In this 22 rifle ammo review, I go over why I switched from Bulk box Remington Thunderbolts 22 lr ammo to CCI Mini Mags. I used a few different types of ammunition this year and finally decided that my Marlin 60 22 rifle likes the CCI Mini Mags the best.

I’ll have to add comment- when we start talking about plinking vs accuracy target/hunting - CCI has yet to let me down on the five or six rigs I’m working with. I’ve recycled 10’s if not 100’s of thousands of rounds and there are very few options today that can provide me with the constant accuracy I enjoy to be in the company of 😎. I suppose there is alway the one or two off that would require something a bit leaner..??..??

CCI has been my preferred .22LR ammo brand for as long as I have shot .22LR. Winchester Super X is pretty good too, but most bulk packs I have used, whether it be Remington, Federal or Winchester all have about the same inconsistencies. There is BIG difference between ammo used for fun/plinking and serious ammo made for reliability. Here's my rule for all firearms. Zero your platform with your choice of good to high quality ammo, whether it be for target/competition, hunting, or duty/SHTF. Then when you want to shoot cheap stuff, just take notice of the new POI it has at the different ranges and zoom levels you usually shoot at. That way, your gun is always zeroed for your serious ammo, but after getting a feel for where your cheap ammo hits vs where you are zeroed, you can still make hits on your targets. Alot of you already know this common knowledge but it's all too often I see people rezeroing every time they switch ammo.

If you have a 10/22 replacing the extractor and firing pin with volquartsen parts will make a huge difference when using certain ammo. I never really had many issues before but after using a bolt tune up kit, there were even less to no issues with any ammo.

oh, btw, my model 60 chews right through the Federal 550 Bulk pack, and CCI Stingers. Loves 'em. I haven't shot much more of anything else through it in the recent decades since I found out it loves those 2 options that pretty much covers all the bases, but as I remember from way back in the day it always ate EVERYTHING I fed it including those old PMC Sidewinders LRN that I used to pick up at the local little gun shop for about 50 cents a box or $4 a brick because that's all we could afford. Ahhh, happy days.

CCI Velocitors 40 gr.hp @ over 1400 fps with the Browning lever in my experience is a favorite choice, its great for accuracy and quick humane kills. Even though it usually tends to mangle the meat more than many other .22 ammo, it's negligible to me because I'd rather rely on the superior performance. Not too shabby for dispatching bigger critters such as coyote or raccoon if a close and clean shot is apparent, so it remains my #1 overall preferred .22 small game selection.

Going to test the Mini Mags now, bought 2k of them, but my 10/22 runs just fine on CCI Standard and Top Shot. BUT, my Butler Crap mags just won't work. @@jross13450 I bought 2k of CCI Topshot and half through that I've probably had 50 that did not go off, and they all had good strikes. Minimags... NO malfunctions yet on around 1'200 of them. They cost twice as much, but I can't compete with ammo I know will fail, so now I stick with the Minimags. I think the Minimags burn a bit cleaner too, but I'm not sure. The only downside with the Minimags is that they actually give a tiny bit more of muzzle rise compared with CCI Standard and CCI Topshot. I can't see where that would make any difference other than when double tapping my IPSC Minirifle :)

Truth is I prefer CCI Mini Mags. But price difference during the shortage and being impossible to find I used Thunderbolts and they have always worked well for me. CCI Mini Mags and Stingers are my favorites, but I've shot way more Thunderbolts over the years. I actually switched to shooting .17 HMR when the .22 shortage was in it's 3 or 4 year run. .17 HMR was plentiful but I didn't use them on game animals just vermin as they are devastating on small game.

In the last 2 months we have fired off almost 1000 rounds of Thunderbolt. Some are definitely louder than others, really "hot". Some are much quieter than average. Nothing I would call a "squib" but it is noticeable. None of them have malfunctioned. We have two model 60's, a Henry, and a Rough Rider. The variance seems more noticeable in the rifles which I assume is due to the longer barrels. This being said, we used them with great success for backyard plinking. Would never ever use them to sight in a rifle though.

The problem with CCI bullets is that in an old gun (one made before copper plating bullets) you should shoot lead non-plated .22s. The reason is that plating makes the lead harder. Which is harder and causes more wear on the rifling over time. I have noticed that .22s with thin rifling, like plated bullets more often than non-plated. I think this is because the plated are also slightly larger as well.

