democracynow.org - The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has opened an investigation into President Trump for fraud and tax evasion following a major exposé by the New York Times revealing that Trump inherited nearly half a billion dollars of his family’s wealth through tax dodges and outright fraud. New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio has also called for a city probe, and Democratic Senator Ron Wyden has urged the IRS to investigate the president. The Times’ 13,000-word investigative report found the late Fred and Mary Trump transferred more than $1 billion in wealth to their children, paying less than 5 percent of the $550 million in taxes they should have paid under inheritance tax rates. Donald Trump also helped his parents undervalue real estate holdings by hundreds of millions of dollars on IRS tax returns in order to reduce taxes. We speak with David Barstow, three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for The New York Times and the lead author on the new investigation, “Trump Engaged in Suspect Tax Schemes as He Reaped Riches From His Father.” Barstow shares a byline with Susanne Craig and Russ Buettner.

The IRS is too busy auditing single mothers who earn a mere 11,000/year, well under the Federal poverty level, even after said single mother had a professional accountant agency file for her, so she would't make an error. There were no "expense" deductions, just simple Earned Income Credit and Child Tax Credit. The IRS includes in their auditing demands rent reciepts for the year, School records for the year, AND In a GROSS violation of HIPPA laws - Child Medical Records (immunizations do NOT count), PLUS proof of the absent parent's whereabouts! Of course rich pukes like Deep State Dahn and his Reptilpukelicon fiends get to rob us blind, the IRS is too busy attacking the destitute!

It's the same in Canada, sad to say. CRA (our IRS) constantly auditing working stiffs, single mothers, looking the other way while millionaires use loopholes. It's too hard for them to do otherwise - much easier to justify your job by looking busy, asking someone to produce a receipt for a wrench, when you own and operate a garage... The thing a lot of Americans and Canadians forget seems to be, the reason we have these estate/inheritance taxes (55% - Oh My God!!!) is because the original settlers here left Europe, with its kings and queens.... and dukes, and earls, and lords. Those people owned all the land, and passed it on to their kids. Creating dynasties, and countries where no-one could ever get out of poverty. Or even own an acre of land. Rich people don't want to pay taxes on their estates because they want to create new dynasties. If Donnie Jr. and Little Eric and Baby Ivanka have to lose half of their Daddy's supposed 10 billion or so, which he shouldn't even have because Freddie should have also lost half - i.e. returned it to the state, but didn't - too frickin' bad. Are we all supposed to cry because say when DJT and his sibs inherited say a billion from Fred, they might legitimately only have inherited 500 mil? Poor them!!!

@Z.F.A. The problem is tax law loopholes. For example, the reporter said Fred Trump overpaid himself to dodge taxes. It is quite similar to how you pay taxes when you register a car. You tell them the value (how much you bought it for), and get taxed on that value. But in that case, you can't high or lowball it too much, since it is checked against KBB value. It's pretty suspicious that something similar is not present for this kind of purchases.

MarlysThoreen --- He did say that, but in the actual print article he also writes that the majority of tax savings came from the legal GRAT method. He also writes that "the line between legal tax avoidance and illegal tax evasion is often murky", meaning our tax enforcement is very lax and vague, presumably by design.

He says in the article the savings from likely fraud were "trivial when compared" to the legal GRATs, and in multiple paragraphs he mentions how common the dishonest Trump-style dealings are in New York business circles . For example, the man who helped the Trumps under-value their properties in filings is a popular lawyer who has helped numerous prominent people over almost 50 years.

I lost my job three years ago, and since then, I haven’t been able to recover. I am currently making ½ of what I used to make. I was obligated to use and stretch my 401k $22,000 for more than two years in order to pay for food, rent and all the expenses associated with a family of four until I finally run out. For every single dollar I took from that account, I was obligated to pay the federal government 10% and even though I was not obligated to pay state tax, I didn’t want to get in trouble and sometimes I contributed with up to 9 percent to my state. I was audited last year and my refund was delayed for more than half a year because the IRS didn’t get a form from me, the same form they got from the financial institution handling my 401k showing that I had $22,000 in an account since 2015. I needed that refund money to pay bills and after many calls and visits to the IRS’ web site, I finally got my check. The federal and state government decides to investigate a family of four that takes home less than $60,000 a year but skips cheaters like Donald Trump and his family that commits all kinds of frauds. I guess, anyone can build and maintain an empire for years if the IRS becomes complicit in that enterprise.

That is what has been happening to me at jewels. I got a gallon of milk the other day for 3.75. it turns out the full gallon only cost .50 cents. so they took that and increased the price a little over 550% Then you have my home. built for 28,000 but the local county government says its worth 190,000. that’s an increase of over 600% but they don’t realize the house is 30 years old and instead of depreciation they charge me taxes on the 190,000. Point is they do this everyday around every turn and only call it legal when the government gets its cut. I can fault Trump for so many thing from lies to just being stupid. But family money should have nothing to do with government. he should be accountable if he took more money from his renters but not for family wealth. If people wanted to fix these kinds of issues they would have a flat tax of 40% for the rich 30% middle and 20% low income families based off the current cost of living. this would drive inflated cost down and alleviate the local state cost. divide that % income verses the population of that state. then places like NY or Chicago would have to raise money verses just raising taxes on the whole state verses the local people. and the government would see a lot more money being the top 2% make more than the other 98% combined.

Why would you look up to them? Some of the seem be honest, and most of them not. I pay my share of taxes, don't you?

That family stole enough money to build a wall around each one, if the walls were 8 billion that he wanted. That’s why he wanted so much, some for him to pocket with his greed little hands.
