Having been a journalist in a previous life (40+ years ago), I agree with Cenk. The schools teaching journalism are teaching that you have to give to sides of a story. Wrong! These schools are mixing up FCC rules during election processes with journalism. During an election, the FCC, which governs electronic media, states that you have to give two sides to a political speech or claim to make certain that both sides are being heard. By definition, political statements or speeches are slanted (editorialized) giving a positive light to a candidate or party. On the flip side, journalism (news) is reporting what is happening now or what has happened (facts). There is no alternative reality. It is what it is. I don't know why so many people can't tell the difference.

I think her point wasn't that people didn't know that's what he was doing, I think she was pointing out that he'd had the audacity to unashamedly and openly admit this to a journalist, especially just before a high profile interview.

Journalism should only be about what’s right and wrong. If the Republican is doing something correct, he or she deserves the credit. If not, the party deserves to be treated with negativity. Same goes for the Democrats.

I'm kind of feeling like the "Duh of course Trump is doing that" moment might unfortunately be shared with a large percent of Trump's followers where "Duh, of course it isn't about Principle, it's about 'Winning'", and the idea of us opening their eyes to the double standards or problems is like the media gasping at the story. It's something we know, but don't want to believe.

In the early days of black and white TV, the news was just reporting what happened and the people in their living rooms usually had little context and rare "connect the dots" commentary or "opinions" from political thinkers and historians. We should be more informed and more engaged with the improved information and thought of today's investigative journalism...but are we? Maybe folks are on overload because I meet more people these days who say they avoid the news (papers, internet, tv, radio) because it raises their blood pressure or stresses them out too much, etc. My guess is that if you know too much, you may need to act on your knowledge and/or folks know this is a bad place we are in right now and can't handle hearing about it. But we need to be engaged in what is going on with our country and the condition of our democracy. An informed citizenry protects themselves from going too far down the road away from our democratic values. Our democracy needs preservation and improvement ...not going towards autocracy and the tearing away at rule of law and common sense political norms. These trends are scary and concerning, but they won't keep me away from wanting to know... I commend true journalists for their efforts to keep citizens informed... now it is up to us to act upon that information. I heard that someone said he "loved the poorly educated"... we can do better. In the international edition of a recent New York Times, there was reportage about the 200 journalists in Italy who are on 24/7 police protection for threats they face reporting on the political connections with the mobsters controlling things there. Gave me a renewed sense of admiration for the work true journalists do. I remember reading about Sinclair Lewis and the "muckrakers" in school and got hooked on history and the news right then! I have heard it said that if "Everyone" was involved in just one issue of their choice in their communities... that would be the engagement true democracy needs to breathe. Many people are pushing that elephant up the stairs but we need "Everybody" to lend their weight and get informed.

With regards to the issue with the media calling things 50-50, worse yet I'd say is the impulse to celebrate the winner. For example the amount of articles that will cheerily note how Trump is making his base happy by "appointing conservatives justices", when he appoints partisans in robes who couldn't get an endorsement from the bar on 51-49 votes; this is nothing less than an attack on the independent judiciary, Republicans in general deserve to be shamed on this issue, not treated as winners. The worst one for me plays out when we hear talks about how the Republicans don't need to win the popular vote (or even come close) to get a majority. Rather than recognizing this as Republicans embracing minority rule as a strategy we instead get a shrug.

He's done that, and more, for decades. Nothing new, just fits the pattern.

I always go back to the AP story that ABSOLUTELY REFUSED to factually state that a raped women can get pregnant (even though they knew that in BC times and wrote about it in the bible) just because they didn't want to be seen as going against that Republican guy (I can't remember his name) who claimed it's impossible for rape to result in pregnancy. You could read the entire article coming away thinking that maybe women do, or maybe they don't, get pregnant from rape. It was just "He claims women can't, Democrats and scientists disagree."

I was a bartender in NY for 20 years and I gotta say, there is no difference between a Trump supporter and a Yankee fan. As an Angel's fan myself, I would wind up all of my Yankee fan customers for all match-ups, only to be stunned by their "fan-dom" (or as I liked to call it, their "fan-dumb"...). Yankee fans would ALWAYS ruthlessly cheer on their boys when they were winning...only to turn into giant (mean-spirited) babies when they weren't. Sound familiar?

I agree with their commentary: Journalists want to ensure their continued access to politicians so they regergetate each party's talking points instead of reporting facts that have been researched and carefully checked. Also, "journalists" will give equal time to each party's talking points in order not to offend viewers whih may hurt ratings. HOWEVER, I believe there is another reason journalists do not defend the facts... many main stream media outlets hire attractive news readers, not real journalists... the readers often lack the knowledge to call out, confront and correct politicians when they make false statements. They don't do the research, they don't know the facts! The main stream media needs to spend resources to do the research and fact checking so they are capable or fact checking those they interview... otherwise they are nothing more than readers.

That's what abusers tell kids to keep them quiet. Why is this behavior instinctive for him?
