I bet it may be that if they are pushed to grow faster by giving them more fertilizer and water so they can get to market quicker. It could impact the brix (sugar) level of the watermelon.

Ok. So I was using rain water to put on my garden. One barrel had been used to store iodine in it at one time. Long story short, because watermelon is so sensitive, the flesh both smelled and tasted like iodine. Yuck! The tomatoes turned out fine but that barrel had to go.

I know this is a very old comment but it's relevant. Seedless watermelons can grow a mature seed but usually just 1 per melon and the melon has to be left on the vine till fully ripe, on watermelon farms where the grocery store gets their supply from they harvest some watermelons a bit less ripe than others. Once I learned all the tricks of checking for a ripe watermelon I was able to choose the sweetest watermelon I've ever had and it had 1 single seed that went straight into the ground and it grew, so I bought another one and that one too had a single mature seed. From there I learned about how you must plant a seeded variety next to it and cross pollinate them for fruit to grow. Well I did that and I currently have 3 seedless watermelons growing bigger by the day along with a few sugar baby melons I use to pollinate them, the way. It's pretty exciting stuff really.

Lea Eder hope that you never will, the flesh is a light pink to a mild red along with the flavor suffering substantially to a point it's about half as sweet and sometimes unpleasantly tart or a bit sour, they also seem to be smaller side by side to their superior counterpart with seeds in them.( all last summer i ate 1 watermelon a week and my entire life I've been entheusastic about watermelon)

Huge difference. One uses techniques to invade cells with genetic data from an outside life source not related to the invaded cells and the invader genes could have never got into the host without this manipulation. The other uses a chemical trick to change the count of chromosomes, then mating with a similar or same species, meaning no foreign gene data in the outcome.
