I staked my zucchini, crooknecks, and acorn squash (bush type). It is working out well. Still getting fruits, they're actually more prolific right now than they've been all summer, for whatever reason. The staking and pruning is keeping everything off the ground, flowers well visible for the pollinators, space saving, easily accessible, and allowing more energy to go to the fruits rather the leaves. Also i cut the zucchini and crooknecks rather small, because i dont like seediness. However, they have been maturing surprisingly slowly. I'm lucky to get one every 3 days, from 3 zucchini plants and 2 crookneck plants. They definitely haven't been getting away from me, thank goodness!

I love the larger zucchini for stuffing with cheese and bread or other ingredients. But I planted late, and I’ve only had one zucchini so far, I’m just getting female flowers now. I’m in Ontario.

As much as you do like the large ones what he says about harvesting early really helped me this year and I could see it. Especially in the first month of it sending out flowers if you get one pollinated I’d pick it when it’s about 5-6” long and pretty skinny. Really helps the plant develop more. I actually had a green zucchini survive for 4 months by growing it vertical and pruning old leafs. Small ones fried in some butter till golden brown is really good by itself or even on a sandwich.

Besides tomatoes, zucs are my #2 favorite plant to grow. Savory or sweet there is so much to do with them and I had geat success in previous years. Going to try to stand them up next year just to make more room in the garden. I had ants stealing the pollen from my zucs. I thought it was normal until it became a bigger problem this year. I saw a video you made about getting rid of them around zuc/squash. Also need to amend more soil. Definately more prepared for next year!

I seem to be able to grow absolutely anything except zucchini. Had four plants this year and got about 5 or 6 fruits total. Just cant get them to produce female flowers that survive long enough to open.

You are right about planting different varieties. This summer our yellow zucchini did amazing. I'll bet we got 20 or more squash off of it. My regular zucchini did not do that well. I replanted them for late summer and I am getting a few now. But now the deer are eating off all of the leaves which I didn't know they would do.

Squash bugs did our Golden Zucchini & Black Beauty squash in. I sprayed BT & Dead Bug but they won. So I pulled them after I pruned them to death (from boriers damage) and they stopped producing blooms, that was first of Aug. Now I'm struggling to keep the bugs from killing off my Butternut & newly planted Spaghetti squash & cucumbers! Its bad when you're spraying the BT & squishing they bugs with your feet at the same time!! Lol

Use Vic’s Vapor Rub to deter mosquitoes. Dab it on like perfume, behind ears, inner elbows, neck, wrists, ankles, behind knees , etc…. Doesn’t have to be thick. Thin layer. Let me know how this works for you.

Same here in Texas. Planted 3 plants just starting to produce and then vine borers😢 I pulled out the plants and made sure to kill all of the borers. Then replanted in another bed on other side of garden. They just sprouted so we will see if I can keep those pests away. Also battling harvester ants that come every night and eat all the leaves off the plants in the garden (currently the okra) so used coffee grounds around the beds to throw them off as much as possible. Need to get more coffee grounds since I used up the huge bag I got from Starbucks.

Do you guys know how to save a dying leucadendros? I pruned it today but a lot of the cones are dead. Went from luscious red green to now like dead branches and the leaves are falling off which are kind of yellow pale green. I need to know what kind of fertilizer I can put on it as I want to try to save it. I pruned it today as it's a fairly large leucadendron, which I've cut it down about 30% already but it doesn't look very healthy. Is somebody there can give me advice I'd really appreciate it. I can send pictures if you give me a link or an email address to so somebody can look at it tell me.

I gave up on zucchini due to heavy pest pressure. We always get a ton of borers, and they destroy everything that isn't a butternut squash. We also get two waves of them, so planting later in the season doesn't really help. Other than completely covering the zucchini with mesh cloth and manually pollinating them, I can't think of a way to grow them.

What is BT?
@FrozEnbyWolf150
@FrozEnbyWolf150 10 ай бұрын
@@carinadouah1951 Bacillus thuringiensis, an organic pesticide that affects the larval stage of pests that ingest it. It can sometimes be effective against squash borers, since it's the larva that chews into the vine, but you need to constantly reapply it to ensure they eat it. I heard there's a way to inject BT into the vines, but I don't have the tools to do this.

I get 10-15 vine borers in each plant, but I have been able to all my squash plants from death for 2 years now. You can start this earlier, but once you see those vine borer holes (that you should regularly check for) have to act ASAP. You saw how Luke's plant stem was sprawling along the ground. Cover part of that stem well beyond the vine borer holes with soil, compost, or soil/compost mix. The stem will put down more roots there. When the vine borer destroys the stem, preventing water and nutrients from getting to the plant, the newly rooting area will take over. You can do this in your garden bed or in wood chip walkways. Just push a little bit of soil under the vine too, if in wood chips. I hope it works equally well for you!
@FrozEnbyWolf150
@FrozEnbyWolf150 10 ай бұрын
@@mlynnw7831 Thanks, though I did try this method on my zucchini two years ago, and it didn't really work. The stem just rotted underground instead of growing new roots, and the plant ran out of energy trying to develop new roots. I probably didn't get to it early enough. I would need a way to stop borers from getting into the plant in the first place.
