If you step on "photorealistic" leaf, will it break, will every individual grass part move by the wind or rain drop ? Real world is not made of flat polygons and pictures. Every single atom moves together to create it. It's hard to think humans will ever make "true" realism in games.

You know now that I really think about it, if the image on screen could adjust according to the dilation of the pupil and your vision wasn't limited by the size of your screen (no matter how big it may be) that would contribute greatly to how natural a VR experience would feel, despite having imperfect graphics. That's out of scope though.

To be honest, I think what gives away the CGI every time is the camera work - the rendering itself looks fine, but if you have silky smooth camera panning from impossible angles then that is always going to look unrealistic. The future of realism is not the modelling, it's the camera work.

in the first shoot 0:59 is truly awsome i have no complains; at 1:08 the dry grass sticks in the closest proximities of the tree shoud look a bit more dark since the light must not be that strong as a flash light pointing to the floor, we expect a soft atmospheric lightning unlike what is in the scene ; in 1:20 i was expecting a lower reflection in the angular big rock in the middle-right part of the video, is a very good shoot btw; the 2:00 almost perfect, except for maybe they overused micro peeks over the whole surface and the real sea is not that much super close spikies, is a very calm sea not boiling water or a cloudy storm; the 2:22 house is majestic but the dark big thin grass near the camera and the periphery of the river have an odd flat dark color which given the magnitude of the light has no sense and looks fake, and in the very end 2:28 the chunk of the tree near camera in the left have a constant brown-red color that is not even close to the reality, same as 2:47 i think the textures are wrong positioned the arm of the tree is curved but so subtile and have a constant thickness, that does not happen in real trees, its shape is soo smooth unlike what the texture tell us about the tree, but is so convincing in the whole scene considering the duration; at 3:08 the Nintendo controller have a beautiful appearance, not a single inconsistency! same perfect match at 3:05 , 3:17 , 3:24 ; 3:27 !! the non biological materials look amazing; looking 3:37 , have room to improve, in the sence all trees are clones, same species of tree, at same age with same/similar shape, it is a ultra redundant scene where u basically can spot spheres of fuzzy green on an island... a very bad work, but changing to many species of trees, and the factor of light reflected in each tree, and tones given different parts of every tree, it will definitely improve, now, it says is an island but given the color of the water, its waves and composition, tells the audience it is a river, not an estuary not the sea, so is not an island ; in a blink of an eye you can tell is a very very fake scene at 4:35, the car have by no means any touch of realism on its materials (look plastic) its speed (constant speed even when turning! wtf) and its momentum at the end in the last turn is gone, is like a helium balloon, have no mass, you cant feel the weight of it, there are many physics simulators if you don't know how to animate a car.. an amateur work, i will not mention about the street rendering wich is a pain; 5:07 .... well, they just took the "island" and change the little green spheres and make them white, but all what i talk up about the trees, is valid here, a horrible scene and a poor work, even on the snow in the parts where there are no "trees", is totally a fail, is a pain to see an insult to categorize as "photo realistic" those look like fungus, the authors think a tree in that high slope will have that form? that angle? to not mention the abuse of clones there; 6:40 the sky and the sea are two different things, they are not related at all in this lightining setting, now in 7:15, divide the screen in 4 rectangles from left to right with vertical lines only, look at the 3rd rectangle (from left to right) its right side, in the center is a blocky cubic rock, that is not convenient, its corners and edges are white, and dry, dusty ,but inside, down, is dark as a wet mud chunk, a very bad choice, for the rest, the shoot is totally realistic; 7:19 and 7:32 repeated renders; repeated 7:38 and again, look that sharp rock, its reflection, what it tells? it was wattered a few seconds ago is super wet but the weather tells is so cold not a water drop could be liquid... it makes a lot of sense; 7:57 look down, left now go up slowly, until u reach the first green leaf, is overexposed, like it where reflecting light as a metal like a sword, other option is that the material is wet and the water reflects that huge amount of light to make a overtone, overexpose color, but the scene is in a dry forest, umm very consistent should i say... ; the next scenes until 8:12 look majestic, but in 8:12 the color of the leafs.. that green-yellow color... i saw outside and find many Ferns with that ultra bright radioactive color, yes, is super common i know; 8:17 that IS photorealistic scene!, no sarcasm here, it looks nice, really; 8:20 same burned radioactive green pleasant to sight but absolute fantasy and cartoonish, the next scene for the rock that not matches the scene (the author can go to a forest put a rock in the ground, see how it looks in a twilight, take a pic, and with that pic work in the colors) the next scenes have the famous radioactive green in ferns i never saw with naked eyes in a forest, all the scenes are easy to spot are super duper push, forced, fixed up, that will not be even have a diferential fragment of photo-looking because they don't respect the physical phenomena involved in nature, growth, optics, and wetness and dryness, and much much more, the software is ready, but need a very professional people that know about all to not make a mess as this renders.. i loved the video, hope someone that have a bit of knowledge use blender in the correct way to make a good approximation of the scene he wanna do in photorealistic style.

