If reliability is a priority, always go for the last model year of a particular vehicle. I still like the idea of the new hybrid 4R with its 2400w onboard capability but at the same time this would do just fine with an Ecoflow or similar.

Last week I dumped my 24 Tundra for this exact 4Runner and couldn’t be happier. Although there was a lot I liked about the Tundra I just didn’t feel confident with the reliability and longevity of the engine. Although mine wasn’t under recall yet, I’m sure that will be coming to all the 22,23, & 24 Tundras. I actually use my 4 WD vehicles on ocean beaches and on deep woods logging trails and would be screwed if my engine blew up. On another note the build quality of this 4Runner blows the build quality of the new Tundras and Tacomas away. My guess is the 6th gen 4Runner will also suffer in the build quality category as well. Yes it will be built in Japan but Toyota seems to have ‘cheaped out’ on all components. The plastics in the new Tundra couldn’t be any cheaper or thinner. The plastic which formed the base of my driver seat on the Tundra cracked twice and I weigh less than 200 lbs., come on Toyota, really? 🤦‍♂️

The 4Runner was always a vehicle that I wanted. I picked up a 23 TRD Off Road a month ago and despite the horrible fuel economy and anemic powertrain it's everything I wanted it to be. I absolutely love the thing. It has a charm to it that is difficult to describe and will be a a vehicle I keep as long a possible.
@stephanematis
@stephanematis 14 күн бұрын
as a '17 TRD Off Road owner, your description of the powertrain is sadly dead on. I love the KDSS, the roll down rear window, but there are times where the engine/transmission make think '80s under-powered econobox and I am torn recommending it. Towing ? Painful choice. Need to pass someone while loaded for back country travel ? Plan it well. Will I change this reliable beast ? Hard to consider given the alternatives. I do recommend that people treat the undercarriage, say with lanolin, if you live in the salt belt. And if you have a TRD Off Road, exercise the 4L mechanism as often as you can on loose surface, otherwise it gets cranky. My transmission often won't get out of 4L in the normal manner, needing to stop in neutral, power off and then shift. When asked, I always mention how I wish the V8 had been an option on the 4Runner, my gut says it was built and sized for the larger engine.
@timalan7406
@timalan7406 13 күн бұрын
@@stephanematis Your description is exactly why this and other Toyotas are such great trucks. The 4.0 is built for 385 hp but is tuned to 278. If it were tuned to make you happy with the power, it wouldn't last long. That is why other manufactures suck, they chase numbers and impressions, which in the long run are worth about as much as their used trucks.

60k (USD) is likely a real cash cow for a vehicle that's required little to no P&D over the past 10 years or so. I bet they can make these for $30-ish thousand, and are riding the wave caused by the other manufacturers and their over zealous MSRP increases. My wife loves her '18 that we got for $33k brand new. Seems like a steal now.

I tend to be decisive but I'm planted squarely on the fence between the 2024 and 2025 4Runners. I've owned a couple of 4Runners (including a truly awful 4 cylinder in the early 1990's). I would wait for the 25 if it wasn't for the 4 cylinder even though it is a turbo. I'm thinking of longevity which is hard to imagine anywhere close to 5th Gen.

I have a 98 Tacoma that has the same quality & reliability as the 24 4 runner & i don't care what anybody says, in my opinion, Toyota should just keep building these types of vehicles, they last forever if u take care of them & hard working people deserve an opportunity to purchase a good quality item like this that lasts, it seems our society has totally lost that, very frustrating & sad!!

The 4Runner is somewhat in a class by itself. Meaning, it doesn't do any one thing great, but does a lot of things really good. It is also a vehicle that if you keep up on maintenance could legitimately last your lifetime and/or pass down to your kids or grandkids. I'm right under 50 years old and I can't stand the 14" computer screens and computer gauge clusters that come on new cars. I don't want or need any of that crap. I'll take reliability and a vehicle that can go anywhere I need to go on and off road and I know it's going to get me home at the end of the day. If I could buy the new 6th gen for 10K less than the current 5th gen I'd still buy the 5th gen. I'm serious.

