Honestly I’m also* somebody who is really drawn to cults before they go bat shit, but I think if you’re aware that you were attracted to cults to you actually wouldn’t be able to get roped in. There’s a self-awareness element that people who are genuinely susceptible to cults don’t have in the moment. And for Becky, she’s got a good community around her and that isolation sense of powerlessness doesn’t seem to be a pervasive thing for her that cults typically pray on 🤔

@@SohiHien Same, I can't easily be put under even if I'm trying to, but I did learn hypnotism to help my wife with getting to sleep at night. I wasn't sure if it would work either, but after she woke up the first time and told me she had no recollection of the process, I started recording our sessions for the sake of transparency. Every time I showed her the audio for review, she never recognized anything, even though we were both awake and talking during the process. That alone suggests that we successfully got her into an alternate state of mind at least.

Psych nerd here, took AP and then a few courses sophomore year, but from a psychology standpoint-- you don't have to be afraid of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a combination of suggestion and tapping into the brains natural relaxation patterns. We're not entirely sure how all the chemical components work out, but you can never be forced to do something you don't want to, even if you have a subconscious desire to but don't want to perform an act out of a more conscious social expectation, you'll still be able to stop yourself. It relies heavily on how much you want it to happen, and how thorough the hypnotist is.

If you want more hypnosis tidbits of info, here's some: I was learning how to become a hypnotist (to reasonable success) in order to help my wife sleep better. While researching, I found horror stories of kids messing around with hypnosis and really harming people. The masters insist that you shouldn't learn hypnotism in the first place... it's not something most people are capable of handling in a purely altruistic mindset. And while the subconscious mind has some good protections against in-the-moment actions, it can still be forcefed new associations that can permanently affect someone... Importantly, programming into someone "commands" or "triggers" needs to have a TIME LIMIT baked in... Like a contract that expires after a year and needs to be renewed... "Whenever you hear a car honk, you'll sneeze" is something that can potentially go on forever. That's probably why a lot of stage hypnotists will make the trigger THEMSELVES... "When I clap my hands", "When you feel my hand on yours"... Etc... Because there's no time for constructing a limit, but the subject is still extremely unlikely to run into the trigger again. I believe that the danger of poorly-executed hypnosis was blown up a little bit because 1. It's priming to believe it's potent, which makes it more potent and 2. It suggests that paying for a master course is the best route to go down. Although, they're not exactly wrong. But the most serious piece of info that I saw was this: By telling people that hypnotism can't make you do anything you don't want to do, and that you are safe from mind control, THAT IS PART OF THE HYPNOTISM. It has already started by the time they say that. And it's a good thing to say/hear. It protects the subject. It's like wearing a helmet. It makes them more resilient to harmful hypnosis. That's why everyone repeats it: because the more people who believe it's true, the safer we all are. But don't worry, it's still true, even if people don't believe. It's just extra precaution. Wild shit right? I don't really see anyone talking about ethics and safety in hypnotism so I thought you'd like to know ^^

I think it's not actually the goal. The brain can only focus so much and so adding audible and physical distraction gets the brain set to 'simple commands' mode. It's like asking traumatic accident victims silly questions like their favourite colour, of they like animals etc they are simple questions for the brain to answer. It's easier for the brain than processing the accident. So the shock reflex eases off. Doesn't always work but it is a strategy to try calm people down.

Certified hypnotist here. All hypnosis is self hypnosis. I can only guide you. You have to be the one to follow the instructions and relax enough to do it. Also, your subconscious mind is highly moral and wants to keep you safe above all else so you will snap out of it if the suggestion goes against your morals or will put you in danger. Have you ever been watching TV and it took some a few times to get your attention? That is because we enter a light trance when watching TV. Why do you think advertisers started doing product placement in TV shows. It is a suggestion going straight to your subconscious mind and bypassing the consious mind that can easily reject.

It really isn't possible for them to make you do something you don't agree with. At uni I was in a group that got hypnotised and the worst was they had a different group up and had them all think they were watching p@rn... Some people got comfy, some hot terribly embarrassed and tried to turn the TV off, one snapped out of it and one got pulled his private part out and started playing. To say the hypnotist was surprised was an understatement and he got that under control real fast. In mine I was collecting fairies and was asked to strip a guy (who I had a major crush on! So I did top and belt then I stopped and said I didn't ask if this was OK. I'm sorry. He said that I shouldn't be upset it was OK. The hypnotist then said kids each other and we both snapped out. I was very confused holding his top and belt until my friends told me later. For me it was fuzzy I inside always knew I could stop doing what he said.

As much as I want to believe in hypnotism, it just feels extra cheesy. There are hypnosis things I’ve dabbled in, that didn’t include a person continuously talking-talking-talking. That might be what throws me off. Like a magic trick but the magician is reading off how his trick is done without taking a breath. It’s odd because while those things seem somewhat similar to me, although magic seeming much more interesting, one thing I would not play with is voodoo or ghost-seeking stuff. Once it goes into the spirit realm, I’m not a skeptic anymore lol

@@beepatpen There is science behind it, but it's a lot more easily explained than people imagine. It can be easily explained by the tendency for humans to conform in social settings and peer pressure. So people who are more prone to conformist behaviours are more likely to act hypnotised.

In stage hypnosis like this part of how it works is BECAUSE the guy is usually throwing off rapid fire suggestions and it barely gives you any time to react to them or mull them over in your head before you're basically being pushed into an action. In more longer form hypnosis with a proper induction, the trance is deepened and is individualized to the person. I've been hyperfixated on hypnosis ever since i was 12 years old and I've hypnotized lots of friends over the course of 9 years, some worked better than others. It makes sense to me that keith would be very suggestible, he reminds me of my friend who is also incredibely suggestible. Stage hypnosis usually doesnt put someone in a very deep trance so usually people still feel awake and aware, but just like they went along with the suggestions because they didnt really feel like resisting, so skeptics can usually write it off as just peer pressure. The truth is that most people are able to be hypnotized. Trance states actually occur naturally in people even if we dont notice it. A common example is if you've ever driven somewhere you've driven before a million times, so you don't have to think about the directions. People can enter driving trances while their body is on a form of autopilot and when they eventually get to the destination, they find they dont really remember the drive or were consciously aware of their driving choices. I'm sure almost everyone in the room could reach a form of trance if they were to have more individualized trances with a non-stage hypnotist. Hypnosis is all about relaxation, and by nature of stage hypnosis, if people struggle with being in public or have anxiety, they cant relax enough for them to enter a light trance for the stage hypnotist. The more "on guard" you are, the less you can be persuaded to enter trance. I have a friend who is basically impervious to trance, which is actually more rare to me. I am also impervious to trance in a way due to the way my brain works, but i am able to enter a form of self trance and suggestions do work for me, so my problem is more that i cant trust another person to hypnotize me so i just do it myself :P Oh wow i went off on a tangent whoops, anyway yeah my point was basically that hypnosis isn't nearly as scary or magical as people think, it's super cool though ^-^
