Americans are religiously and profoundly touched by Donald Trump’s honesty, his raw ability to show his true vulnerability in a mental chaotic state. His honest expression of his deep deep human pain plain for all to see. His self-fixated confusion and emotional pain brings a strange resonance for 35% of folks. With his dark ability to override all concerns toward life, with lack of empathy for all, and his love of destruction. His need for control, attention, his raw admission of bad intent for many, his over compensation for feelings of lack, shame and rage (covered over) yet...expressed outwardly with endless greed for money, attention, power, and immoral criminality.

We, in NZ, are very happy with our governments management of the pandemic. (And Jacinda Ardern was re-elected last month. in a landslide) We had a 4 Level lockdown plan... driven by medical experts and supported by the government. It wasn’t without challenges and issues but these were addressed/corrected as they were identified. The tourism/hospitality industry was the worst hit but Kiwis have come out in support of them... “support local”. We have QR codes on display at every business/meeting place, to aid contact tracing, if any Covid is identified. We have had 25 deaths in total... all arrivals into the country (eg: citizens or approved visitors) must go into hotel quarantine for 2 weeks. It’s been tough but we are back to a degree of normality albeit without the level of foreign visitors we had before. While it’s more difficult for larger countries, I can’t identify any step we have taken, that wouldn’t be possible anywhere. It just takes leadership... and admittedly, citizens that can band together for the good of the country. Politics are not a factor. Good luck America... you have taken the 1st step to rejoining the international community but huge challenges lay ahead. Kia kaha

Steve Urwin... Even Peter Jackson is a part of New Zealand now... Just to name a few :) Sorry you think its a competition... We're willing to share. All you have to do is get the Coronavirus under control too... To do that...All you have to do is listen to the experts and pull your finger out of your bum for a few weeks, like the NZ'ers did and you, too, could have a life ... Best of luck, whichever way you decide...

Hi from New Zealand. Thank you guys for accurate reporting what is really going on in NZ. Laura Ingraham recently falsely claimed we had quarantine "Camps" & are now a Fascist nation? much to the amusement & outrage of some Kiwis. My son recently returned home to NZ from London, he was immediately bused from the airport to a 4.5-star Hotel close by, where he spent 2 weeks in quarantine with a private room, TV, Internet, 3 hotel delivered meals a day, was able to walk around the grounds for air & exercise. After 2 clear COVID tests, he was able to safely come home without fear of infecting his grandmother or anyone else. All paid for with Gvnt funds. Our boarders are still mainly closed & returning NZers must quarantine for 2 weeks. We had only 1 death in our 2nd wave & are back to normal again. I wish you all the best & am sure Biden will listen to the scientists & begin the consolidated effort needed to fight this virus. Good Luck :)

Laura Ingram, Hannity, Tucker Carlson, was found by a court of law not to be news, but entertainment. Think of when the WWE was called the WWF (World Wrestling Federation). They were forced to change the name, cause it was entertainment, not an actual sport. Fox News should go completely under the Fox Entertainment umbrella. As for NZ being a fascist nation!!! Of course Laura Ingraham would say you fascists, because you immediately Jacinda (we buds) and your government banned guns (sure it's not total) after your countries most horrific right wing terrorist attack. Of course you guys are fascist. As for your son staying in a 4/5 star hotel for 2 weeks. All I'll say is welcome back sir. You made it 🤣. I'm a South African, and I'm tired of hovering around the 1300 infections per day, and 30 to 40 deaths per day for weeks, forcing to wear masks, and not being able to go have crowds at stadiums. We rightfully out of Super Rugby, and the Rugby Championship. Maybe you guys can go back to calling it the Tri Nations.

If you need a semi-automatic machine gun to hunt dear or Boar, then you are a very bad shot & should not be shooting any gun including water pistols. @@madamelebuff Insights, maybe more like envy. If we could have a half competent government we could've saved so much jobs, and be able to open up. Truth be told this corrupt ANC government broke this country before covid got here. Covid appears to be just the final nail. On a side note, my best friend growing up immigrated to NZ with his family 15/18yrs ago. We were born in the same year on the exact same day, in the same state hospital (when they worked properly). My family home that I live in today (returned home cause my parents died), is exactly opposite that very friends family home. Zero new cases and zero deaths. We huckered down and did the hard yards, and now we're reaping the rewards. All because our leader, like Jacinda, said screw that, let's nip this in the bud... @O R .... the death rate isnt the only consideration, a country sick with COVID-19 with health services not able to cope is a recipe for disaster. I have no idea why you people keep harping on about the death rate. Plus another consideration is long term health issues that can develop after COVID-19, some extremely serious requiring lung transplants etc. We prefer to have a healthy population and look after every New Zealander the best we can, we never thought in terms of who was expendable, thank God.

