I agree. Also, it is easily fact-checkable that Mexican cartels have infiltrated native American tribal lands. The largest drug bust in Montana history was on a reservation. The cartels are well known for giving ultimatums such as "take this money and keep your mouth shut or die", and this type of payoff scenario wouldn't exactly be "on the books", so pretty hard to prove. But, it doesn't seem like a ridiculous leap to me to consider that tribal leaders are taking payoffs to allow the cartels to operate. It fits the cartels MO perfectly, and taking the payoff would be the only way to keep them and their families alive. So I find the speculation to be valid. However, as you said, politicians have no real business spreading salacious rumors and here say and possibilities, even if they COULD be true.

With the track record of projection we've seen from Trump and his ilk, I think that any time a politician makes an accusation of wrongdoing, _they_ should be the first one to be investigated.
