Searches on the internet asking "Why Are People Leaving Florida" are trending up. This begs the question, is it really that bad?
It's no secret that more people have moved to Florida over the past four years than to any other state besides Texas. But why are more people than normal deciding to leave Florida?
Is it the cost of living, climate, weather, insurance, property taxes, politics, education, and culture?
Today, we'll discuss why people move to Florida, why some are forced to leave their homes in the Sunshine State, and why others are just choosing to leave.
If you're considering relocating and buying a home in Florida, we'd love to guide you through the process.
If you're considering selling your home and leaving the Sunshine State, know you're not alone. And we would love to be your real estate team of choice.

@@ent1311 HOA fees and lot rent that has no limit. If you buy a condo, the HOAs have come up with astronomical fees because of insurance and improvements they neglected. You don't pay and they take your property. (Thank you to Rick Scott for making that possible.) Many of 55+ communities seem affordable, especially the manufactured housing, but the lot rent is already over $1,000 / month with no limit. You are better off being a snowbird and renting for a while. The Republican Florida legislature does nothing because they are too busy making "morality" laws.

No fire sale and it is far different than 2007/2008. WHY, because condo fees have doubled and tripled, insurance costs have gone through the roof, repairs and reserves on most buildings are out of control so no real estate agents are willing to say that if you think you need $1500 a month then double the money to meet all the other expenses so you actually need $3000. I had no mortgage and I was priced out of my condo just because of the huge increase in condo fees, insurance, repairs, and taxes, huge. Just moved to Europe at 73 years old since USA is out of control.

I left Florida (Tampa Bay) 4 days ago after living there for 27 years & only regret not doing it sooner. You hit the nail on the head with the 80% increase in home values since 2018. In Pinellas County, you can't find a decent home for under $300k. Couple that with flood insurance, and it's not worth it for most people. Those who come to Florida and think the beaches are clean and empty find out quickly that it is crowded as hell, especially on weekends and holidays.

Lived in Florida from 1962 to 2020, when I relocated to another state. I will never return to Florida! It was once a truly wonderful place to live, not anymore. As for estate tax the IRS tax only kicks in when an individual leaves $13 million+. Just check the state you want to move to, to see if they have an estate/inheritance tax. Florida is too crowded, roads are like parking lots, people have grown increasingly nasty, taxes and insurance costs are ludicrous. And frankly after all those years I got tired of preparing for hurricanes every year and yes, I went through way too many on the East coast. Took my state paid pension, Social Security and 457 account and am enjoying spending it elsewhere!

A brother-in-law who used to live in Tampa moved to a Del Webb community in Middle Georgia last year, for the reasons you mentioned. He retired and didn't need to live in the Tampa area any more, so he wanted a place with a slightly more moderate climate and less traffic-clogged. He is nice, but snooty. When he visited my place in the rural Florida lake country 20 years ago, he complained about how "backward" it was, because none of the three taverns in town had a Philadelphia Flyers hockey game on he wanted to see. He never came back. The Del Webb community he lives in now happens to be built on land my deceased mother grew up in on the 1930s during the Great Depression. Her father was a dairy farmer. To annoy the brother-in-law, I asked him if there were any cows on the property for him to milk.

@@trulivingtampa I know there is a lot of value in Anna Maria. It's very unique in a lot of ways and extremely beautiful. I guess by reasonable I would say this: I get the market has gone up since covid. But I feel it has peaked. There are many houses 3, 4, 5 etc times asking prices / values of 3 years ago. I think that is unreasonable. Yes something is worth what someone will pay for it. But imo it's not realistic of actual value. Maybe we won't see big reductions in asking prices (would be nice tho), but maybe cash will become more and more valueable and have a little more power as time goes on. Some prices are just not worth what they ask. Time will tell I guess.

It completely depends on your "ideal lifestyle." If you're planning on buying an average priced or luxury home, savings, investments, travel, entertainment, etc. The news articles all say somewhere from $100k-$120k. I feel like that's pretty close. You can do it for less too, but you'd be grinding it out. Hope this help

I live in Tulsa, OK and have MS. I cannot take our sweltering summer heat here and very recently found out that Florida is actually COOLER than us mostly. I also cant handle extreme cold and cannot walk on snow and ice anymore and looking for mild early fall-like temperatures. Please explain what hot is to the ateas in Florida such as Cape Coral over to the Orlando suburbs. What is the typical "feels like" temperatures frim July-Sept? I am starting to believe its STILL lower than where I am at. I desperately need some natural vitamin D and fresh air. I feel like I am dying here in Oklahoma! My job is remote anyway. And we have a huge growing base in Flirida, mainly around MCO. It would be perfect for me in that regard. And honestly, if its only 2-3 months I need to stay inside, it sure beats half the year around here where I am.

I am on east coast and I see those renting leave because they can't afford the rent. As a realtor you aren't seeing them go as they have nothing to sell. People who own homes can afford to stay as long as mortgages are reasonable. My place has over doubled in value, my family's home has I believe, tripled. Thank goodness for homestead exemption. That said most of our neighboring properties are now owned in LLC's and are income properties renting by the month. I am talking 2 bedroom condos for 6 grand a month while average jobs gross about half that. I literally have coworkers that live in their cars, RVs in Walmart lots or the Beach parking at night while the place next door to me sits empty in off season because the LLC owner up north would rather have it empty than rent for less than 4 grand a month. These are people are making 40K or more and homeless. So many landlords want Airbnb daily rate for rent so its 3-4K a month. It's unaffordable for many. 7 years ago you could annual rent for 1500, seasonal was 3-4 grand. I am from the northeast and I did like many, sold and bought in budget here. If I didnt I would be asking coworkers where they park and showering at a 24 hour gym. Rent is NY prices and wages are less than half. Intrest rates up so buying power down but cash buyers can still buy so prices are still up. It squeezes out most working class buyers. Oh and buyers that dont plan to be residents get sticker shock when tax bill comes as it could double or triple or more what listing showed for last resident owner, homesteaded for 15 years. Almost a decade here, I have lived both coasts, it's been an education for sure.

Every academic program is top of the line. Bright futures is good, but it does have conditions like you mentioned. I realize that the “blue” states have better doctors and dentists and music scenes than FLORIDUH. Your state spawned the Hell of music aka Boy Bands/the careers of Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Creed and Limp Bizkit. Enough said. Plus going to concerts and sporting events and getting into fights with drunks and locals was enough. Only friends I made and left me to shop in peace were the equestrian people who were in Wellington for the Winter Equestrian Festival and I joked about the beautiful women getting away with wearing tall riding boots and breeches in public and they were all not snooty but quite friendly and surprisingly nice and polite and let me shop in peace and joked with me about being a walking advert for Nike shirts, shorts and sneakers. Some of the competitors were there for the winter months but others were locals. If you sell here you are just replacing that equity in a similar home with higer interest rate. We are blessed to live where others vacation. LfG!
