number of failures I see with these is unacceptable. Those years of TRS used crank bearings lubed by the transmission oil, did you ensure the oil holes were lined up when installed? They now use sealed bearings, which sounds scary, but I haven't heard of any of them failing yet, so that's good I guess.

This one has mains in the crank case not the gearbox. Yes I rang Saunders after the second set failed and he told me about the fully sealed bearings.. Not sure how I feel about that but I think at this stage I need to use them. I guess the oil galleries will just sit full of premix? 🤔

@@SpecialisedMotorcycleTransport The mains are in the crankcase of course, but they're oiled with transmission oil, there's a hole in the side of the bearing that lines up with a hole in the case so oil can flow, if that wasn't done that would explain the failure. Jim Snell covers it in his TRS engine video. I don't think the new sealed bearings fit in the old case.

I could be mistaken on the year, yours might have the newer ones, TRS can be confusing with the changes as different models get the changes over different years.

@@PNW_Trials_Adventures I have stripped this motor before and I'm positive the bearings aren't supplied with oil from the gearbox mate. there's a gallery that runs down the back of the bearing feeding premix into it. Maybe you're talking about an older model than mine I'm not sure buddy.

For gaskets, seals and bearings it'd cost around £100 for parts but the expense comes with the (while we're in there) parts like pistons, rings barrel replating etc.. That's when it starts to be expensive.

2 new leavers needed can't ride with them bent like that. Noticed your grinding all over your bike.that oil leak needs sorting before riding.front mudguard looks not right .sticking out at the bottom. Just an observation. First time watching.tidy your workshop

Chris I honestly am not concerned with anything cosmetic on the bike. For me trials is about the riding and if I have a shiny new bike I'm more afraid to throw it on the floor.. All my bikes are ridden hard and put away wet so things like bent levers I don't bother with unless they snap off.. These have already been bent back straight once and they won't straighten again so they'll be changed when I crash and snap them off. The oil leak is very slight and the mains will be changed soon anyway so I can live with that for the time being. Thanks for the comment buddy.