I bought a Colt 1911 .22. First time I went to the range I used Remington Thunderbolt. Everything went well. However, when I returned home and I cleaned the barrel the brush got - really stuck!!!! It took me some time and a lot of force to remove the brush. I called Colt (Umarex) and they advised it has a match barrel and I should only use quality ammunition. I had to use a .17 brush and Choy Boy pads and eventually got it clean. Next time I used CVI and no issues. My nephew laughed at my experience so I gave him the rest oh The thunderbolts. Next weekend he comes to my house with his Ruger SR22. Uncle I need your help. My cleaning brush is stuck!,,

Agree on the Thunderbolts "dirty" shooting. Without a copper wash they lead up too. That said, I've rarely had problems with the Thunderbolt fodder in any of my nine rimfire rifles. My Ruger KNR-5 likes it too. This is the only ammo that consistently feeds/fires from my fussy Charter AR-7. The gun was a freakin' nightmare to shoot till I tried the Thunderbolt ammo. Shoots well from my Papoose too. Used to sell for $9 a brick at Dick's Sporting Goods back around 2010. The thing about rimfires is you gotta feed them what they like. Also any ammo sometimes shoots to different POI from lot to lot. A good idea is to buy a few bricks from the same lot. I found this out in the early 1980's.

Back when bricks were $8.99 we would shoot a brick a day. The dirty factor was present then as well, so we would quick clean the repeaters after every couple hundred rounds with Rem. Thunderbolts and Federal whatever they were, pre bulk pack. I noticed as time went on misfires became more of an issue. CCI Stingers were our favorite. I wish I had shot Mini Mags as well.

Thunderbolts work great in my Marlins model 60 and 795, also works great in my smith and Wesson 15-22, and ruger 10/22. They are dirty but not terrible. Cci also work great too and are cleaner, and more expensive. Federal bulk is good as well, golden bullets mmm just ok. Winchesters In my experience is my least favorite... Lots of failures with the 222 333 555. Out of the bulk offerings, I'd choose thunderbolts and federal bulk cheap and reliable.

Wow... what a NON-video... I LOVE Thunderbolts... especially when I can get them for 3¢ or 4¢ a piece. Mini Mag are GREAT but whaaatttt do they cost??? They're double the amount. I've found Thunderbolts to be almost 100% reliable, if not COMPLETELY 100%... However, they're not 100'% consistent. But like almost 100% of the people who shoot 22LR, I'm a plinker. If I needed MY Marlin Model 60 (18 round) to feed my family, I'd probably spend the extra and by the Mini Mag too.

I've had the exact same issue! Not even worth buying for plinking. I had to buy a new rod because there was so much lead caked to my barrel. I had to reassemble the crap rod and hammer it through AGAIN to get my brush through the barrel (H&K 416D .22LR). I'm still scrubbing lead out out of the barrel. It might come free with some mini-mags and another cleaning. Keep in mind, the 416 .22lr barrel is close to a smooth bore but still technically rifled... Shoots straight for three shots with thunderbolt and everything else is exactly NOT where you're aiming and it's time to clean again.

I have an old Marlin 60. When I got it we shot open sights only and used bulk ammo like Thunderbolts. They did fine for playing around and simple hunting. As I got older the gun got a scope, and I moved to CCI ammo. I shoot the Mini Mags, but mostly stick with the sub sonic rounds from CCI. I find I get better accuracy out of them, but I'm not trying to shoot super long range. I really like the CCI CB Long ammo, but that's almost impossible to find. It's great for up to 25 yards, super quiet, and won't cycle the bolt. This also make it good for new shooters.

A squib is not a dud and a dud is not a squib.. the definition of a squib load, courtesy the National Rifle Association’s “Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting”: “A squib load occurs when the cartridge develops less than normal pressure or velocity after ignition of a cartridge. Squib loads can cause a bullet to fail to exit the muzzle and become lodged in the bore.”

It really depends on which firearm you are using. I have a sign Sauer p322 have tried them all, hands down thunderbolt runs the smoothest. All other rounds through that weapon is a jam fest.

I use CCI Mini Mag in the field, I use Thunderbolts training with my granddaugher, it gives me an excellent opportunity to show her how to clean a really dirty rifle.

I use Savage Mkii f, Marlin 60, 795, and 39a, Remington 597, and Ruger American Rimfire. Out of many varieties of Federal, Winchester, Remington, CCI, Eley, and Gemtech, Shooting at 25 yards, The Best Bullet Is: CCI AR Tactical. CCI Standard Velocity is maybe a little better in the bolt action rifles. But overall it is the AR Tactical. Especially in the semiautomatic rifles

2 rifles, a 581s and a 10/22 International. Agulra 40 gn rn and the 38 gn Hp both rifles shoot this the best. The CCI Select and the standard Velocity In the bolt gun. Federal Auto Match bulk, it's just out there, the 10/22 shoots this stuff but hangs up now and then. The 581 shoots shorts so I use the standard velocity on yard pests and the High Velocity Short HP is a great Rat Wrecker.