The fact that it's been made in a free open source software isn't important. I'm a Maya user and I reckon that Blender is just as good. It's a matter of rendering engines. Blender uses Cycles, Maya uses Arnold (and previously v-ray), which is better. In any cases, Renderman is the best rendering engine and it's available for all DCC apps (including Blender).

This wan't made in unreal. Maybe your just joking around but a lot of people in these comments are thinking that this is in unreal engine. This is in an animation / 3d modeling software named blender, these things take hours of rendering and are not in real time. This isn't a game, you cant just hop in and start looking around, you have to animate the camera movements and then leave the software to render for a few hours or sometimes a few days,

9:48 fun fact, photorealistic rocks like these are often made by taking many photos of a real rock from different angles, then putting them all into a program which turns them into a 3D mesh of the rock which you then have to texture. Realistic rocks like these can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars (often in a pack).

Photo-realism is acheived through a set of things, that must work together. Ofcourse you've got to have good textures, and enough detailed models aswell. Illumination and post-processing are importat too clearily. But. There's a subtle thing that must glue everything: a thing that I call "coherent randomity". There's got to be some randomity, but not too forced. Everything must be different, not each leaf is the same, not each grass blade is the exact copy of another, each pebble is unlike the one sitting nearby.

To me the house scene is a perfect example of how important animation is. The lighting is perfect. The modeling is perfect and the reflections are perfect. But since everything is perfectly still, it feels off. Obviously this is just a demo for the lighting systems, but I personally really want to see a good leaf and grass animation system introduced into the scene just to see how far you can push the photorealism.

The last ocean one is a so close to perfect. The movement of the water is a bit too fast and repetitive though (it's just mounds and pits that invert over time). I've noticed that waves always have a direction they're travelling in and if they're met with other waves, they eventually slow down and fade away. The water looks fantastic but the sky has too much dynamic range of aiming for photorealism (although you could say it was shot on a phone with HDR I guess)

I would love to use it for architecture and print reading as well as some medical Concepts maybe snap some photos of actual cadavers this is working so many different ways CSI, possibly. What is the name of the music playing near the end when they are in the wooden area.

Pretty soon you can make a full-length feature film without any cameras or actors. All you need is the software and high-end hardware.

Imagine in the future when full dive VR really invented, and then combined with these kind of graphic. They perhaps can't distinguish between real world and Virtual world anymore.

All the people criticising this work have zero understanding of just how impressive this is. If some of this was in a movie, it will be impossible to notice that it's graphics.

Do UE4 scenes really count, as they are photo scanned and the lighting is baked specifically for the view angle?

I swear 10 years from now, video games will have graphics like this and it will look so realistic that you wont be able to tell the difference from that and real life

So pretty soon, graphics in video games won't be the issue anymore. What's EA going to do if they actually have to create a compelling story again? xD

Graphics in video games aren't an issue for quite some years, they have been looking more than good enough to convey what they want to portray... good A.I. and the handling of large amounts of npcs and a good game design are still the main issues imo

+Ali Amirdivan As much as I dislike EA's business practices, saying that they don't have graphics is just simply not true. Battlefield, Battlefront, and even Anthem have some of the best graphics in gaming.

I could tell most of the images were games or rendered, not because the graphics aren't up-to-par, but because I look at things like the sky and the background, as well as catch the movement of foliage in the wind normally. The illusion was easily broken in all of the images with foliage and clouds because the clouds weren't moving and neither was the foliage. But good lord I can only imagine what insane levels of graphics will come when those issues are addressed...

For outdoor scenes, the one thing that gives it away is in my opinion, the fact that it looks too "clean". Also notice that on any scenes with soils, we can't spot any insects like ants, etc. which looks completely unnatural.

anyone here knowledgeable enough to give me an idea of what kind of workstation computer did they used to render or produce these kind of CGI scenes? is the AMD threadreapper 32 core cup and a Nvidia RTX Quadro 6000 24gb or Nvidia RTX Quadro 8000 48gb be enough for this kind of intense workflow in these 3D applications? especially the 2 scenes where it showcase the mountains at 6:00 and the ocean simulation scene. i've always wanted to do this kind of work but it always seem like the tech for this job is too intense for our regular consumer computer we use daily so anyone actually done it knows? thanks.