Toyota has been doing some weird things lately... 1) the 5th gen 4Runner has more cargo space than the new Sequoia (by almost 3 cubic feet when all rear seats are folded down in both). 2) the styling of the new Tacoma is peak 1990s plastic transformer knockoff...the kind of thing you'd find on a messy toy isle at your local Kmart store. Can't believe I'm saying this, but for the first time ever, the Chevy Colorado is by far the best looking mid-sized truck in NA. 3) that "crease" on the sides of new Toyota's looks like the vehicle has already been t-boned. I get that BMW and Hyundai are pioneering that hip pre-crashed look, like brand new already ripped and worn jeans, or patina paint jobs), but Toyota needs to smooth some of these vehicles out. 5) the styling of the 6th gen 4Runner looks "thrown together at the last minute"...almost like the Land Cruiser was maybe supposed to replace the 4Runner until Toyota realized how crazy of a mistake that would be for their bank account. The front end is just "Tacoma" and the rear is just a 5th gen with new trim pieces to make it fit...they could have named it a "TacoRunner". 6) weird engine (Tundra) and transmission (Tacoma) issues that are just unlike Toyota to do...thankfully, unlike other manufacturers, Toyota is rushing to fix things instead of gaslighting customers (mostly, I think). I don't for one second think this is the end of all things Toyota, but I absolutely won't be rushing out to get any of these new vehicles anytime soon. My 5th gen 4Runner and me will sit this one out.

I would buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner all day over a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco.

I think the downside with jeep is that the powertrain is awful and so many issues with Chrysler. Ford is a little better but I don’t see how a raptor compares to a 4Runner. I think the bronco does but for some of the prices they are trying to get for the broncos is outrageous. I will say it’s showing its age now. I still picked a TRD pro up cause I think that it will go down as a rare and special car moving forward.

Toyota is having some tough times with the many new models..It’s growing pains. Toyota will actually fix it just give um time. They have always come through and supported their customers. They flew in an engineer to document a seat rattle on my 2013 tundra.

I'd sooner call the Jeep Grand Cherokee a competitor of the 4runner, not the wrangler.

You compared off-road-ability to Wrangler and Bronco, but you forgot another major point in favor of the 4Runner and that is ON-ROAD-ability. I've driven all three of these and yes, the Wrangler and Bronco are impressive, but overall, I think I would rather daily drive the current 4Runner more than the other two. If you were to consider the Wrangler and Bronco as fixed blade knives, the 4Runner is a multitool. I bought a 2023 last year for all the reasons you've stated, and this past year with it has only reinforced my decision.

If the problem Toyota is having with the tundra tell you anything buy this 4runner before the update like the older style and the reliability of the v6 and I dont understand the complaint about the cameras didn’t you even drive a vehicle without cameras those were the good days 🤷🏻‍♂️

5th Gen 4Runner most probably be the last 4Runner I would buy. Lot of new Toyotas are out of my list. The main purpose to buy Toyota is reliability. So vehicles like Tundra, Sequoia, LX600, GX550 are out of my list. Same story for new Land cruiser, Tacoma, are out for me.

Unless you are going rock crawling, this will go anywhere the others will and get you home. Probably drag your hitch though.

No brainer. The best gen 4runner is this 2024. Get it before you regret it.

Cool car for sure, but the pricing is pretty outrageous, at least for the Pro. And the others aren’t particularly well-priced either, considering that you aren’t getting much. And if you are buying a brand new car, does reliability matter more than anything else? Most people swap cars every 3-5 years anyway. But if you are the type to have the car for the next 10 years and 150k miles, then I get the appeal. Though the gas costs will be so high, maybe you won’t be saving that much with the extra reliability.

Looks like the New Tacoma's have some transmission issues, and there have been confirmed report of transmission failure. I wouldn't trust the New 4Runner for the first couple of year models until it's proven.

4Runner gets you there and back. Jeep gets you there make sure you have all your repair gear. Bronco leaves you in the parking lot. All look good.

Too bad the 4.0 is going away, it wasn’t the most efficient engine but it was solid. To be replaced with the turbo 4 cylinder from the Taco.

Horrible crash ratings, fuel econ, ergonomics, transmission programming. If you want one still, I’d go used for those reasons above.
Should you get a Toyota 4Runner Now? Or Wait for the New One?
