Went to Vietnam in 1994 and the US trucks were still running up and down Highway 1 in large numbers but boy were they worn out, belching smoke, glass missing bald tires dented and damaged bodies, but they still ran. The Vietnamese would repair them where they stopped, in the middle of the highway, no worries, remove the entire engine and rebuild it in the middle of the road. One moonlight night, we were stopped on the side of highway 1 at 2am in the morning, you could hear a truck approaching making a terrible racket, there was no glass at all, no lights working, it was pouring smoke from the exhaust and the driver was standing rather than sitting, it was doing maybe 20 mph. It had a full load of crushed rock in the tray and slowly disappeared into the darkness. I will never forget that sight. Tough trucks indeed.

These were the Duce an a half and 5 ton trucks I drove an worked on while in The U.S.Army, back from 1973-1976, while stationed at Ft. Carson CO. We had a really cool Motor Officer in charge of our MotorPool, he was a Warrant Officer 3, who name was as we called him, Mr. Sleeper. Who was like we all were MotorHead/s. He let us do things to Army Vehicles, NOT in the books! Like swap out a 5-ton Multifuel engine, into a Duse an a half! The only difference between them was the 5 ton had a turbo, with bigger injectors and power steering, whereas the 2.5 had neither! We installed the more powerful engine and power steering into the 2.5T truck, with the Governor turned all the way up! At 4,000 rpm’s the truck could get up to 85mph!!

As Yoo Toob is viewed world wide and America is not the only country on planet Earth, perhaps the title of this should read, American Trucks of the Vietnam War ... us Aussies were in Vietnam as well, and we had our own trucks there.

The gun truck "Eve of Destruction" @5:18 still exists today. It is on display in the US Army transportation museum at Ft. Eustis, VA. It looks just as it did then. One of the curators told me it still can fire up and run under its own power but rarely leaves the inside fo the museum.

@Some 1poisoned the water hole Yeah buddy. I always hear our enemies would try to destroy America from within. I'm for civil protest but if anyone starts looting and burning then expect martial law. Law and order NOT mob rule! This Veteran will still stand up for the Stars & Stripes! 🇺🇸 Be safe friend.

Back B4 I went in to the Army I worked at a CONDEC Truck plant making tow trucks and deuce and a half's to be sent to Vietnam. They said the life expectancy was about 6 weeks B4 it was blown up. The ones towing the fuel tanks were the ones I worked on, then off to the Army. I'm happy they mentioned CONDEC they made so much money off the war.

An interesting fact, these trucks were fabricated by the Transportation Units in vietnam and not the infantry. They were used for convoy protection and referred to as "hard trucks", not gun trucks, because USARV said that "gun trucks" weren't authorized.

You have an older M37 for the Korean trucks video but M37B1s were extremely plentiful in Vietnam as well as the Kaiser trucks in the later stages. Kind of a massive oversight not discussing them here. M37B1s were everywhere.

The info for the M113 is correct but, maybe only a few ever went to Nam. The M113A1 replaced it and did go to Nam in great numbers. There were a few M114s that went to Nam but, there were too many problems with it forced it's to be taken out and replaced by the M551.

@Howie Felterbush I was there from 1972 -Jan. 1975. The M114 was still in use and man those little things could haul-ass. I never did get to ride one but, they are very cramped inside. I drove nearly everything else in the army over many years both in and after I got out as I worked for the DOD for some years at a research development center.
