Күн бұрынJoin us on another backpacking trip in New Mexico’s Pecos Wilderness. We are hiking 22 miles of the pristine Sangre de Cristo Mountains, camping at emerald alpine lakes, and summiting one of New Mexico’s highest peaks: Truchas.

Drone Disclaimer: all drone footage was taken legally outside wilderness area boundaries. I will sometimes take creative liberties to add drone footage throughout the video for shot diversity, but all footage was captured legally.

Took yearly trips up to Pecos wilderness on horseback. Best memories of my life are up in those mountains and trails. Our horses and bodies have gotten too old to go anymore but this video gave me great feeling thanks. Surprised you didn’t see any big horn sheep. They were always all over the trail riders wall/ skyline trial and Truchas lakes.

@@creskeybell amazing! Yea the Pecos is a special place. I’ve been coming back to the area for a few years now and it’s a place I’ve really grown to love. Heading back next week actually! So should have another video coming soon. We saw a lot of big horn sheep but I just didn’t have a camera with me that could capture them well. So this time I do and I’m hoping to run into more! Beautifully filmed and edited! This is my backyard...I ski these peaks...nary a soul around except for the bighorn! 🐏 😅 🏔️

My grandson’s go pack packing every year with their dad in the Gila Wilderness in Southern New Mexico. They have been doing this every summer since they were little. But this year my oldest grandson is doing it completely alone for a week which is how long it takes from one end of the trail to the other. He is 17 now. He will check in with the garmen every night and morning

I live down in Southern New Mexico but my boyfriend and I hiked up part of that mountain back in 2004. There was a movie made up in that town called the Mango Bean Wars. We watched it after we got back home

You guys should get one of those lightweight DJI mini drones. They weigh 0.5 lbs and film in 4k. You could get some crazy peak shots with that.

@@shaan702 I actually do have one! They are super cool. It’s just you are only allowed to fly them in certain areas and designated Wilderness Areas are off limits. Most of this trip took place in a Wilderness Area so I just wasn’t able to fly it. It would be cool to get some shots on those peaks though!

Great Video, I'm from the town of Truchas . My friends and I would go backpacking in the peaks during the summer. Have lived in Texas for over 30 years now, how I miss the beauty of the Truchas Peaks and Northern New Mexico.

Awesome video. I first climbed South Truchas Peak in 1977. Climbed it 3 more times over the years. Haven’t ever done that ridge though. Looks fun. I did pass by Truchas Lakes one Memorial Day. That slope you came down was a big wet slab avalanche that sheered off huge trees. I guess since it had already slid it would have been safe but we didn’t risk an ascent. I’ve always gone in from the south, Jack’s Creek or Irongate so nice to see from the north. If you want to do something else cool in NM, start at Cabresto Lake in the Latir Peak Wilderness. Hike up to Heart Lake and up onto Latir Mesa and the hike over to the Bull Creek Trail and back to Cabresto Lake. There are several 12ers besides Latir Mesa that can be done in a day. Long day but doable. Venado is just off trail and worth it. I call the Latirs a mini-Pecos with less people.

@@barryraven4745 thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Wow that’s crazy. Incredible how the landscape changes with all that. I would have never realized there had been an avalanche. But I bet it would have been super unstable after that. The ridge was cool. Really pretty views. But seeing the trail coming up from the south from the top made me want to do that too! That whole area is just so petty everywhere you look. Sweet! I’m so glad you recommended the Latir Peak Wilderness! I was literally looking over maps about 2 weeks ago looking for more spots to explore in northern New Mexico and Latir Peak immoderately caught my attention. Looks like an incredible spot. So now with the recommendation I’ll definitely be going! Here in a couple weeks I’m taking some friends up to Trampas Lakes, but already thinking about early next year I might try to do Latir then. Thanks!

@@Beyond_The_Treeline One other amazing place in New Mexico is Valle Vidal. You can camp there and hike up Little Costilla. Not really backpacking but a wonderful beautiful place to camp and hike. Not sure if you could get permission but Big Costilla is huge mountain in that same area. Private property unfortunately. One other note, a passenger car would not be a good idea on the two mile road to Cabresto Lake.

Did truchas peak with a colleague from LANL on a one-day hike to the top. This is where I learned the hard lesson of not using sneakers with basketball shorts when hiking NM. It was a hard hike.

@@samuelpetrovich4998 yea absolutely! We started from the Santa Barbara Trailhead and hiked in on the West Fork of the Rio Santa Barbara Trail. That meets up with the Skyline Trail that took us to Truchas Lakes and Truchas Peak.
