Just to start, air flow has nothing to do with the valve alignment as the trumpet is an acoustic instrument. How the trumpet plays has to do with the vibration of the air inside. Have you seen our video about the no air flow mouthpiece we made? Misalignment of the valves causes a change in bore size entering and exiting each valve. 0.1mm or .004" on a Bb trumpet is about the smallest difference perceptive players will feel. In our experience there are certainly players that can feel and hear these differences. When the numbers start to get around .008" or 0.2mm even younger players will be able to tell a difference. As far as making recordings to compare the sound, it would be possible but very difficult to do. In differences that small it would have to be with a very controlled room and musician. The reality is that most trumpets are not out of alignment 0.1mm. Most trumpets we see are in the .010" to .040" (0.25mm to 1mm) range of misalignment, which has a significant affect on how the trumpet plays, and we commonly see misalignment numbers that are greater than that.

Hello, thank you for your comment! Unfortunately we only do alignments at our shop in California or when we are travelling on the road. We typically visit a few places in the US each year and one or two international trips as well. If you can't catch us when we are travelling, you can always ship your trumpet to us to have the alignment done.

You can order just the pads if we've aligned the horn already. Just replacing the pads will not align the horn and will likely make it worse.

Thanks for your insightful comment. While we haven't done an alignment for Louis Armstrong, Bob did make mouthpieces for him! We're not saying that the valve alignment will solve every problem for the rest of your life. What we do see on a daily basis is players having to compensate for misaligned valves. We have done alignments for Harry James, Doc Severinsen, Arturo Sandoval, Håkan Hardenberger, among thousands of others. While we don't claim to have made any of them the musicians they are, we are proud to have worked with them and hopefully helped them along the way.

@@bobreevesbrass That's good to hear. As much as I liked the info from the video, I did think a slight relativization was in order. Seems to me too often we blame our instruments or mouthpiece, instead of going the extra mile in practice. Taking my comment as graceful as you did raises my value in your opinion though, so thanks for taking the time to come back ;)

@@ibendiben That's a great mindset to have. There are certainly players that blame everything on their equipment and ignore fundamentals. There are also players that blame everything on themselves and ignore their equipment. In our experience, the most successful players combine solid fundamentals with equipment that helps them with their musical journey.
