“The US ambassador to the Netherlands faced an excruciating moment on television when he denied ever saying that there were no-go zones in the Netherlands, calling the suggestion “fake news”.
Trump’s new choice for ambassador, Pete Hoekstra, who was only sworn in by the vice president, Mike Pence, on 11 December, was being interviewed for current affairs programme Nieuwsuur by reporter Wouter Zwart.
Zwart says: “You mentioned in a debate that there are no-go zones in the Netherlands, and that cars and politicians are being set on fire in the Netherlands.”
Hoekstra replies: “I didn’t say that. This is actually an incorrect statement. We would call it fake news.”
Hoekstra is then shown clips of him saying: “The Islamic movement has now gotten to a point where they have put Europe into chaos. Chaos in the Netherlands, there are cars being burnt, there are politicians that are being burnt ... and yes there are no-go zones in the Netherlands.”
Challenged about having called this “fake news”, Hoekstra then went on to deny to Zwart that he had in fact used the phrase “fake news”.
“I didn’t call that fake news. I didn’t use the words today. I don’t think I did.”
Hoekstra, who was born in Groningen in the Netherlands, was a Republican Congressman for Michigan between 1993 and 2011, and served as chair of the House intelligence committee for two years during that time.”

I just came back from living in The Netherlands for a year. Everyone is incredibly friendly regardless of race, creed or ideology and this ambassador is just trying to peddle the fear that puts people like Trump in charge. I'm also from London and have spent a lot of time in Birmingham....can confirm that no go zones don't exist, just lots of nice people who don't necessarily share the same skin colour or religion as a white christian. America's view of Europe is totally off

It really is. I left to go to the Netherlands just after the Brexit vote and I was just amazed at just how much our own politicians had lied to the vast majority of our people (who can't afford to travel and who largely have never been to Europe) and had made them turn all of their just anger about their lives, on a union of countries who largely have nothing to do with it, and who's societies are in alot of ways, better than our own.

Absolutely. I lived in Birmingham for about 20 years and still visit there occasionally. I've never once given a thought to what neighborhood I'm walking through or felt unsafe anywhere. Our police don't carry guns because they don't need them. Simple as that. Trump's propaganda is playing on the xenophobic fears of the uneducated poor to bolster his political standing and as long as that keeps working he doesn't care what it does to America's world position.

Couldn't agree more. My friend just moved to London but his family still lives in Hansworth (supposedly one of the most dangerous areas in Bham) and I still visit. I feel safer there than I would anywhere where a man who could have just lost his job and had his wife cheat on him....can roam the streets freely with a Glock in his pocket

The only amazing part of this segment, from late December 2017, is that journalists, reporters and others charged with the task of speaking truth to power, have not equipped themselves with the ammunition, whether it's in the form of hardware or follow up questions, to hold those in power to account. It is simply not enough for a reporter to ask a question, have that question answered untruthfully and then attempt to hold the answerer to account 'in post'. It doesn't matter if it's a dude working for NOS in Holland or Jim Acosta in the press briefing room or Joy Reid talking to a Brady Bunch grid of loudmouthed, brainless frauds like "Pastor" Mark Burns. The liars must be held to account on the spot.

I think this both ludicrous absurd and extremely serious at the same time. As an example of human stupidity and duplicity this Hoekstra is so obvious in what he's doing that it is tragically comic. But as an ambassador, Hoekstra has just made it very clear that he is completely and utterly untrustworthy. Should any diplomatic incident occur, nobody, and I mean nobody, in the Netherlands will trust a word this man says. He has permanently branded himself a complete liar in the eyes of entire nation. And has tarnished US state department as whole while he was at it. If the US is willing to send out representatives who are known liars (and nor recall them) then that will start to erode trust in other ambassadorial appointees.

Exactly... we feel out of professional courtesy and giving the air of unbiased news reporting, that we must give all sides... but does that happen on the other side? Hell no.. What happened to investigative reporting on all of these news outlets? They're merely being talking overly makeup TV heads.. If instead of continually calling out lies and rerolling tapes, there could've been more investigative reporting into candidates that would've fielded much better candidates, two years ahead of (1 yr ahead of primaries) elections.

Kara: We spent way too long and too much resources on exposing lies as opposed to really digging into a candidates fitness for office. It was a long, drawn out dog and pony show that upended our democracy.. It was akin to masses of people being entranced by and not being able to stop watching Trump's antics.. The result was his attracting certain elements.. meanwhile, the real news should've been these nasty methods of depressing certain groups of voters. Elderly, black and other minorities, and youth who were away at college in a different state.The very ones who are likely to vote democratic to protect their civil rights, to protect their Social Security, and protect their ability to receive college educations.

Perhaps there's something near Culemborg...didn't they have a shooting-incident there, yéááárs ago? I mean, to be fair, there was óne incident, back then. Well even in Holland there are a few shoot outs in some places but never anything that concerns the whole country. The biggest violent thing that happened that I know of and is important to a lot of people in Holland is when a few people put their tractors on the high way to keep protesters from getting to their destination. Holland is a small country, I think that if there was a place in Holland that was so dangerous with burning cars and guns that its recommended that no one goes there for their own safety that we would've known about that.

I live in the Netherlands. There are no no-go zones. Nobody is on fire. The police do an amazing job at being even-handed and at being still very effective fighting crime of all sorts, including terrorism.

It is gobsmacking for most of us outside of the US and I don't get why interviewers in the US seem to accept it and move on to the next thing after one or two half arsed attempts at pointing out the lie. It just doooooon't add up! Politicians lie at times but they used to waffle, answer a completely different question that wasn't asked or deflect to a different talking point if cornered. That's still their usual tactic in Australia. Now, however, in the US they just deny saying it even when shown the footage or audio of them saying whatever it was they lied about. They're not fooling anyone - so why?

but you just saw a Nederlandse journalist being stunned the same way a US journo would. The problem here is that he has many ways to extricate himself from this situation . either run away and not accept interviews anymore or yell at the journo. It is much harder to hold these people accountable than you think.

The US really needs to instate ethical laws for Government and Representatives. It also needs to raise the bar and criteria for these positions. I feel that each candidate should be placed through a standardized test that shows that they understand both the socioeconomic climate of this nation, and the true facts on each of these issues. The bar is too low at the moment with no consequence for lying or not being transparent.

The Dutch should quietly request Hoekstra depart the country. He can use any excuse he wants such as ill health or the desire to spend more time with his family. If Hoekstra declines to go quietly, the Dutch can declare him persona non grata and expel him. There was a day when the U.S. would pull him, but those days are no longer--but one day will return.

Remember that the U.S. Senate confirmed Hoekstra by voice vote. Apparently Dutch journalists can discover Hoekstra's remarks, but the Senate was apparently unable to discover these remarks before giving him pro forma approval. I wonder who else might have slipped by.
