Washington DC has experienced the most intense gentrification process in the country, and after decades of urban planning, thousands of the city’s Black residents have been forced out the communities they have lived in for generations. Für jeden der wegen Abibox hier ist paar pros and cons: Pros: -it improves property values -higher taxes -> local officials have more money to provide better schools/other city improvements -it draws in new businesses -> new shops/restaurants -> new jobs -can create/encourage a more sustainable way of life -cleaner neighborhood cause more cleaning services - new activities and events Cons: -people cannot afford to live there anymore -loss of social diversity -people are displaced to nearest poor area/increases homelessness -increasing cost of living makes it more difficult for the people who stayed -making the rich people richer and the poor people poorer

I've lived in DC for decades and blacks will never pool their money. The truth is young Blacks in DC are too rude and self hating towards each other to work together. I've noticed a lot of hard stares Blacks give each other in DC.

Against All Odds That’s what white people said...”we want our cities back” and now most major cities that were historically white (but became temporarily black since the 1960’s) and created by whites are being gentrified by whites to get their cities back. It’s a fact all the major cities in the USA were created by whites and were inhabited by them until the replacement of them by incoming black populations.

Black Group Economics, Black ownership. We must own our neighborhoods so that other people cant move us. We need Economic Power. All the Grocery Stores , Gas Stations, Real Estate Housing and Buildings, Cleaners, Restaurants, Banks, Clothing Stores should be Black owned. That's Black Power

@RoadKillzine even if crime and violence stops, that boost the Cost of Living. Virginia used to have a body count of 5 or six a year at the max compared to DC, so because of it, more residents and stores were built., which took their Cost of Living up. A house in Northern VA that looks like a house in DC is now worth about 1.2 mil 🤷‍♂️

You did a good job of telling one side of the story, I just wished you’d told both sides. Countless other people, including black folk, have seen their own property values spike into the millions because of gentrification. Some have even traded their million dollar DC, Philly & NYC brownstones for new $300K homes in NC, FL & TX, and now enjoy huge retirement accounts. You should have asked your guests about that. You have no idea, people knocking on your door every day trying to get you to sell, calling police for anything, trying to get code enforcement on you. A lot of tricks they play. A lot of people don't want to leave, but can't deal with the harrassment.

Daniel Whaley I’m not saying there aren’t cases of harassment or places where harassment happened. I’m just saying the video ought to tell the other side. Those people I described who sold old brownstones for $1M and now live in brand new beautiful $300,000 houses in Texas with $700,000 in cash *exist*, and their stories matter too. Tell both sides.

5:05 genocide? Dude, you're not getting killed for being Black or forcefully relocated against your will. The way gentrification works in DC is that the prices of your neighborhoods skyrocket and if you can no longer afford the new price threshold, than you're forced to be evicted and move out elsewhere. And before any of y'all come at me, I've been living in DC since I was born. This is as much of my city as it is to yours. Did all my primary and secondary education here. You wanna talk about genocide and true gentrification? Go read Turkish history during World War I, specifically 1915 period. Then you'll understand true genocide and true gentrification.

As a fifth generation Washingtonian, I like what is happening. Neighborhoods change all the time for ALL colors. I grew up in far SE in for lack of a better word '"an historical white neighborhood" . It has changed for better or worse .. depends on who you talk to. Areas change ..... These areas that you show on the videos are not areas everyone can afford to live in. I can"t. I have to say they are cleaner and safer than they have ever been

Thank God it's changed. I've been in DC 4 decades and I can tell you it is much better. What is not talked about is the lost generation of chocolate city. You have grandparents who were successful, bought homes, but along the way the next generation screwed up. The biggest problem with the city is NOT gentrification. The biggest problem in DC and a story being played out across the country is teen pregnancy. As long as children keep having children and more children and do not know how to raise them we are lost. Public schools cannot raise children. You have to have a loving home with discipline.

This was very good reporting. I wish someone would do investigative reporting on displacement caused by gentrification currently happening in ward 7 and ward 8. Are there any policies that stop displacement while allowing beneficial community investment

Born in ward 7, came up in ward 8. Well, basically I call the people that are being "removed " or kicked out "the leftovers." Those are the ones that said Gentrification or black people are getting kicked out, because the dont know how to play the game or decided to be lazy to the point they wont play at all. There is free school in DC. 50% percent of the residents dont know or dont care. Those that care, did get put on the back burner, because the program started out for convicted felons that came home before the Obama administration came in, or Atleast that what we were told. After the Felons, were taken care, it became "free school for DC residents" but you had to find out on your own. DC Government still hasn't spoken on it. Some people loiter in front of the buildings where you register for free school and training and still don't know what's going on.🤷‍♂️

I remember soon after Reagen had became President he cut mostly everything he could with no Remorse not even considering the Black Youths and suddenly nowadays the city Parks and School Playgrounds are getting Fixed Up and looking completely Brand New now that Caucasians and Mexicans are Moving Into the Neighborhood ! Throughout the 80's and 90's most of these Parks were Empty because either it was too dangerous or simply there was no Activities for the Black Youths throughout the Community !

