Truss U-Turn: Top tax rate cut 'not my idea'

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury has denied reports he presented Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng with a paper suggesting scrapping the 45p top tax rate.
Chris Philp was asked multiple times by Kay Burley whether he had proposed the idea.
He insisted he had been "asked to look at dozens and dozens of different ideas" but would not divulge details on "private conversations".

Don't let them brush this under the rug. Don't let them try and make us believe they "Listen". They've been doubling down until the very end, and have only done a U turn when it's the very last option. They still thought it would be a good idea and was pushing for it. The fact it was even proposed is shocking.

Something everyone who has looked at this knows - there has never been a case where trickle-down worked. There was a cap on bankers' ludicrous bonuses (where are the nurses bonuses?) because the bonuses were judged to be part of the cause of the Banking Crash. We still haven't paid the debts the bankers created thirteen years ago. This is not about sound economics, it's about pure, unadulterated greed. Nice job Kay Burley! It is good to see a mainstream news show host properly grill a govt minister. The mainstream press are usually quite timid with govt politicians because they are threatened with no shows if they are not. Ms Burley is one of those with enough clout to buck that trend, although she'll still want them on her show. My view is that if they don't want to be scrutinised then do not appear when invited, the show should invite opposition MPs and place a cardboard cut-out of the govt minister in a chair to one side.

No government In the world does that. We're paying the most in tax in Europe already. 45p reversal was a good idea but it was the wrong time. It would have put it back where we where before the Conservative party put in the first place. Labour didn't have 45p. Since thatcher bar 5 years of blair our rate has always been 40p and our economy still grew 10x.
