This is an extremely well-made knot instruction video: - It gets right to the point. - I can see the rope and what you're doing with it the whole time. - The instructions are labeled in steps, and the steps are clearly punctuated with pauses. - The phrasing is uniform and understandable throughout.

My dad was a trucker in the late 60's through the 80's, and I've seen him use this knot frequently to tie things down. I never could tie it, but I never did ask him to show me either. A while back, I tried to tie one and ended having to cut the rope afterwards. Good video, I'll have to practice this one.

You are a born Teacher. I am 62 and in my change of life went from a new Cadillac to a used pickup truck this year to help haul things for my adult kids, so I wanted to learn a knot/hitch such as this. And I “got” it. Excellent explanation, pace, audio and visual. Rather proud of myself and thankful to you. Watched several other KZfaq videos over and over to learn this, until I lucked upon yours, which I Saved and now have surely learned the ropes! I actually fall asleep going through the tying motions with a smile on my face :-)

FINALLY the truckers hitch i was taught. im seeing so many videos on youtube that use the wrong type of hitch using a simple slipknot and looping the rope through it claiming its a "truckers hitch". wrong. this is the propper way i was taught. thanks for reminding me how to do it. thumbs up

Nothing wrong with Slipknot methods if they are for small loads. Just put twists in the rope before you feed the bight through. Slipknot is good for ridge lines too. Just depends what you’re tying down!!

Good demonstration. I taught myself that when I moved to Australia in the '60s by modifying the traditional British dollie hitch. The difference is because on British lorries we had hooks not rails so the method was different. It was also easier making the 2nd loop unecessary. Another advantage was that we carried only 2 or 3 much longer ropes which went over and back several times. This method only works with hooks. A dying, or dead, art nowadays though when everybody has ratchet straps.

David Marker Snr. Thank you very much, very rare to see one nowadays in England but some welsh and Irish and Scottish flatbeds knocking around. Can’t beat roping and sheeting but the ministry, DVSA or whatever they’re called this week don’t condone anything on the hooks. 😂😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Great video . Need to mention that , a clove hitch works well , BUT , if the rope somehow looses it tension , a clove hitch will fall apart . Part of the reason that there is the clove hitch and a half right a the beginning . Loads can shift or stuff shuffles , and tensions change , so use whatever tail you have , to double lock the knot , as extra insurance . This is really only most important , if it is a soft load , rather than hard pallets as shown . One could start with a Bowline knot , easy to undo as a Clove , and as quickly tied , but won't undo if line gets floppy . Well done Unddycover . You could "twang " that rope to shown the tension advantage of your knot . Thank you .

To anyone that comes across this, i usually twist the loop twice or three times if you have enough rope and it wont move. (if the rope is thin) Either way, This is one of the most useful hand knots you will ever learn and any trckie worth his salt that drives past you and your load is gunna give you that little nod of respect.

This is a true 'truckies knot 'as we say in Australia or trucker's knot and is least likely to slip. The wagoners knot that most non truckers confuse with the truckies knot is a very good knot but not as safe as this one. Unfortunately they demonstrate it as the Trucker's knot but it is inferior. The way the rope is looped is not clearly shown due to the camera work in this video. It is the best explanation I have seen of the right way to rope down a load.

I have to do a truck hitch in a driving test for my truck license. This video is easy to follow, I have practiced this truckies hitch knot on my trailer but I can only do the single knot. Then I have trouble doing the double knot, after he puts the rope around the rail and shows how to do the loops. The 2.20 till the 2.40 minutes on the video is were I have trouble when I try the double knot. But this video is the best one for me to learn on and practice makes perfect.

Another more simple method for tying off the loose end instead of a clove hitch is to do a half with a tail right below the leverage point of the loop (Literally pinch the leverage point so it doesn't slip through, swing it around the back and pull the loop through). This is especially effective when you don't have enough to get down to the bar and is much easier to undo :-)

The original name for this type of hitch was a 'sheep shank' and I think the shank was once used to shorten ropes. bizvisa is correct about using a double loop when using synthetic ropes. Often synthetic ropes are very slippery and the loop will just slip. This usually wasn't a problem with the old hemp type ropes. Now I want to see someone tying a load using twitch sticks! lol Any old truckies out there who have carted bales of wool will know what I'm talking about.

I am 1.8 metres tall, weigh around 110 KG, am a smidgen over 600 mm across my shoulders; all of which means I take up a bit of space. I also used to do weight training up to 8 hours a week. I can remember using a truckies hitch to tie down a load on my trailer. I was using nylon rope which was about 15 mm thick. I got so much purchase on the rope I snapped it; nearly went on my arse 🙂. When I checked the rope I found it wasn't so much the tension I created but the heat in pulling it down; simply melted the rope. So, note to self - only use natural fibre ropes.

I personally think a clove hitch and a half is the best knot to use for the anchor point. Fairly secure & it’s easiest to remember when you are tying the hitch inversely. If your support rails are large or you have stake pockets, then a fixed loop knot would be better to start out with. Always finish with a clove hitch and a half though. If you’re that paranoid about it coming undone, just make an overhand stopper knot with the rest of your tail.
