It’s a bittersweet truth: the very best of police detective work is likely to be born out of the very worst of mankind. It’s certainly the case when it comes to the investigation into the death of Cecilia Haddad. She was a young Brazilian woman who’d been living in Australia, working as a mining executive, for a number of years.
In 2018 she was murdered by a jealous ex-boyfriend, Marcelo Santoro. He was also from Brazil and it's where he fled to immediately after killing Cecilia. Santoro might have thought by escaping Australia he'd gotten away with his terrible crime, but he was wrong. On assignment for 60 MINUTES, Nine’s Christine Ahern reports that Santoro didn’t count on the determination of New South Wales police officers to bring him to justice.

Having been a victim myself (survived having been shot 7 times) you don't imagine that this can happen to you. It is unimaginable to a normal person. He shot himself with the last bullet in his head. The police officer who questioned me afterwards said that that was good otherwise I would never have been left in peace. 40 years on, went on to become an alpiniste and a successful pt. Had a great partner, sadly now deceased, who gave me back my trust.

As much as i hate what that guy did, his appearance shouldn't factor in what sort of personality he has. If anything looking at how he presented himself he should've been real lucky Cecilia even looked his way at all, she was WAY outta his league surely. It really is saddening that people with such insecurities and issues that he has that he was never able to fully face them internally and learn to deal with those issues before even entertain the likleyhood of a relationship instead of going into one and have those insecurities interfere well into the course of that relationship. People of either gender should be well adjusted before they consider entering into a relationship.

That’s great when people are too afraid to dispense justice that they joyfully count on the criminals themselves to do it due to the inhumane living conditions they force the criminals to endure. @@dolorestroeller4734 Usually, the word “terrorist” is applied to people who belong to organized groups with an ideological goal they all want to achieve. But patriarchal murderers (men who feel entitled to control, attack, murder their female girlfriends and spouses) I think could be seen as belonging to a larger ideological group. They are both stalkers and terrorists - the stalking is the behaviour, the terror one of the emotions felt by their victims.

I had a stalker, an ugly israeli from a town modiin. amir forshmit. He made my life a nightmare, I ended up with a burnout and a mess. There were threats, blackmails, silent phonecalls, phonecalls all night night long, he showed me once that the bullets in his gun were real. He was a body guard, protecting israeli groups. We changed a house, he got my new address. It felt like walking in a grey cloud, danger around the corner. Back then I didn't know that was a criminal deed. I felt confused, scared and also sorry for him. He must have "loved me" so much. Now I know it had nothing to do with anything kind and loving, just an ugly jerk full of complexes who could not respect 'no'. Awful awful people, they are real thieves of joy.

It happened to me when I was in my late 30s a few years ago in the UK. My ex went as far as bugging my flat. I left London for Brighton and he found me through the electoral register. He almost killed me. Police did not take stalking seriously at the time. I left the UK and went under the radar, living off grid on a boat in the Bahamas for about 3 years before returning. Stalking is a serious crime. It terrifies not only the victims but their friends and family as well for weeks, months, sometimes years, even if they don't end up getting murdered. What makes any man think that he has the right to do this is beyond me. Cecilia didn't report him because she didn't want him to have a record. This should teach all other victims a lesson. “Just put a stop to it early.. don’t let it escalate.” You’d think these words from an officer who works solely on stalking cases would know- and fully understand that it’s rarely that simple for someone who’s in a relationship like that- or just being stalked by someone they don’t know- in fact that would be THAT much more difficult to try and do anything about the situation. You only have power over yourself and your actions- you can’t control the stalker and the only thing that ever helps in these situations is removing the stalker from the equation- ie put in jail/prison. And even then, they still pose a huge risk to the victim after they’re released. What a blatantly ignorant statement. That right there is why we still, to this day have such problems getting help from authorities because they think that we should be able to “nip it in the butt”, just like that. It’s never that simple. It’s very hard hearing that come out of someone’s mouth who’s sole responsibility is to eliminate these threats.

Having volunteered for some time with a victims of violent crime unit, in joint with the police; I learned just how important it is to report any threatening or disturbing behavior to the authorities. One should also tell friends and family; they can help, watch, and remember. Too often, the situation escalates to violence, as it did in this poor girl's situation. I feel terrible for her family and friends, and for the couple who found her. The man who murdered her, doesn't deserve to be named. So many lives ruined or scarred; it's all so sad. You mean so they have the evidence they need to arrest him after he finally murders her? I’m being a bit snarky here obviously but from personal experience & from watching so many of these shows you can call the police every time there’s an incident, tell friends & family, document everything & very rarely do these obsessive stalkers/murderers get any jail time or more than a slap on the wrist for making someone’s life a living hell. The more they do the more they see they’re getting away with it. And we finally have stalking laws but you wouldn’t know it sadly. It is still good advice to document & tell everyone what’s happening but it just doesn’t do much unfortunately.

We had a friend in a similar situation and she would not do a thing about it. We weren't under any restraints like that. I got arrested for changing the locks on her doors without permission. But that was the tiny snowball that got things looking better. We helped her make many changes, but she made one huge mistake that we all said she should not do. She refused to get a new phone and new telephone number. And the jerk traced her, through the phone, to a new address. And the security I installed outside her home (without her knowledge) caught her killer coming and going, and it matched with the estimated time of death..... It just seems like all our work only resulted in a more solid police case. One thing different between the Brazilian punishment... In the USA, the JA only got 11 years. And will be out and walking around with two years off for 'good behavior'. This guy in Brazil? Probably will not survive prison there.... We need that fear here to get things changed and we need to trust our REAL friends a lot more.

Unfortunately, there are also still many many police officers who don't take family violence, harrassment and controlling relationships seriously. Firsthand experience showed me there was no point in going to the police for assistance. Firstly, repeat offenders are essentially allowed to carry on moving from victim to victim, until something horrible like this tragedy occurs. Secondly, there are still officers out there who refuse to listen to victims and their advocates in the first place. Even if you do find someone to take you seriously, what are the consequences? I discovered after the fact that my abuser had MULTIPLE orders against him from a number of women in his life. Not once has he been held accountable for his actions and crimes. I blame the police for not doing something about it sooner, and subjecting myself and countless other women to his behaviours. I want to have hope that these tragedies might stop one day.. but it's pretty damn hard.
