This technique is the true bravery test. Ive had to pace around my backyard for a while to get hyped up to cut some branches off before. Id probably have to be drunk or something to have enough balls to try this 😂

Wow, I’m new to this channel, I love it. Jerome is clear, concise, gets on with the work, really knows his art and makes it so fascinating yet achievable. Inspiring. Bring it on.

Hi Jerome. I tried this technique last year just using cuts instead of wedges and it works really well on deciduous material (field maple and beech) and it can produce a lovely fairly tight smooth curve.

Now this one I can’t wait to see an update on. I saw others do this technique but it is scary! Good job Jerome.

i'd have done it one wedge at the time, big part of this technique is perfect coesion between layers. works good with pines because the dont really have "veins", in a juniper is better to open a shari and eat wood directly from the trunk

So glad you are trying it out , I have watched the video as well, if it was I , I would have cut a little deeper to bring the top underneath the hight of the bend , but who am I just my thoughts, Great video and really looking forward to updates . Thank you and happy new year from the UK .

Well I’m curious if it survives first, but I do like the design. Would look cool in the future in a similar design as the picture.

Ive seen that video and wanted to try that out also. But im glad u did 🤣 before me. Cant wait to see what happens. It would be a great technique for much larger trunks or ones that cant bend soo much. I think ive seen an old video with ryan neil doing severe bends like this but cant be sure.

Interested to see what will develop. It doesn't seem to me that it will fuse in a way that will look natural, I would expect to see a noticeable callous on the trunk. If it fuses nicely, I still think you can do the original design concept, you may need to get a large rock and grind out an area for the majority of the roots to go into, but I think it is doable.

I think it will. Big trees seem to handle more pruning and cuts.

The tree that you showed the technique being done on was a podocarpus in Taiwan. I’m not sure Alberta spruce is as high a water mobility tree as podocarpus, so it might not work as well. Also your cuts weren’t as deep as the demo tree’s. So that would be easier for the spruce to recover from. I’m interested in seeing how your experiment turns out. :)

You are right Bob, the tree in the video is a podacarpus. I choose the Alberta because it was standing around, time will tell I guess 🙂

It looks amazing. Nice change of plans in the middle of the process. It looked like you made significant less deep cuts than the exemple, maybe if you went deeper it would be more curvy, like you wanna. Anyway, congrats for the nice project and all your work. You're a power couple! Success!

Do you think it will work on a Chinese elm? Trunk area is about 1/2 thick ? Need a bend that may take 3 cuts.

so i have tried this 5 times on coniferious material , 3 survived , 2 did not , the ones that survived were in full sun and , i wrapped them in grafting tape then a bicycle innertube , i believe the heat generated from the black innertube helped in the healing , like black pots do with roots ,they did get like a reverse taper in that spot but filled out in the next year or so , anyway good luck , hope it works out

Update please, I feel that there are so many deep cuts to the main trunk that it might not heal and ultimately be the demise of the tree.

This technique is very commonly used in pines, junipers, ficus , and podocarpus. It is still alive and growing. It will take 1-2 years to show an update and see a change

There is no update yet. Things like this take time perhaps 1-3 years. Also, mulberry might not be a good candidate for this technique. However, pines and ficus are great

I did a "minor version" of this technique on the branch of my Juniper & Bougainvillea using a knife instead of a saw. So far none of the branch is dying. I didnt try yet on the trunk, maybe I will try it on my Bougainvillea because their trunk is Unbendable. Wrapping the cut with plastic film are better than aluminium foil because insect can get in the aluminium foil & its not good at retaining moisture.

The problem is that if it fails, we won't know if it's because of the repot or because of the bend.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Жыл бұрын
If it fails it will 100% be because of the bend. I removed about 10% of roots to change the angle and I did not disturb the core.
