You can see by the video that the grade has been recently increased. The rail crossing has raised over the years and the asphalt has been resurfaced to match.

I wonder why they would do that? They should have kept it lower.
@SgtRic58
@SgtRic58 2 жыл бұрын
@@42luke93 The natural progression of rail beds is that they slowly rise above the surrounding ground level. The vibration of the trains shakes the ties slowly out of the gravel bed until more gravel is added regularly. A level crossing is almost always therefore above the surrounding landscape.

Perhaps the sat nav should indicate the road camber on crossing along with the vehicle clearance.

Could have been worse. Could have been an 85 mph Amtrak on a straight stretch and the cars on the trailer still having gas in the tanks and a fireworks factory next to it beside an oil refinery down the road from a fertilizer plant next door to a hazardous materials loading dock and 100 feet from a picnic table full of Nuns right underneath hydro electric wires with a coal mine underground.

A good idea for the drivers that pull loads that are low to the ground is to simply disconnect the leveling arm to your air bags. Raise the air bags then secure the arm. Most of the time this will work or have a raise/ lower / ride valve installed on the truck.

Had the driver kept a couple of pieces of 2" pipe and a small jack,raise one side of the trailer,put the pipe under it and just drive away,been a car hauler for 30+ years and always carry these tools as I've been stuck a couple of times myself, works 99% of the time.

+Carl Covington What if a train arrives before you can jack the trailer up and roll it off the track? Remember: By the time a train crew sees the obstruction, they likely cannot stop in time. The railroad can also charge for trains delayed up and down the line. I heard $6,000/hour. If a train goes into full emergency, some railcar's wheels may get locked up by the brakes and flat spots created. You'd pay a fortune for their replacement and repair.

I was a weigh master at a Weyerhauser plant, we had double tracks in front that crossed the main entrance for trucks. One morning a log truck stalled on the tracks, I notified the plant and they drove a barko to help get the truck off the tracks, in the process the barko took out the main power lines coming into the plant... woohoo there was fireworks, and they did get the truck off the tracks and onto the scale, then had to wait for the power company to come and fix the wires over head.... that was one exciting morning!!! The barko operator was taken to the local hospital for testing..... cya.

I was thinking that very same thing. Many, many years ago a story went like this: Trailer stuck under an overpass, traffic builds, rush hour, cars creep along. A little child rolls up in a car and says to the crew trying to "unstuck" the stuck truck, "why don't you just let the air out of the tires". Simple fix for a complex problem. It worked. They reduced the air in the tires allowing for the truck to back out of the situation.

They make an air operated 5th wheel riser assembly that lifts the 5th wheel plate 1' foot high which can be installed on any semi-tractor just like the yard spotter trucks have which use airbags instead of hydraulic ram hoist, also they make an air ride airbag extender that raises the trailers rear suspension even higher for going over crests like this. I just don't understand why someone would be in this type of business with a car hauler or lowboy trailer and not have the means to raise trailer 1' foot higher to get over these kinds of obstacles? The 5th wheel riser is available either through Fontaine or Holland dealers.

just a pull with no drop charge, so likely 400 to 600. here in hampton roads it's around 500 just to have the wrecker show up. you'll be charged the full cargo tow fee on your credit card before the driver hooks up. anything less and you'll get refunded. too many out-of-state drivers burned operators, so it's full charge up front now. LEOs call them so if you don't pay, city/state will pay the tow--to the police impound.

I ran car haulers for years. They only have about 4-7" of clearance. They scrape A LOT. Sometimes the even get stuck. I got stuck once, and the wife another time. You have to raise the tractor and sometimes also the trailer air bags by disconnecting the leveler valve arm and over lifting the bags, you'll get another 2-3" in height. If this driver would've been thinking straight, he could've done that pretty quick and saved on a $500 tow bill

It's one of the most difficult and risky jobs in trucking, but pays pretty good if the driver is careful, and has some luck. $7,500 a month is possible just driver pay. If you work for a good company and have a good dispatcher, and have some experience and can run careful and yet efficient. I exceeded $30,000 per month gross a few times with driver pay of 25%. But we had it where if the driver had a damage claim he had to pay at least insurance deductible which was $1,000. The last 3 weeks I drove I made $5,500, and lost $1,000 in one instant. when an expensive car bounced into an overhead deck on an extra hard bump and hit it's windshield. Had to get it fixed before hitting delivery point, receiving end never knew. But driving car hauler cross country was high stress and boring back and forth. I needed a lower stress and more interesting job, so I quit. Working in my home machine shop now making custom machine parts.