I love my city I grew up on 17th and East Capital SE across from Eastern High School, I remember the ushers at the Redskins games use to let us in to watch the games for free , block Parties, gramma was the bootlegger she showed me how to hustle those were the days

I grew up in Washington DC from 1963 - 1980 and 1986-1993.. I witnessed first hand the raise and fall of "Chocolate City" that was 1973-1979!! Those were the days!!! The DC today is nothing like "Chocolate City" of the 70s, my own neighborhood in Northeast has gone from 99.99% Chocolate to 70% White, Latino and Other! I think there is only one family left from the 70s on the street where I used to live! My father hung in there until four years ago when he passed away! I came home back then and drove around the city and visited my old High School! I really had tears in my heart as I recalled how things used to be because those days are Gone with the Wind!

I still can't figure out what the anti-gentrification people think can happen. If the area becomes more desirable, people with more options will move in. The demand for the the housing and commercial space will rise. That is the definition of "more desirable". As demand rises, price rises. That is the law of supply and demand. The price could stay low if supply was raised, but that means displacement of those already living there also, in order to create more units out of the fixed supply of dirt.

It's very simple, Native American Blacks need to stop spending money on things that don't matter and start sacrificing so that we can can own property. Also we have to be happy and content with living around each other. I tried to share this with friends back in the 90's hardly anyone listened and now all of the predominantly black neighborhoods in Oakland, Berkeley and Richmond have been gentrified. At the end of the day we only have ourselves to blame.

Why do black people want to segregate themselves into all black communities when no other racial group does this in the same way. I understand the deeply rooted and tragic history behind segregation and Its sad when people lose their homes, but you do not have a right to land unless you own it. Gentrification is not facilitated by the government its facilitated by realesate markets. DC is now a melting pot of ethnicities and so is NYC

@Complex Ez New Mexico, Alaska, Maine* these are remote places where no one wants to move to.. DC is a hot bed economy and the capital of the nation. "They pass laws to make it so" got any evidence of this? They absolutely can't because any law of that kind is breaking federal law, and in 2019 it would be a public field day if they broke the Civil rights Act

Wait! Not so fast. It's true that Blacks and other groups want to segregate themselves. Why can't we repeal all this silly civil rights stuff and make it so legally? [sarcasm] Shouldn't whites be allowed to keep stuff to themself too? [More serious tone:] Of course we discriminate today. By wealth or income. In my (White) opinion, the end of legal segregation had some bad side effects. Among others, abolished what used to be segregated but STABLE and relatively CRIME-FREE white and Black neighborhoods.

Rambling? Incoherent? OK I will try to be clearer: It is natural for like-minded people to form groups. When done voluntarily, this is called" freedom of association." This is quite different from Jim Crow which required segregation in many areas. I am a White conservative. Therefore I am giving the opinion (which you do not have to accept, and you are free to call me a racist) that for the most part, civil rights has done more damage than good to the USA, certainly to whites. I believe that Blacks were harmed too, in the sense that (enforced) neighborhoods were destroyed. When racial restrictions were lifted, many better-off Blacks who could leave old neighborhoods fled. The poorer Blacks left behind, absent whatever stabilizing forces the "better" blacks had offered, quickly deteriorated into the mess we have today. If you don't accept my above arguments, I invite you to check statistics. Compare (say) 1945 and 2015. Out-of-wedlock births, welfare dependency, violent crime, are all way worse than they were in the bad old days of segregation. As long as I'm going to get banned, I may as well make it worth my while [grin]. And yes, perhaps some rambling. In my perhaps biased opinion, cities like DC that are gentrifying are chasing an illusion. These shiny new areas are priced as if a mythical "White-opia" of the 1940s had returned. Look at the absurd asking prices and rents. You would think that all violent crime had vanished, that the public schools had the discipline and academic excellence they had three generations ago and that communities banded together. Nothing could be further from the truth. Maybe DC will have 24-hour police protection in the "good" areas. Maybe you won't need an armed guard to get you from your front door to the corner Starbucks or Whole Foods, or to accompany you on the Metro. The only people profiting in this deal are the real estate interests who flip the properties and the local government that hopes for increased revenue. But the new residents and businesses? I fear they discount the continuing risk to person and property from the crime endemic in the big city.

I think sometimes change might be good, but not when you are forced out of your neighbourhood just because of your financial status or your skin colour... People should only move away from somewhere when they want it themselves, not when other, richer people want them to.
