Featured in TIR Episode 325 (Part 2 of 2): Saxophonist and composer Thomas Lockett, an original member of one of the most talented, beloved and bad-ass funk bands of the 1970s and 1980s - Dayton, Ohio’s Slave. The group’s gifted musicians also included late, great bassist Mark Adams and guitarist Mark Hicks; multi-instrumentalist Steve Washington; horn player Floyd Miller; and later on, drummer-singer Steve Arrington, guitarist-singer Curt Jones and keyboardist Sam Carter - the latter four have all been featured on past TRUTH IN RHYTHM episodes.
Slave’s classic jams include “Slide,” “Just a Touch of Love,” “Stellar Fungk,” “Just Freak,” “Volcano Rupture,” “Watching You,” “Wait for Me,” “Stone Jam,” “Snap Shot,” “Baby Sinister” and “Sizzlin’ Hot.” Some of Slave’s members went on to more success with acts like Aurra & Steve Arrington’s Hall of Fame. Here, Lockett discusses the group's history, challenges and important legacy.

This Interview Is Very Important. In Black Culture, "Slave" Was The First Of Their Kind. Everybody Talks About James Brown And Sly And The Family Stone. But Slave Brought Another Sound In The Music Game. Funk Rock Pop Fusion. Totally Underrated. The History Of Black Music Is Very Powerful And Meaningful. Especially When You Are Young In The 1970's, Learning About Yourself And Going Through The Trial And Tribulations Of Self. Music Does Matter. But When It Comes To "The Black Musician" It's Painful And Depressing. "Slave" Was Deep On Many Levels. Dr.GX Is On It! This Is A Very Deep Podcast. It Has The Greatest On Here! Alot Of Untold Stories. "Stone Jam" Epic!

For Some Strange Necessary Reason," Slave Awareness" Is Deep. Mr. Thomas Lockett,Will Be One Of The First Black Musicians To Lead The Way Down The Path For The Next Level To Go Above The Destruction Of African American Black Music. With Demonic Wicked Hypnotic Cultural Mental Interruption,It Came In And Kidnapped The Mental Logical Funky Soulful Spiritual Rhythmatic Music We Needed As Humans. It Took Away The Funk Rock R&B Bands. With Hope And Purpose, I Truly Hope A Brand New Funk Band Comes Out Of This. It's Just Begun. From All Of These Wonderful Thought Provoking Stimulating Interviews, I Hope Reason And Meaning Comes To The Surface. I'm Definitely Doing My Part. Being Grown And Funky Is My Culture.

Deat Mr. Lockett. Thank you for your historical perspective on the underpinnings of the great tour-de-force known as Slave. Regardless of the hard times, a great legacy of music can be attributed to you as well as the other band members. Regardless of Slave's limited touring schedule back in the day, I was fortunate enough to catch you during the group's heydey. It was billed as the last funk show of the summer I believe in September of 1977. This was in Northern Ca. at the Concord Pavillion. Slave was on a bill including Lenny Williams, Maze, Aalon, Enchantment with The Floaters as headliners. Slide was the only hit at the time for Slave but to my recollection, you brothers got a standing ovation for the torrid funk ya'll threw down. It was magical so I'm happy to give a richly deserved thumbs up for a group of young men earning their chops. Great interview btw Scott.

YES! Another awesome interview and very informative one given an ORIGINAL SLAVE MEMBER, MR. THOMAS LOCKETT. It helped give a clearer picture on what Mr. Floyd " Brother Slide" Miller was expressing in your previous interview with him. May the Lord bestow His blessing upon the Original members of SLAVE in the royalty acquisition/entitlement benfits that goes along with the "SLAVE" trademark.🎶🎶🎺🎷🎸💪. Those other bands who call themselves SLAVE I see them as tribute bands. And can't level up to the ORIGINAL 😊

Another awesome interview Scott. Not understanding why so many fans of Slave here and on other platforms are so happy to shout out Steve Washingtons name. Sure he had a heavy hand in their start. Clearly he had a share in the end as well. Floyd Miller pretty much says it in an earlier interview conducted by Scott. Now if Im hearing right. Thomas is saying likewise. Wishing Thomas and the fellas success. They truly Came to Blow Our Minds.

I did enjoy the fact that he is SAYING , the BUSINESS Of Slave, is being straightened out and then he is assembling an AUTHENTIC sounding Slave Group but what he needs to realize is that, The Past Is The Past and NO ONE is gonna be THOSE guys you remember . THOSE guys were not and ARE not the same guys from the past. The music will SOUND different no matter how close an individual sounds like someone you are missing..

I hate that. I know the courts have tried to limit improper use of band names. It’s one thing to have a single former member use the band name but when no one ever played in the band it’s ridiculous.

this "part 2" answered a lot of questions i myself had. glad to hear Danny get his just-due in this part, with Thomas acknowledging how important he was to the group. yes, the guys were young, and made a lot of poor business decisions at the time, as would be expected. the definitely should have toured more, with touring being a major income-maker. years ago, a friend of mine told me he felt the core Slave-members probably didn't like the direction the off-spring Arrua was taking, thus being the reason when invited to work with them later, they declined. it's a shame so many of the members have passed at such relatively young ages. here's hoping Thomas, along with Floyd, get their upcoming project up and off the ground. looking forward to it.