As life for us has returned to normal after a 5 week lockdown, we are working, back at school, filling sports stadiums I dont believe we will ever have to make that decision of who will live or die, never ever. We also have an electoral system that means that gerrymandering wouldn't work (and the lines are drawn by a non-partisan commission). We can also go to the hospital for free. Prescription drugs cost $5 with annual cap (or free after first 20 prescriptions per family per year). She fostered the notion that all kiwis were part of the "Team of 5 Million" and that was the only way to win - if we all acted as one team. AND so long as we all put aside our disputes and disagreements with each other and showed empathy for our tem mates regardless of their position in the team. But hey, getting people to follow a leader - even when they strongly disagree on political philosophy - requires someone at the helm who unselfishly wants the best for the people she leads.

Excellent post, Martin. I live in the USA and know only too well the path this virus can take when the nation's "leader" does not rally the troops, does not support inclusion, and hasn't had an unselfish motive in his life. Covid will likely be with us for a year, give or take, AFTER Trump leaves office--and he's in no hurry to go even after losing the election. Congratulations to Jacinda and all you kiwis for getting the job done right.

Here in NZ we are still cautious. We still get cases of Corona, but these are people who are picked up at the border while in the compulsory 14 day quarantine. They are housed in hotels (not camps like some US Media reported) and are quite comfortable. Two friends who recently returned from the US said the only problem was getting their special diets (they are both athletes). However, as reported, community transmission is not a thing here anymore (despite a couple of slip-ups). This means we can enjoy going out to sports events etc. When I see reports of Americans refusing to wear a mask because it infringes their "rights", I think what selfish, ignorant people they are. In a lock-down (ours was 5 weeks at level 4) all one had to do was stay home and practice social distancing, wear a mask in public etc. Its not like we were being asked to storm the Normandy beaches or anything...it was relatively easy. If Americans can be united for 5-6 weeks only with a nation-wide lockdown you can beat community transmission and get things under control. Yes, the economy will take a hit, but if you don't act, there will be no one left to run the economy; get your priorities right, put people before money.

Having lived in the U.S most of my life, in nearly a dozen different states and having lived overseas in another half dozen, I am quite sure we would never have come close to New Zealand's results here. Why? Because no matter who is president and no matter what he (or hopefully/someday SHE?) says, you will always have large numbers of people who believe they know more/better than the authorities (scientific or otherwise). After all, we currently have a large number of anti vaxxers. We still have people who won't wear a seatbelt. We still have a large number of people who smoke. We still have people who make their kids wear bicycle helmets...but don't think there is a reason for them to use them. More than any other country that I have yet visited, the U.S. has many people that are obstinate and contrary and willfully avoid doing what is good for them.

Sadly, trump supporters hate the US. They don't care that 237,000 Americans died in just 8 months, more than the 17months we were in WW1 and more than the 45 months we were in WW2. This just show a complete hate for the US. They think freedom means they get what they want and F' everyone else.

@@bobbydazzler329 You are confusing personal responsibility with reckless behavior. You are free to buy a gun but your are not free to go randomly shooting in in public places. So if you want to risk getting sick that would be your choice if you only get yourself sick but those that went to trump rallies over 30,000 people got infected and transmitted it to others who chose not to go to the rallies. Is that right? NO, you are shooting your gun off in public which is wrong. This "personal responsibility" excuse to act stupid is not a valid argument during a pandemic.

@jakobkodez The 230,000 Americans that died could have been saved if we had a president that cared. The fact that you seem to think there was nothing you should have done proves my point that people like you only care about yourselves. We do have proof that if we followed the science 99% of those that died from covid-19 didn't have to and we also could have saved the economy. SK, Taiwan, New Zealand, Vietnam, Australia, etc... The point is that this was preventable if we had a president that accepted science instead of denying it.

Here's the thing: Most folk think of New Zealand as some far-flung little island gracefully resting on its laurels in the South Pacific. NOT SO! Let's make a comparison with the US: by land area, we would be the 8th - yes the 8th - largest state in the US. By population, we'd be the 23rd most populous state in the US. So, don't be discouraged by those naysayers who think that only little teeny bits of land in far flung places can eradicate the virus. If a place that sits 8th in terms of land area, or 23rd in terms of population can do it, then so can the US!!!!

Taiwan did it, too. People smirked at their cardboard baseball "fans." But, hey, universal health care, contact tracing, wearing face masks religiously, mandatory quarantines for travelers and a manufacturing base for PPE -- and you too could stop a pandemic in six to eight weeks.
