Today we meet Kathryn who is living full-time in a very nice truck camper. A genetic illness forced her to leave corporate America where they had little tolerance for her illness. Desperate for something to do she discovered the nomadic life and sold everything and moved into her camper. Today, she sees it as the very best decision she ever made!!

After my heart attack and bypass surgery I was left so depressed I took off in my pickup and campershell with my cat. I thought I might die out under my beloved Nevada sky. I didn't, and after a year went by I realised I was doing pretty good.

"need to sit when I need to sit an be sick when I need to be sick" and ya know what? That's Ok. Being disabled does not make us helpless necessarily. It just means we have different baggage than others. Sometimes we need help. Sometimes we need to be left alone. Oh wait! This sounds like being human! ;) You just keep on keep'in on! ♥️

Yes, word! As a person with fibromyalgia and a fused right SI joint, along with depression from the lifestyle changes that come out of it I understand. I also lost my father in 2006, mom in 2009, and husband in 2011. While dealing with my pending hip problems and the disability process, of course our home was lost. I worked hard a a working supervisor in an automotive mirror manufacturing company for 27 years which also gave me arthritis. If I had the capital to invest I would love to be a part-time nomad. I live in Michigan, have 4 grandchildren and now one great granchild now so I couldn't go full time. Society as a whole doesn't empathize with hidden disabilities, and the need for people to rest when they need to, and how we can be vibrant at other times! I love this woman and her resiliance!

What's messed up is we think only the disabled need to rest or take time to heal. We might need to more often, but everyone's body needs a certain amount of rest and everyone heals faster when they take care of themselves. I've watched so many people in my life work themselves so hard they actually became disabled. My stbx (soon to be ex) husband recently had to spend 2 days in the hospital because he was so sleep deprived his brain stopped working and he completely lost touch with reality.

That shower is brilliant!! Been there getting off pain management on my own, changing my lifestyle giving up the high paying job. I'm poor but much healthier all around. Even off the antianxiety stuff for PTSD. It's a much better way of living. Nature, fresh air. Some artistic outlet, bike riding. Good for you.😁

I'm on pain meds and can't live without them which means I'll never be able to be free like you. How did you go off pain meds? And how do you manage your pain? You can reach me on fb at Nancy Ann Gibson. I'm from Melbourne, Fl. If I could do it I would. I really dislike condo lifestyle but when your disabled, what else can I buy when I can't work. Do you ever dream of going back to work? I know I do but no one would hire me.

If Kathryn has a laptop, there's something she can do for some extra cash; do science tutoring on line! That way she gets to keep using her degree, and has the option to work as little as she wants. If all she wants to do is a couple of students a week, she can. Hey, it'll contribute to the gas money!

Pro tip you can use a Hudson sprayer to shower with. They can hold more than a gal and are cheap and re buildable if a part/seal breaks. You pump them up with air after you add the water and use the spray wand. I use one to wash my legs and feet since I can't reach them because of my joints.

I know where you are at. I was an ICU RN for 23 years. I had to have back and shoulder surgery due to my job and still worked 12 hour shifts in pain. I developed rheumatoid arthritis 8 years ago but still worked needing days to recover. After all that, my company kicked me to the curb when I turned 55. I knew my body would fail me but did not expect that. Just before losing my job, I found 3 acres in the country with a small house. I was able to pick it up for 35k. My brother has PTSD with an anxiety disorder from the military. We moved to my house, grow and raise the majority of our food and are happier than we have been in years. I lost my husband 10 years ago and he divorced 6 years ago. It works for us. I get $500 a month disability and he gets $800. So far since moving here, life is good.

Here is what's good for anybody when they go camping or RVing for any length of time. I gets you off your butt and out of your rut and fills your mind with New Stuff every second so you don't spend your idle time thinking of everything you screwed up in your life. That is Most important for retired people because if you don't have a full calendar everyday, you can slip into a deep depression that only gets worse. Even if you had a really good and productive life, in retirement, your routine has changed dramatically. Get Up, Get Out and Do Something and Driving is pretty easy to do! My 2cents! P.S. Do I do it? Nope! Sometimes it's easier said than done but I have a plan! You should create one too! Just the planning can wake you right up!

If you have a lot of time in your hands, invest it on helping others.

Totally agree with you JB91710 , except the driving part due to sciatica. But still, yes it is important to move. I have lived my life for everyone but myself. And am committed right now to taking care of my grand daughter. But as soon as she's able to be back with her mother I'm going to get going. This isn't how I had envisioned my latter years. Sooo depressed but when I was younger I worked hard and always stayed in shape and busy. That's how I survived.

@@gemcatgirl definitely nothing at all wrong with helping other people. We should love and serve others but we still should make time to do things just for ourselves. I'm a genuine, certified people pleaser who can get wrapped up helping others until I am completely depleted of physical and mental strength so I think balance is key to being healthy. We have to fill our own souls with healthy fun.

@@rea7203 Absolutely! You are 100% right! There is no need to be a people pleaser but, doing good for goodness sake. Actually, the 'do gooder' benefits more than the person whom the deed was bestowed upon. There is substantial evidence that even your immune system improves when you perform a good deed!
