I'm sorry, you clearly don't know much about their sales if you think this is correct. Engine sales of the Dd15 is approximately the same as the X15. This video showed Cummins as 41% vs 14 % Freightliner/Detroit. That's just wrong.

Asset managers (i.e. Vanguard, BlackRock, etc) group investments into sectors. For instance - Energy - Transportation - Real Estate etc. They then offer groupings of multiple companies in that sector to investors. It is done so to limit exposure to just one company, but instead places faith in the sector as a whole. Vanguard and the like are a representation of: institutional investors, 401k contributions or individual investors. Engineering more efficient engines and bringing them to market for profit is harder than making a cell phone battery, I can only assume. But it certainly isn’t asset managers pulling the strings. There’s so much that can be unpacked here, but I hope this sheds some light on what you are actually seeing when you look at the “main shareholders”. If you have a 401k, chances are, that’s your investment dollars at work and not the man behind the curtain. I love the truck videos. Keep em coming!

When you own a stock you own a share of the company. You have voting rights and have a voice on what direction to move company towards. You can select members on the board that oversees and influence the CEO of the giant corporation. They don't buy majority of shares to do nothing but watch price of stock grow. When you own 51% of a corporation you become the owner of that corporation and can make or change rules to your will.

I'm an engineer for Cummins and it's very difficult to make a more fuel efficient engine. The customer decides what we sell, not the shareholders. I can assure you the customers want fuel economy and reliability, not what this video was hypothesizing that the oil companies decide what is done. Believe it or not, worldwide fuel economy and emissions requirements drive a lot of the innovation on efficiency.

There seems to be a misconception of 'owners'. These institutional investors own shares, and can influence board makeup. This isn't Vanguard calling up Cummins to tell them to keep the MPG down, so Chevron can make more money. The executive group at each company is charged with increasing shareholder wealth. They will sell a truck that complies with federal standards, and appeals to the most consumers. If more MPG appeals, that is what they will build. If consumers want less MPG, but more creature comforts, or reliability, then that is what they will sell. This video also compares battery advancements to MPG. These two technologies are in vastly different phases of their lifecycle. Diesel engine efficiency also grew by leaps and bounds when it was a less mature technology. I get what you're going for, just not a great analogy. It is like, 'we landed someone on the moon, but we can't...' Landing someone on the moon rarely has anything to do with whatever you're comparing it to.

@@justanothertrucker7856 There are a bunch of advancements in nuclear going on that are making small-form factor reactors potentially viable in the near future. While the current scale of these are as large as a semi-trailer and thus not ready to serve as a power source for a tractor, there are definitely efforts to make these even smaller and potentially a good source for power (steam/electric). I also read a couple of weeks ago that there are remarkable efforts on the fusion front that are producing legitimate (but still quite limited) chain reactions - i.e. viable fusion power. Possibly we will see these start to show up for larger vehicles soon - it seems very feasible even with the current technology to replace diesel engines on large container ships with smaller, cleaner, and more economic nuclear units similar to those used for modern submarines, and possibly locomotives. I don't think we'll have nuclear trucks all that soon, but if they can keep shrinking the reactors at the rate they are, and if they can stabilize the fusion reactions we may not be too far off. But then these groups so heavily invested in the diesel economy are going to have to diversify or figure out how to make money off a relatively inexhaustible fuel supply.

Hang on... A lot of things need to be corrected. I'm an engineer who works on these engines every day and works for one of these companies. Cummins and Detroit (Freightliner- owned by Diamler) have all of the incentive to make a more fuel efficient engine. The end customer drives demand and they pick which engine they want. Fuel economy is a huge reason why they will buy one engine over another. Big fleets can see differences as small as 1%. The competition is super fierce on fuel economy. So don't think Chevron or the stock holders are swaying the decision... Else either one of those companies would go bankrupt very quick elsewise...and these companies make huge amounts of money on these semi engines, so they want the most market share. Number two... Engines have been getting more fuel efficient. Trucks 20-30 years ago we're not getting 6-10 mpg like they are today. They were more in the 4-6 mpg range. That's a huge difference. No truck will ever get 20 mpg because of the rolling resistance on 80,000 lbs and the air drag on a huge box trailer. If engines weren't getting more fuel efficient, they wouldn't be able to meet the CO2 emissions regulations that keep getting more strict worldwide. C02 emissions are directly related the efficiency.

You're happy for the 4 mph gain in the last 40 years, that's not because of your air to piston mixture design, it's because of the new electronics engines where converted to. Ronan my jaw dropped when you said this was new information to you. Seriously man this is how capitalism works. If you dig deeper you’ll find that those same cooperations that are invested in this way are invested in everything. These guys aren’t backing the horse they think will win the race, there buying the race itself. It’s an inevitable outcome of capitalism, investment companies seek to protect there investment t so it makes sense to have smaller investments spread across an industry than a few larger ones betting on one or two companies, that’s much more risky. These companies are using the exact same investment strategy that you preach to drivers. Spread your investments, don’t put it all in one place. Try to safeguard your money. They are doing exactly the same thing just on a much bigger scale The days of finding a company that’ll change an industry an revolutionise it, investing in it, taking the risk. Then making a fortune when that company succeeds are long, long gone for the big players Welcome to capitalism, it’s working EXACTLY as planned Love to all at ET

Diesel Electirc Hybrid engines will be the future of trucking without a doubt, and will triple fuel economy. That being said, once glass batteries hit the market, fully electric trucks will slowly take over; beginning with more local routes. Once the cost to build charging stations drops, and charging speed increases, they'll begin to enter the OTR market. Within 10-15 years, diesel trucks will be a thing of the past and if OTR isn't phased out by that point (a lot of companies are dropping OTR for obvious reasons) this will definitely be a game changer.

