I've recently been laid up from back surgery from years of hard work. I came across your channel, and I'm a big fan. I love seeing people's equipment dreams come true, especially through hard work. I'm especially inspired, considering your doing this inspite of California. Although oregon where I live, as you know isn't much better. Good job bud. Living the American dream through hard work. You have probably sold almost as many rams as yellowstone. Have a good one

I love my 4500 and 5500's - converted both of them to a pickup by doing a box swap and stretching it. Best of both worlds. Truthfully I dont tow anywhere near you, I draw the line at 32k (toy hauler and race car). Trucks have way more in them and way more brakes but that feels comfortable for me and the entire package. Love the C&C trucks and I still have 4WD for going over the mountains when its snowing.

I love that you put these trucks to work and they seem fit your niche perfectly. Is there a hypothetical setup you wish you had (truck or trailer or both) that would fit your needs better that doesn't exist?

Marques pipeline, Tiechert and Lund construction all run a flatbed setup, with an air brake bumper pull trailer and they seem very versatile and more than capable. You can use ramps to go from your trailer to your flatbed and potentially haul 3 pieces at once. Track chipper on the flatbed, tl12 and 080 on the trailer would be slick.

Most of my jobs you can’t get into with a semi bumper pull set up. And again come into weight issues where can’t haul to bigger ones legally at same time without permit. I have a buddy that has a set up like that. But he also grabbed a gooseneck and uses the goose often

I still stand by my first/original opinion. I think you made the best decision with the most recent 5500. That truck is designed/engineered to do what you are doing with it. Anything heavier, the 4X4 capability gets involved in the conversation. JMHO --gary

I don't have equipment to haul around like you do, but I moved up from hotshot to semi and I'm loving it. My 2010 Peterbilt with it's ISX-15 and 13 speed climbs mountains like a champ and I only have to hit the brakes going down if I pick the wrong gear at the top. LOVE my jakes and the sleeper. Cruises 70 MPH at 1,500 - 1,550 RPM even when grossing 77 - 78K. As for your 3500 rig, aren't you limited by the tongue weight and maintaining 15-20% tongue weight? Putting most of the weight on the trailer axles and not enough on the pin will make it sketchy at best... I always aimed for 17% tongue weight. On my trailer, that was with the load centered on the midpoint. Some guys put way too much tongue weight and then they wonder why they get pounded and then wind up with cracked welds.
@logankistler
@logankistler 2 ай бұрын
The tongue weight is why he went with the 5500, he mentioned he can have 8500 on the pin which would be a 42,500lb trailer at 20%. I think the semi makes more sense when you’re doing long interstate runs from loading dock to loading dock vs. someone who mostly hauls their equipment around to jobs in their county

What up man. I’m still going to install a load leash on my shit along with a Vogt turbo that is not from BD diesel. Chris Patterson that has his 3,000 horse power mean green common rail likes BD diesel a lot. I might get a turbo from them also i got to drive a 12v that came to our shop 15 years ago that had a set of those tow twins. We fired ringed his rig and he had a bad head gasket . Anyways man I have an afe blade runner for a back up and I have a turbo that I found on eBay that is an phatshaft industrial injection. Not everybody knows what they are looking at lol. We are also a dealer for industrial injection. We are doing another compound turbo set up on a 6.7 Cummins with a customer request with a Randys transmission. I can’t wait to see it on our dyno 💪🏼🥳🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

In Pa DOT has been known for checking manufacture’s GCWR. Not just what the truck is registered for. Even if the axles, tires, and axle weights are within spec. If an accident were to happen how do you know you’re safe if the truck is registered for more than the manufacturer’s rating? Everything is well documented these days with the manufacturer’s rating for towing, GVW, GCWR etc. I also have a 5500 and have to register it for GCWR and went through all this.

Funny how that’s works becuase you can add more axle behind a semi and gross more but you can’t do that with a mini semi truck?? Checks out. So if I buy a single axle kenworth rated for 19k on its own with a 6.7 Cummins and a 6 speed auto I can tow 40k then? Literally the same thing as a 5500 class.

The two/three things I'd do when moving up to a class 8 rig is, a quad cab for interior space or a day cab, and do a 4X4 conversion on a single axle. Expect a doubling of your insurance rate. I used Ford F450's for tow trucks. Then the GVRW weight limits changed and a steel bed rollback became too heavy, as DOT was limiting you to the manufacturers placard weight. I was paying $14k a year for 3 trucks with a million liability coverage. Found a deal on a Western Star with a Century 40 ton boom and winch. The insurance on the Western Star was $9k. Added a International 4900 tandem rollback with steel bed to move equipment, and another $8k insurance. No claims in 6 years. I don't regret purchasing larger equipment, however I had to increase the rate I charged.

What is the 12% tax youre talking about on the 5500 trailer? I have a 2020 3500 HO and a 24k rated trailer. When you get into the 40k lbs trailers is there an extra tax? I have my CDL and a 35k weight declaration sticker. I know I could gross more but trailer is pretty much maxed out with the equipment I haul for my business. I've considered a more heavy duty trailer but am not familiar with the 12% tax.

If the 5500 gcwr is 32k how can you tow 50k and get tags for 54k? Is the Gcwr just a made up number by the manufacturers? Do you just go off of the axel weight ratings? As long as you're under the front axel weight and rear axel and trailer axel ratings your good? And of course your tires must be rated for the weight i understand.

You're nuts man. I hope you never have any sort of incident while hauling, cause the lawyers are gonna eat you alive on GVWR, GCWR, hitch rating, CDL class, axle spacing, axle loading, tire rating, tire tread, maintenance logs, safety gear, spare fuses, etc, whether it's your fault or not (anything they can do to claim you have a pattern of negligence). Ask me how I know. Anything larger than a skid steer gets pulled behind my Class 8 air-brake truck now (in Texas), and I'm still nervous, because it doesn't matter whose fault it is, the commercial guy always gets sued. Best I can hope for is to give my insurance company a fighting chance to fend off the ambulance chasers and hope they don't raise my rates for bs that isn't my fault.

@@gungadinn Yeah, I have a 5500 too. It's good for 9k of payload after you factor in bed weight. His might be 10k. That 10k is the weight of the trailer. So with tandem 16k axles, that's good for 32k of payload on the trailer. Bet he's been over that before. I'm not hating on him. Love his content. But pulling heavy with a single axle class 6 truck is great until it isn't. The bite hurts.
