You didn't suggest an alternative. Opera singers use entirely different muscles and methods and approaches to create and manipulate pitch. Opera singers don't use wind instrument techniques to perform, do they? You're a solid player man, but you can't discredit an approach without truly divulging the approach and explaining exactly why it is invalid. At most, it has flaws.

When speaking or singing, the pitch is adjusted by changing the vocal folds. Trumpet pitch is changed by the vibration frequency of the lips. The vowels change air compression because of different tongue positions: E = fast air (more compression) A = slow air (less compression)

My guy wasn't clear on whats being talked about, but its the optimal sound for the highest notes. He's describing jaw positions. Instead of narrowing down by using an o into an e Matt's saying that the legends use the wide Ahhh sound all lthe way up.

There are more ways to create pressure in the air column than by just changing the mouth shape. But tbh most of the pressure comes from the lips anyway.

I am in high school currently and Have never been told the vowel sound theory. For me I have always been told to use more air and relax. Or the one that worked the best for me was James stamp’s theory to think down

y’all.. the point of the open vowel shape is to have an open and wide sound, yes the mechanics are different but it allows for more airflow

Nah, you definitely need another vowel shape, but just don’t press onto the mouthpiece because that will strain you. Instead, practice scales and lip slurs that builds your range until you can get those high notes.

Oooh, please don’t put yourself out there as a subject matter expert, man. You’re misinterpreting what Wayne teaches… range is all about compression and air stream velocity. The VAST majority of high players, in fact, use a modification of their air stream to do that which is necessary to play high with a full tone. Even the venerable Mr. Bergeron. Describing it as an EE vowel may simply be an oversimplification of the tongue process. I’m far more inclined to listen to the teachings and methods of an Adam Rapa or a Bobby Shew than I am to discard their advice in favor of that from a player who cannot begin to approach their abilities. The arch of the tongue is raised to increase the velocity of the air stream and cause the lips to vibrate faster. You are a competent player, but you’re by no means, a top-tier legend. I’ll listen to Shew or Rapa for range advice, any day of the week… they clearly demonstrates what they teach… can you?

Hey homeslice! Starting out, I would strongly suggest sticking with the EEE syllable for a few years until you’re super good at navigating the trumpet high range. If you’re still curious, experimenting is a great idea! But focus on that eee shape for now
