Hi Joe, happy mid-autumn Festival! Thank you for sharing and for your interest in Chinese culture! So nice to follow up with you on KZfaq and know you. Thank you!

The piggy one is just a snack, not exclusively for any festival. The reason why they put it there is probably because of its red bean paste inside. The way to make it is very similar to making a mooncake, just different paste and different mold. The key to a traditional (Cantonese) mooncake is exactly the mixture of the sweetness from the lotus seed paste and the saltiness from the salted egg yolk, just like salted camarel ice cream! The paste is indeed quite nutty, a little bit like mochi I guess. If you don't like this mixture, you can just have the lotus seed paste first and then have the salted egg yolk later. Don't bite the salted egg yolk right away, let it stay in your mouth for a while and taste its saltiness, it is pretty interesting and delicious to me. The reason why I point out that the mooncake is traditionally Cantonese is that people in other parts of China have different types of mooncakes. For instance, Shanghainese mooncake is full of grind pork, for details, check out 'Shanghai Savory Mooncakes'. Anyways, Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Hi Joe, your first conversation with chinese is perfect! And so glad to see that you tried those mooncakes! I like mooncakes with meat. My German husband only liked 五仁月饼(with five nuts...)。Many people around me could not bear 五仁月饼 at all. They think it tastes disgusting😂. However, for me,the mid-autumn fest is all about family. The most mportant point,we are together, and we are healthy. No matter there're Mooncakes Or not. I wish you a happy Moonfest with family!
U missing out the 冰皮(snowskin)moon cake which you can get from the fridge in any chinese market. Those would probably be more of your appetites.

Hi Joe. The Mid-Autumn Festival or Mooncake Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, so the actual date varies every year. There are legends and myths behind the festival but now it's all about family reunions. Families will gather to eat mooncakes, drink Chinese tea and enjoy the full moon. Of course these traditions will vary in every Chinese region. Eg. In Taiwan, the mooncakes are different and they normally have BBQ gatherings. In China, even though they have baked mooncakes but they don't taste as good as where I am from. I come from Singapore and I dare say our mooncakes are one of the best because it's quite a big deal here. I always prefer the traditional baked lotus paste with egg yolks. It's the lotus paste that tells whether a mooncake is good or not. As the lotus paste tends to be sweet, the egg yolks help to balance the sweetness... and you drink Chinese tea to wash away the oily aftertaste. Also during this festival, kids will carry lanterns and they have become part of the decorations in shopping malls and places of interest. Do come to Singapore... you will find different cultures and races coexisting here. 😊

From what I know, the mixed nuts mooncake suits British appetize better. I personally like the mixed nuts one with some tea. But they are very filling, I only eat them when I don't feel like having a dinner😂

The mixed nuts mooncake is actually a very traditional filling, usually with Chinese ham. It's one of the favourites of the Teochew people.

The green one isn't traditional ones unfortunately LOL, mooncakes are made with salted duck egg, the duck eggs represents message for the revolution against Ming dynasty Mooncakes were distributed on the Fifteenth day of 8th month in the Chinese calendar. There was a message inside to kill the rulers. Now its replaced with a Salted duck egg yolk.

Your favorite one is kind of like some high-end products in recent years. It tastes really good expect for that it is expensive. Just want to let you know that there could be hundreds of flavors of moon cakes. You can pick those you like but try to avoid some dark flavors like the Mocha one.

Have it with tea or coffee…. They’re lovely… granted I’ve only tried the lotus seed paste ones as they’re more common? I think? The stodgyness doesn’t it remind you of fudge? Or a thick sweet thing? Try it with tea or coffee… that’s how I like it! I mean milk tea…. Bloody hell mooncakes are expensive! In the uk

There are different moon cakes for the same Mid Autumn Festival all over China. They are sweet, salty, nutty, pork, and fresh flowers. They have all kinds of tastes, because China is too big. The Mid Autumn Festival is a festival representing family reunion. The whole family drinks tea and eats moon cakes in the evening to enjoy the moon.