I always wondered why they don't just store the compressed air from engine braking in large tanks and reuse it to later apply this compressed air energy to accelerate the truck. This would surely increase efficiency and fuel economy and Its really not complicated engineering. As you have discovered, there is no incentive to do this from the bean counter owners, but whoever implements will surely disrupt the industry. Every mpg increase is a game changer since insurance and fuel are the main costs. BTW, I am pretty sure these same investment giants and hedge funds have big stakes in Apple as well. However Apple is kept on its toes by Samsung who is probably not owned by these same investment companies to the same extent.

Part of the comparison is unfair, electricity is not confined by its energy but by its storage design\capacity, while fuel is constrained by its thermal\energy output, thus restricting it's efficiency to volume ratio. That being said, another part of the problem is innovation is being actively suppressed to develop high efficiency motors by these corporate giants. The other major problem is we've reached about the maximum ratio of energy output to simplicity of systems and these systems being restricted by the government. I have seen it possible to get into the low\mid teens on MPG fully loaded when there is no EPA restrictions, and the ideas implemented to actually maximize the fuel efficiency. Solutions would be 1. Get rid of the EPA as it stands 2. Incentivize systems and solutions for this, not suppress them 3. Update and enforce monopoly laws.

But maybe stick to the stuff you have a lot of knowlegde about, and not start to act like you have discovered some top secret information on how these big firms work. That investors have shares in companies are competitors, does not mean they suddenly don't compeed anymore...

The emissions equipment also plays a big factor. With the ability to remove and custom tune trucks you would see big gains in mpg
@dennisjohnson1219
@dennisjohnson1219 2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting because a friend told me that when they remove the emissions on pickups, they always get better mileage. You telling me the same holds true for semi trucks? I'm no mechanic so I'm just learning. If this is true, the emissions only create more fuel consumption. I thought the whole emissions thing is supposed to improve fuel economy and create less air pollution. Sounds like it creates less air pollution but uses more fuel, more parts and complexity, and more visits to the shop, (which also uses more fuel). So overall, it sounds like it's worse for the environment. Am I right?
@smiller3110
@smiller3110 2 жыл бұрын
@@dennisjohnson1219 definitely is the same for semis! The technology in fuel delivery and turbo have greatly improved and when you take off the restrictive emissions equiptm2nt you will see massive gains in power and mpg. Also the engine doesn't have to work as hard and engine oil stays cleaner because exhaust isn't being recycled into the engine from the egr. Also def emissions is killing bees which is actually worse for the environment than diesel emissions

I've covered this on my channel. We'll never be given the option of voting for politicians who are not owned by these same few players. In short, we'll never vote our way out of this mess. Massive general strikes and protests are the only answer. There must be a real revolution, and yes, there will be violence because the military and police also are working for the few fat cats at the top. The military and police (as they have during protests in the past) will start the violence. Peaceful protestors will be attacked. That's why those on both sides of the political aisle need to exercise our 2nd Amendment rights. If peaceful protests will be put down with violence, we need a way to continue the fight. Voting only will work in the future when We the People force the politicians to work for us. No longer will we be able to allow the fat cats to own our politicians and to own us. It's time to rise up!

As are trucks got slightly more efficient trough the last 15 years out fuel prices rose up the same time. We had 2 price drops as I recall that fuel reached under 2 $ per gallon for a short time but over all an average of around 3 dollars per gallon stayed consistent. Only the rate market jumped around in the last 15 years

Your information as to ownership is correct with PACCAR (KW & Pete) and Daimler (Freightliner & Western Star), and Volvo (Volvo & Mack) along with the other info as to the engine makers and the oil companies. But having lived in the Chicago area (10 years), in Michigan (2 years) and talked to many truck or trailer mfg. firms, in those years and since, over 50% of a Class 8 Truck's fuel consumption is overcoming wind resistance. Now the Peterbilt/Cummins' SuperTruck is supposed to clock in at 10.7 MPG and the Airflow BulletTruck is supposed to clock in at 13.4MPG. So the issue is being worked on but I am always surprised at truck operators whether fleets or one unit that don't avail themselves of regular-speed operation, tire-inflation monitors, side skirts, trailer boat tails, etc. to save fuel. Also, do not agree with the overall premise as first off, if industries other than the computer industry were able to realize the savings/productivity seen in computers, it would be amazing and the smart phones have benefited from lithium-ion batteries just like other sectors have with power tools. If this was a collaboration between engine makers and the oil companies then why have any changes to fuel economy at all?? Why have we went from 10MPG fuel economy in the early 1970s to 20MPG now for cars and light trucks obviously recognizing the impact of Federal CAFE Standards and that the car market has many more players from Asia and Europe?? But why wouldn't the conspiracy just expand to more firms?? Typically 70%-80% of all stocks in the major indexes are held by institutional investors per any number of sources including this one: www.pionline.com/article/20170425/INTERACTIVE/170429926/80-of-equity-market-cap-held-by-institutions. You will see firms like Vanguard (as I know having money in them ) in many sectors and then multiple firms within those sectors for diversification. Therefore this is not a conspiracy but just a fact of life.

How is everyone okay with this legal monopoly? I don't get it. Drivers don't get to win neither does the customer who buys product from the truck. This knowledge is never mentioned in schools or in the public or even on mainstream media so I'm trying to figure out. Is ignorance truly blessed or is there a bigger picture that I'm not seeing?

your right . but the reason trucks use so much fuel is the tires, they don't roll without friction and thats turned into heat . i got better fuel mileage with my 85 maxidyne and test show that motor produces less pollution at highway speeds . but not in city driving . why hasn't there been a variable gear driven transmission invented ? there has to be a way with tapered sliding gears .