I have a Marlin 881 bolt action. It shoots very well with CCI Minimags (40grn). Also, Federal Champion (510) does well. And the same with CCI Blazers (40grn).

service1956 I love my Marlin 881!!!!!!! Shoots American Eagle 38gr., very well. And shoots the Thunderbolts pretty good also. The Thunderbolts just don't feed as well. I missed a squirrel today, with my crappy 10/22. Last time THAT will happen....Marlin next time.....DEAD!!!!

I made the mistake of buying a case (not a brick). There was probably 200 rounds failure to fire. I buy CCI Mini Mags, CCI Standard Velocity, Blazer (also CCI product). No problems. 1 failure to fire in 20 years, no joke.

If you are hunting and want consistent accuracy, go with CCI. If you want to plink, go with the cheap shit, just don’t try to resight. You’re not looking for accuracy then. You’re rapid firing for fun. I’ve tried 4 or5 different rounds in my 10-22 takedown and it likes CCI mini mags best. I’m still looking to find other rounds. I’d like to try the Federal Premium Hunter Match. Can’t find them locally. Don’t want to spend as much on shipping as the rounds cost. CCI seems to be the all around best 22lr.

I was recently given an Ithica M49s . I have tried a few different .22 ammo . The Remington rounds are dirty . Cheap if thats what you want . The Winchester ammo is a little cleaner . The Cci Stinger . Give good pop . Penetrates well . Have not tried the Mini mag yet , but learning CCI BRAND is the way to go . Stinger fan .

While I don't have problems with the remingtons feeding or extracting because i use a bolt I can tell that some sound louder than others , you really can tell the difference in a .22 revolver.. I use the mini mag for hunting they shoot the best day in day out in my rifle.

Funny. I got a smoking deal on 7 cases of thunderbolts. Never buy them... but they were mis marked. 4.49 for a CASE...yes 4.49 cdn for 500. I bought 7. One thing about my henry vs my 795. The henry will eat it all. Also...winchester white box cycles flawlessly is my marlin. Had more squibs with federal. Figure that out.

For .22LR I have used CCI mini mags and Remington gold Thunderbolts My current .22LR arsenal consists of a Ruger Mark III 22/45 and a Ruger 10/22 Take down So far I have used both on the Mark III but haven't used the remington gold thunderbolts on the 10/22 I've had a few issues with the remington when it came to loading but the CCIs by far are way more reliable, CCI all the way but I like the bulk .22LR boxes that remington sels Would love to get a Mark IV Hunter one day and shoot it

In today’s time you take what you can get. I’ve heard thunderbolts were a iffy brand but they had a-bunch in stock at the store so before it was to late to snag them I dropped $100 for 1,000 rounds of thunderbolt.

Have an SR22 Ruger , Henry Lever Action and Marlin 795 , CCI blazer work great , get them in bulk 500 , mini mags 36 and 40 grain are awesome also , Federal 525 bulk pack was also good but not consistent, you could actually here the difference in sound when shot . Don’t waste my time with others anymore. Many other good brands but the cost is considerably higher, not my choice for plinking .

2020-2021 has been an interesting time for ammo and I've shot a lot of weird brands. CCI Mini Mags feed the best through my wife's 10/22 so I keep that stocked for her when possible. I FINALLY got a S&W 617 so I can play too... so far it eats anything I throw at it because it's a revolver. But for any semi-auto I would stick to high-quality, consistent ammo and so far that has been CCI. I was thinking of buying some Remington TB since it's available at 12 cents a round. I'll probably buy a box of 800 but it'll only feed my gun.

I have a good amount of 22lr rifles and use Aguila as it was the only brand available recently. It ran all my semiautomatic rifles well and is reasonably accurate. 10/22, model 60, 795, rossi rs22, savage s22, browning sa22, Mossberg 151M-B etc. Recently I was able to try some Norma tac 22 and wow that stuff shoots lights out accurate. It's a bit pricey but worth it in my mind. I was able to find some online at a much better price point. Thanks for your video and all the great information you provided. Rich

My 10/22 shoots Thunderbolts the most accurately out of Fed Target Grade(or match grade whichever it is), Winchester Westerns, Winchesters in the red plastic box, and Remington Golden Bullet. I can keep them all in about a half inch group or so pretty consistently out to 50 yards if I do what I am supposed to.
