You can kind of see hints of it when Cody said “that’s the best way to deal with crazy people, be chill about it”-there’s this fallacy where as long as you’re being ‘nice’ you’re never the one in the wrong. You can say anything as long as your tone is calm and even-keeled. The idea is for that Karen in particular she wanted to goad him into being so fed up he struck her (as many of us would be tempted to do) since what was on camera was her “asking nicely” and not her running around his store fucking with his employees. It’s all about optics with these people. It’s not really Cody’s fault he’s not familiar enough with the behavior to know that there are ways to harass others without yelling at them or saying a single mean word: for example, stalking is harassment, persistent flirting is harassment, and so on. The key is if you tell someone to get off your property or out of your personal space and they insist on hovering around you, there’s a pretty high chance it’s harassment. When it doubt, record it on video. If someone’s delusional enough to twist a situation as harassment when it’s blatantly not, the public will usually let them know 😂

Yes, it was confirmed that he booked the big room first then canceled and booked that room. It was a scam to make the hotel think it was a mistake on their end and upgrade him for free. I'm not going to get into the whole idea because i'm not being paid for this shit and i have a philo exam tomorrow, but i get where ur coming from; yes, men too likely have defensive strategies for situations like this. There is no excuse to treat people like this, regardless of gender. HOWEVER, we must consider that women are much more likely to be physically harmed than men. It's not an opinion, its a fact. Also the whole; 'you ppl are the reason we cant speak our emotions or fears' is ridiculous. The OP never stated men don't do this. The OP only stated that, as a women, the risks are higher. There are so many layers to that one. 1. You booked it through a 3rd party travel / booking site. It's not like people individually look at your reservation. It just comes into their system and is processed automatically. 2. She offered you some options. If none of them work for you, that's not really her problem. 3. Hold the phone. You have 2 adults and 2 kids and you can't make a room with a king and pull-out couch work? Buddy, there isn't a holiday inn in the world that has a solution for you, my guy. 4. I had a case when an employee yelled at me and said they could not help me with my sim card (even though a day ago they gave me a faulty sim card and said to return it if it does not work), and made me cry (I am ashamed to admit it, but he was so rude). When he saw me crying (I tried to be discreet, but he saw), he told me to get out of the shop. The other employee then helped me and replaced the card saying sorry. When I asked what was the name of the first because I wanted to file a complaint, he started saying that I was threatening him and that he was going to call the police (I asked once and was not yelling). Maybe I was Karen, but there were other bad reviews about this employee and his coworker said he often reacts aggressively, so I thought the complaint could be the only way to save other customers from such treatment. She was not right for nagging several times, but I think we do not see the whole picture.

That hotel booking one was excruciating. You meet so many of these people in customer service and all you can do is put in a polite smile and repeat, repeat, repeat. If i were in her shoes and she had access to a computer with the booking system on it i would've brought the customer over and physically show him why his request is not possible. Sometimes customers really have no idea how these things work but usually once you show them they start to cool down and comply. Props to her though for keeping composure; sometimes you really want to shout at these customers but you never really know how they would react to that and if there is a potential for violence, so you have to de-escalate as much as possible as not to get on their bad side

I don’t think the lady was in the wrong personally. I think the worker was. She was saying she couldn’t figure out how to put the sheets together I believe and that the worker wasn’t helping her. She didn’t seem like a Karen to me. She seemed more like someone who got overwhelmed by the stress and frustration of trying to figure something out, asking someone for help about it, and they just tell you to figure it out on your own. I could be wrong but she wasn’t really attacking anyone but rather venting frustration about not being helped. I will also say I didn’t like how the worker kept egging her on when she clearly agitated. I work in the service industry and we are not taught to make the problems worse and make customers feel bad. If the lady had been verbally abusive, attacking her, etc then sure I wouldn’t blame her but she wasn’t doing any of that. I am legitimately impressed at how many ways she found to rephrase the same answer. A common bullying tactic (which the Darren was attempting) is to just ask the exact same question over and over, in the hopes that the other person will get tired of giving the same answer and relent. One way to deal with that is to give the same response, but worded slightly differently each time. It creates the illusion that you are presenting multiple responses, which shuts down the effectiveness of someone trying to just stubbornly blast the same question until they get what they want. Well done!

It’s a pretty common scam you see in the hospitality industry actually. They cancel their reservation at the last minute, get the cheaper one, and play like the third party made a mistake they shouldn’t be responsible for. The last minute cancellation ideally means the nicer room is empty. Guess this guy didn’t get there fast enough. This woman would’ve seen both reservations come into the system, as well as the time of cancellation, so she probably knew exactly what was up when the guy would only produce the first reservation on his phone.

