As a young kid, I grew up in a Church of Christ in southern Kentucky. Our congregation only sang songs without the use of any musical instruments. It was called "singing your praises to the lord". My grandfather passed when I was 15 in 1977, and he had requested our church members sing this song at his funeral. Still difficult today for me to hear this song without tearing up.

Few movie remakes are better than the original, but this is the exception. Great acting, and a inspired soundtrack, especially Iris' singing.

I just lost my Daddy in October. When I was a child he was the song leader in our small country church. This was one of his favorite hymns. I can see him, clear as day, singing this beautiful song. It is the most touching, beautiful version I've ever heard & I've yet to watch the movie without crying at the end. The movie, the song, it's all perfect & very special to me. Makes me feel like he's still here with me.

I dare to disagree, yes this remake was cast well, and directed to portray the original. But in no way is it better then the original True Grit with John Wayne in the lead role. I liked them both equally, but the duke just had a way with his westerns.
@Hooby.4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree that the remake is a better movie but you simply can’t replace the significant presence and impact the duke had on screen with that being said I enjoy the remake so much more, the ending the story telling and the dialogue is fantastic
@johnnysalter70724 жыл бұрын
I agree John Wayne's version is sophomoric, at the very best compared to The Coen Brothers. I am old enough I can remember my grandfather, great Uncles, and all talking almost exactly like they did in the Court Room scene. And I know from these old guys that it was rough as hell back then. And this was set in eastern Oklahoma, and it is rough now. John Wayne was never really an actor but a Movie star. That is why a lot of people love him so, they want a hero and he played that well. He was nearly the same in almost every roll. Just watched Liberty Valance, the same thing. However, I think that was the best western he appeared it. But not because of him but because of Lee Marvin. Watch this courtroom scene. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m52amsp0yMzdmnk.html

I love the way the theme starts out as a mere suggestion in the beginning of the film, a lone, slow piano with just a phrase of the melody here and there. More and longer interludes are heard behind key scenes until, at the end, the whole thing, lyrics, piano and that haunting voice arrive in a final crescendo of strangely joyous melancholy.

Stop for a moment. Listen to the words of this song. I dont know anyone else on here. I dont know your personal beliefs. I dont know your backgrounds, or where you were born. What I do know is this song offers something to those who believe. This song offers comfort, just like it has offered me comfort at times in my life, when I have lost those I care about. Times when mistakes I had made put me in a position that all I had left was those everlasting arms of God. So stop, and listen.

Have you seen/heard Iris in "Songcatcher" (2000)? A really good movie! She had a small role & also sang. It's about a a female Dr. of music/musicologist, who in the early 1900's takes (vintage/wax cylinders) recording equipment to Appalachia, in an effort to document American folk music. Much to her surprise, much of the music is nearly as pure/unchanged as it was in the early 1700's. Iris is the wife of a poor, mountain farmer. So as not to give anything away, I don't want to say anymore.