Mobile parking lot collision. Good size insurance claim on his load insurance. I drove a rig just like that for awhile, had to carefully consider every hump, especially tracks. Don't take em if they look doughtful. Bad judgment to hit it like that. But there's a trick that can be used to get off if it's not too hung up. Pop the airbag control rod loose and prop it at a higher bag setting. It'll push the rear of the truck up a little to get off a hangup. I got hung in the middle of the road once after one of the duals left the axle. Just beat the tow truck to it when I figured out how to get the other axle to drop and gain traction.

pick up is attempting to pull the truck which has a combined weight of about 20 tonnes. For more clerance I wonder if the cars could have been driven off to take the weight off allowing the suspension to lift. It's ironic that when bridges, pipes and cables cross roads they show warnings and height limits, but when a hazard like a short sharp rise such as a rail crossing there is usually nothing more than a yellow sign with a little black steam loco on it. I almost hooked a rail with a drake trailer but had the sense to get out and have a look. I found a better crossing further along the road.

The rear of the trailer contacted, too. A lift on the kingpin would have decreased the rear clearance and it might have got stuck worse. You see in the video, after the front of the trailer was dislodged, the rear contacted as it was backing. As it made the original turn to approach the crossing, the rear must have contacted first.

When I was a driver over the road, I did come across a moving company semi that had an air suspension on the trailer that could raise the height a few inches. I watched it in action. Top 50 stupid ideas for sign placement: after being all ready on the asphalt and the r/r crossing, some ahole decides "well, lets place a sign here so they know not cross with these big trucks." Brilliance absolute, knock your damn socks off brilliant. Now here we go: I am 73 feet long in combination rotating vehicle at or near 80,000 pounds, 13.6 high and 8.5 feet wide and some brilliant rocket scientist posts a no truck crossing sign at the very spot I need to cross. Now, Im stretched 68 feet into the intersection or street behind me to find out I cant cross the tracks. Guess what junior now I get to back up into my blind spot which is directly behind my trailer into ma and pa kettle in their nissan altima because their precious members of the city council dont get it! How about posting things like this 1/4 mile or greater BEFORE we get committed at the location. Bridges and overpasses do it but intersections, railroad crossings and the like cant. Why not? It doesnt show why not on a map, not on a hard ledger and not on a gps. Instead we as drivers have to fucking find out WHEN WE GET THERE! Absolute brilliance. Take your volkswagen and go get your products. Better yet, have the train stop by your house. Better yet build your house on the tracks...there is no sign posted not too, find out later why not. Get it?

ike fun ) No, there isn't a hump in the railroad line - as you say, that would be impossible - but there has clearly been a deep patch added either side of the track, and as Keithra68 says, the hump is excessively steep, and the road surface further away from the tracks hasn't been smoothed out properly (that would take longer and cost more money...) so far from the railroad being in a position to sue the truck company for delaying their trains, unless they put some clear signs warning of the excessive steepness, the railroad will have to pay for any damage to the truck due to the ineptitude of its contractor.
@trainzguy2472
@trainzguy2472 6 жыл бұрын
It is not the railroad's problem, it is the responsibility of the city to maintain the road surface. The railroad is only responsible for the train tracks and crossing infrastructure like lights and bells. The railroad may realign their tracks however they wish. Usually the railroad will rebuild the crossing if they are redoing track, but they don't always do a good job with the road surface (they are a railroad company, not highway constructors!) so it is up to the city to deal with the ramps leading up to the crossing.