My personal opinion about that one is this is a woman who has autism and there's some kind of fixation going on there about rules generally. We don't see the full explanation from the video, but that's my read of her motivations and mannerisms. Not convinced it's "karen" territory either... the only one which fit that criteria clearly was the woman who scared the child on his bike. The rest are untreated mental health issues in the wild and then an angry, entitled man at a hotel. If anything the only real karen was actually the darren.

@@RSmith-qd2ukI’m not sure generalizing or diagnosing people is a good idea. Like even if she did have autism, that conversation is not justified. Autism does not give you a pass to follow someone around and honestly assuming she has autism and coping up the other angry people to just being mentally ill does not help the stigma on mental health. Part of that reason is why mental health is so frowned upon. Society’s image of mental illness is skewed to believe we are dangerous while in reality, those dangerous cases are rare. Some people just do not have control of their emotions and it doesn’t necessarily mean they have a mental disorder.

I know his is not what you said but I'll specify for the sake of destigmatization and to clarify: *This was not an autistic meltdown*

@@Fairygoblin777 to me it seems less like psychosis or mania and more like that's just who she is. I could be wrong, and obviously can't know from 1 minute but she's coherent. I have a lot of people in my family who have bipolar/schizoaffective and when they are blowing up like that it's complete non sense, they can barely string a sentence together and are quickly jumping from one thing to another. Her thoughts are clear, she's making sense (like grammatically), and she is connected to reality. Personally this comes across less as mental illness more as she's just a super entitled nasty person. Which cbt can help, but tbh I don't know how much meds would do.

@@Oliviaandtrinanot everyone with the myriad mental illnesses that can cause this behavior presents symptoms in the same way as those you know. My mom is bipolar and my bf (who I've lived with 6 years now) has schizoaffective disorder. I've seen them both behave that way, particularly when they are off their meds and exposed to triggers or if other contributing factors (like drugs/alcohol) are involved. In fact, my bf only becomes somewhat incoherent when he drinks. Ability to string together cohesive thoughts and use proper grammar is not an indication of anything..?? I've also worked in 2 mental health facilities (briefly, for my own mental health, but you don't need long to see a bit of everything esp. during a pandemic!) Mental illness is extremely diverse and what you have seen personally is not a representation of all people and situations.

@@Fairygoblin777I hope you are doing better and have gotten to a good place with your treatment... And that you were in a decent facility because some of them can be a pretty hellish experience, especially if you were in a state institution😞 I have seen loved ones go through this and it's heartbreaking. At the same time, I really understand why people go off meds. It's frustrating to me when I see the consequences but I can't say i wouldn't struggle with taking antipsychotics too. I hope you've found something that works for you. And a therapist you like, that can be just as hard!

Exactly why I will never work in hospitality again. I was front desk at a spa connected to a resort and the amount of people who would book with the resort and just assume they would get a service in a spa was wild. Like, nowhere in your booking is that a guarantee. We are open to the public and we list on our website that we are usually booked out six weeks in advance. No way in hell would you get in, especially not when you just waltz in and demand I make space for you. What a frustrating job. I only had to do it for six months but the amount of entitlement I had to handle was too much.

I work in custoemr service. There is no phrase that makes me want to commit violence more than " What do you expect me to do?" when the issue is something that's totally out of my control to begin with. It just floors me that a grown adult will look me in the eyes and say that after I've just professional and concisely explained to them why the problem happened and what all I can do to fix it on my end or make up for it in some way. I SO badly want to tell them "I expect you to fucking figure it out. I told you whats going. I apologized. I offered to compensate. I expect you to go get professional help because you don't know how to be told no or how to comprehend that I'm not out to fucking get you." This girl did such an incredible job of staying professional and not giving into his inmature behavior. Just saying the rules/policy over and over again is the only way to get these kinds of people to go away because reasoning with them isn't an option.

So on Cody's comment on that woman's scream in the beginning, I did that once and it horrified me. I drank too much for almost 11 years, and the last night I drank I blacked out and started a fight that was completely undeserved and unjustified. I was absolutely the villain. During that I was tackled to the ground by someone trying and get me to stop, and my knee was injured (torn meniscus). After that I have two hazy memories of me shouting the most primal shouts I've every heard in my life. Just fucking screaming. I was threatening to kill someone. I had completely lost it. Absolutely unhinged, just mentally broken. That night was a fucking nightmare and I hate myself for even being capable of that. I haven't drank a drop since then, and taken a lot of steps to sort through all the internalized anger I didn't even realize I was holding on to.

I can tell that guy seems to be spoiled, probably affluent, and has never slept on the floor, and doesn't even see it as a possibility. I was forced to do that! Screw that guy. I would've been tempted to say, hey why don't you let your wife and kids have the bed, go sleep in the damned car!

As far as the “insane Darren” video goes, I will just say that for a woman, having a man speak aggressively to you at any time of day, but especially night, is never a good situation. There was a VERY good reason she was filming, and thankfully it ended well enough that she could just make a TikTok sharing that experience…
