Walker said he was inspired to write the song after an encounter with a street performer in a New Orleans jail. While in jail for public intoxication in 1965, he met a homeless man who called himself "Mr. Bojangles" to conceal his true identity from the police. Mr. Bojangles had been arrested as part of a police sweep of indigent people that was carried out following a high-profile murder. The two men and others in the cell chatted about all manner of things, but when Mr. Bojangles told a story about his dog, the mood in the room turned heavy. Someone else in the cell asked for something to lighten the mood, and Mr. Bojangles obliged with a tap dance. The homeless "Mr. Bojangles", who was white, had taken his pseudonym from Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (1878-1949), a Black entertainer. (Wikipedia).

Sammy Davis jr. Adored this song! He'd actually "Become" Mr. Bojangles onstage, Tap Dancing and doing the Soft Shoe while Singing. I know you don't really do many "Repeats" or Covers of songs you've already reacted to, but this one time you owe it to yourselves to do it! SO Wonderful!

Good suggestion. Sammy Davis Jr. was a force of nature. An entertainer like that is almost extinct. He could dance, sing tell jokes, play drums, tell stories, a member of the famous Rat Pack along with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, they ruled Las Vegas, and TV variety shows for decades.
@redveston

Yup. Do Sammy Davis Jr's version. Bigger production, yes. But, most important fact is that Sammy Davis Jr cut his teeth singing and dancing in the old vaudeville circuit and learned much from the original Bill Bojangles (his stage name) Robinson as first posted at the top. You can also look up scenes of Bojangles dancing with Shirley Temple (child actress and biggest box office draw of the great depression erra.) Davis loved loved Bojangles and it shows in his performance. Yes. Do it.

This is a standard country/ Texana song. It's based on a true story of Jerry Jeff meeting Bojangles when they were in a county jail in New Orleans. When I was at Texas A&M University we used to joke that they wouldn't allow you to graduate unless you attended 2 Jerry Jeff and 3 Robert Earl Keen, Jr. concerts!

Jim Stafford's is the definitive one for me because of his spoken lines as Bojangles. He added some extra lines that adds a lot of heavy emotion with how Bojangles not only misses his dog (Spotty) but also wouldn't want his dog to see him as he is now - basically a down on his luck drunk.

I was in college at SUNY New Paltz in 1983 and took a course named American Novel. The Prof brought a guitar in one class and started talking about his life growing up in the south. He said he and a friend hitchhiked around the south when he was in his early teens. He said despite them both being underage, they'd play roadhouses all over the south. He said his partner would tell him he wanted to someday write a song that everyone would know and remember. The Prof then said, "And this was the song he ended up writing" and started the chords to Mr. Bojangles.

I'm so glad you did this version. JJW was an original. Though he was from up in northern New York, he was huge in the Austin songwriter scene. An early member of the Outlaw movement, he had several big hits of his own. London Homesick Blues, LA Freeway (written by Guy Clark, another great songwriter), Railroad Lady, Don't It Make You Wanna Dance, and my favorite for personal reasons, Desperados Waiting For A Train. So sad to see he passed in 2020 along with the likes of Billy Joe Shaver, Mac Davis, and Doug Supernaw.

Great song! Listened to a lot of his music in the mid 70’s and he was a wild character heavily into whiskey and drugs! At a 1978 outdoor concert in Tulsa with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and a couple other groups, he was so drunk he couldn’t finish his first song and almost fell off the stage when his band mates and security ushered him off the stage and his act was over! Cleaned himself up in 1980.

Revisiting the music of the 60's thru part of the 90's is a blessing that I will always treasure. Back when music was music, singers and musicians were artists first and then entertainers. The version performed by Jim Stafford is, to me, the hands down best version, titled Mr. Bojangles / A Visit With An Old Friend. A rare instance where the cover is more emotional than the original. Stafford actually does part of it singing and part of it spoken - the spoken is actually being spoken in a higher pitch and breaking voice as Bojangles himself. Stafford adds a lot of emotion with a few etra lines of "Bojangles" talking about his dog, Spotty. Er now I dance every chance I can, down to the honky tonk You know maybe for drinks or tips But most of my time I spend right here 'hind these county bars Eh you see I drinks a bit But there was a time, was there a time New suits and dancing shoes, one day we'd be here, next day we may be anywhere Me and little Spotty, we seen it all I wonder why it is that a dog don't get to live too long But he still has to die old I reckon just as well 'cause I wouldn't want little Spotty to see me like I am now anyway But you know something mister? I sure do miss that old dog Stafford manages to sound like a completely different person on the verge of crying during this spoken segment and it adds to the picture. Bojangles is in this little jail cell and it's bringing everyone down getting emotional in his grief for Spotty, so someone asks him to dance to cheer up the mood. I always grew up with the Nitty Gritty Band's version, and Jerry Jeff Walker is the original, but Jim Stafford's is the only one I enjoy now because of that extra emotion, though it's hard to get through if you're a dog lover. 20 years on, he still grieves...

Jim Stafford is the best version for me by a mile. The spoken lyrics as Bojangles on the verge of tears and lamenting not only the loss of Spotty, but how he wouldn't want his beloved dog to see him as he is now; Stafford manages to put the feelings of grief and shame in the voice. He adds a little about how things were different with Spotty and laments why dogs don't live a long time, but still have to die old. It's heavy and someone asking Bojangles to dance is a way to get him to distract himself, entertain them, and lighten the mood. Breaks my heart listening to Stafford's version.

I don't think Sammy wrote songs. Anyway, this song is by Jerry Jeff, and Sammy did indeed record it.

The story is part truth, part story. Bill Robinson was known as Bojangles which may or may not be a derisive term. He was a great tap dancer who entertained audiences between the 1880's thru the 1940's. He is probably best remembered today as being Shirley Temple's dance partner from her movies in the 1930's. The significance of that is they were the first interracial dance partners recorded on film. Check out the film clip "the Little Colonel" with Shirley Temple/Bill Robinson. He would have been in his mid 50's when this was filmed. As far as Mr. Walker meeting Bojangles in jail is just story telling. Mr. Walker would have been about 6 when Bill Robinson passed away.
